  • Planning to Buy Yamaha SZ R

    Dear Friends,

I am from Dadar, Mumbai & daily used to go thru this wonderful site and posting my first query here...

I am planning to sell my 2002 TVS Victor and going for a 150 CC bike.

I have zeroed on the Yamaha SZ R. Is it a good bike.

I need a bike with decent style, good riding position, good pillion comfort seat(Mother and wife should be easily be able to sit) and decent average and good Braking.

This is going to be my 1st 150 cc bike. I am 5 Feet 8 Inch and weigh 70 Kgs.Most travelling is within city. Budget: Rs.70,000/-

    Pls suggest on the above...

You have decided on a good bike already. Why worry? Go take a test ride. If you are happy then book it.

              go for it!

I think if you want a relative comparison of the fuel efficiency, you should look for the ARAI or SIAM tests. That will give you a better idea of the relative energy efficiency of your riding machine.

Fuel efficiency depends on various factors not just on whether you drive rashly or sedately. It depends on your weight, whether you carry a pillion, the traffic conditions, whether you drive on flat roads or incline/decline, the altitude at which you drive, the road conditions, wind resistance and so on...

From one of the other motoring websites, i got the ARAI/SIAM stats. as follows:
              SZ-R: 62.4 kmpl
              Hunk: 65.1
              Unicorn: 71.2
              Dazzler: 62.2
              FZ-S: 50.81

SZ-R would be a great city bike, if i just look at the spec. sheet. It gives its maximum torque at just 4500rpm !! How many indian "city" bikes do that?

So what does that translate to? Earlier pickup, less frequent gear shifts.

Also the weight of the bike is just 130 something kilos. So if i compare the torque to weight ratio, its better than a lot of the other bikes.

My suggestion: it looks like a great bike from the spec. sheet and also the reviews say that it handles better than the FZ and it hardly vibrates. So take a test ride to see if you feel comfortable in it and then go for it.

                Mileage may be an issue

                FZ-S: 50.81
The above figures do not hold good for real life city riding condition. I have an unicorn it returns 55 kmpl. All I want to say is the bike is good if the mileage is within your comfort zone. But as mentioned by pradeepa it will give you good relative mileage comparo if you have real life figures of few models.

The better way to look for rather than zeroing on a 150cc as such would be to look for power and torque figures of different models within your budget and mileage comfort level. Then short list them for looks and riding style and I guess you will find your bike.

If you have brand preference then search would be simple.

                  reg. the ARAI stats.

yes, the SIAM/ARAI stats. are collected in simulated lab. environments. But the tests are done for all machines under the *same* conditions.

You will never ever get those figures in your real life. Those numbers are only for relative comparison, so you have an idea about how energy efficient the bike is.

Give unicorn a test ride too, i guarantee u'll love riding it, with its monoshocks u'll get good pillion comfort as well as handling. Yamaha is known to give bad fuel efficiency for example fz which gives anywhere between 20-35 kmpl for most owners.

good choice bro.. I am a proud owner of Yamaha FZ16 since 2 years & I must say the build quality of these machines by yamaha is top notch & backed up by efficient after sales services.. My close pal wanted to get a bike for himself after going for 2-3 long trips as a pillion with me & my suggestion to him was obviously SZ-R since mileage was a bit of an issue for him + its his first bike with bare minimum riding experience on a HH passion. SZ-R stands good in most departments which count.
Wil get the bike delivered day after tomorrow.. Cheers
