  • The Right Bike

    Hi Everyone,

Hope everybody is enjoying their rides. I am looking to upgrade my bike (Discover 125 to ???). Requirements are as follows

    - Good power (>200CC)
    - Nice comfort for regular rides (everyday I need to ride for 30+ KMs to reach office, so ~70KMs/day)

    - Good grip on road
    - Nice control in traffic (I live in Hyderabad and the traffic sucks)
    - Nice ride in a bit bumpy roads
    - Should be nice for long drives too.

I am looking at Bajaj Avenger 220 DTSi at this time. Most of the above requirements are meeting but, I still give my -ves in form of tubed tires, spike wheels, bad experiences in U-turns, Bad control on wet roads.

    Please share your expertize.

And By the way.. has anyone from xbhp tried third party ABS like below. Please comment on that as well if your time permits.

    Saferide ABS

    Thank you all.

I was in the same dilemma and covering almost the same distance. However, looking at the Usage and rising cost of petrol. I've given up and using the same bike. However, in the lookout for a second bike (ZMA/P220) for touring.
Forget the Avenger in Hyd. traffic. Check out the Apache ABS, ZMA or P220, if mileage is not a concern.

Same thing as Guruji above. If possible use 2 bikes.

I am also using Discover 125 only. But I ve booked a TBTS. Waiting period is 5 months here.

It should return almost the same mileage as the Avenger. TD it and book if you like.

          Agreed with everybody
Even I have 2 bikes with me
Hunk for normal city riding and going to college and CBR for special occasions
I feel like Peter Parker when I drive my Hunk in the city but I become Spiderman when I am on my CBR swinging from one lane to the other on expressways.

2011 & Present: Honda CBR 250R [Black Blade]

            +10

Further you can have a look at P180 . Decent power and ok sort average if ridden sanely. Even A180 returns >40km/ltr under sane use and fun when ripped.

If mileage is a concern go for a 150cc...you have lot of options like Hunk, Xtrme, GS150, Yamaha SZR, Dazzler, A160.

Still better keep your Dicover, and get a powerful bike for weekend fun.

                  All,

Thanks for all your suggestions. I am not a bit comfortable riding P220/Apache models. (I tested my friends' bikes). I don't wanna go for 150/180/200. Hence, may be I need to wait for few more months.

By the way, is there any word in the market like, the Avenger 220 comes up with tubeless tires and rear disk brake? It seems my mind just got stuck up with Avenger.

If you're so inclined towards Avenger, go for it. At the end of the day, its our personal satisfaction that counts.
From the points you've mentioned, the Karizma will be the best choice according to me...and actually I'm using the same for my daily 80kms ride in Calcutta and ocassional(infact, frequent) long trips, since last 10 months(I've done almost 18000kms in this period).

80 Kms per day why don't you purchase a small car?

With Petrol at 75 Rs, a small car would need around 300 Rs per day only for fuel expenses, i.e. more than 6k p.m. which can get a good bike by end of the year.

If it is about expenses even a ZMA would need atleast petrol valued 3k.

I do not belong to a rich family can't afford/demand a car from my parents, as I'm a student The bike is altogether a different story Also, it takes me 45-50 minutes to cover those 33kms to my college on my bike but a "small car" would definitely take more than 1hr and 15 minutes or even more(We never know about traffic jams, specially in Calcutta).
Also, I can cut half the distance daily but just because I don't like Calcutta's traffic and crowd and unnecessarily blocked road,
nonsense drivers, I take the highway route daily which is exactly double in distance but gives me peace of mind. But now as the expenses are getting too high in fuel and that highway is not so pleasure to ride on, I'm thinking of riding through city that means around 40kms daily And that means Rs1000-1200
saved at the end of the month.

That holds good only if my daily travelling expense is Zero! Assuming fuel expenses to be Rs 3k / month, the saving may be = Rs (6k - 3k) = Rs 3k /month as compared to a car.

Yes, that figure roughly gives my expenditure over fuel per month.(infact, more than that, I doubt)
The fact is, I do roughly calculate as Rs2/km so 80kms = Rs 160...assuming the mileage equal to half the value of cost of fuel per litre.

A new ZMA is definitely cheaper than a decent "used" car. That needs to be added too.
