  • First bike within 2 lacs

    Hi guys,
First of all I want to thank in advance every single person that answers my query - Thank you all for your insight .

    So here's the question,

I am planning my first motorcyle purchase and have been doing so for almost a year - My interest in biking started with the launch of the R15. Before that I was never interested in biking as nothing available here was even worth bothering IMHO.

    My budget is 2 lacs.

1 > I rarely have time for anything - so I want a bike that will have the best after sales service so that I don't have to spend too much time on maintenance (Top priority is low maintainance) .

2 > I am looking for a commuter that eventually i will use for touring especially in the hills - example - Darjeeling, My goal is a tour of India on the golden quadilateral and Goa on the way. So I need a good tourer.

3> I don't care much for mileage , my concerns are rider comfort and drivability.

    Thanks again guys,
    Take care.
    Safety first.

Answers to your queries as best as I can

        1. CBR 250R is the bike. Low maintenance and low cost of ownership as well. Parts are cheaper than you'd think.

        2. Again. CBR 250R. Excellent commuter and worth its salt on the highways too.

        3. CBR 250R gives around 30kmpl even when constantly ridden at 120 kmph which should be good enough for most people.

Since your budget is 2L, you can get the ABS rather you should get the ABS.

You cannot marry & say you've seldom time to spend with your wife; and if one does that, the consequences are well known

Point - You cannot expect this in realtime!!!

Anyway, the closest that you can expect on this is to take any vehicle from BAL or HH.

But...you can do a GQ run with an Rx as well as R1 I see both as two different needs; if I were you, I'd buy two different bikes for two different purpose.

R15, I don't know how much comfort it can offer as there're so many people who love the comfort of R15 & hate it. Since your budget is 2L with two different purpose, I'd suggest you buying ZMA/R + another commuter that will serve both the purpose instead of buying one assuming one size fits all.

If I may dare to suggest, I'd suggest the Bajaj Avenger 220. BAL has one of the better sevice quality/availability of spares and the Avenger can also serve as an effortless tourer. But you can't expect, rather I'd suggest don't expect, one bike to fulfill all your needs.

I'd have recommended the RE Classic 500 had maintenance not been much of a concern.

For that matter any bike from RE, Honda, Yamaha, even LML can suit these needs. This is like going to a hotel & saying, "I've Rs 100 & give me something to eat". How does the bearer knows what you like & don't

And if you look at the suggestions here, all C250R owners will suggest C250R, N250R owners will suggest N250R & the same for R15 and confuse the OP even further. Finally he will decide that things are getting more confused & then finally land up buying something totally out of suggestions or something that confuses him less or may be with what majority of people suggest or worst thing...the suggestion from someone he likes & will be forced to like what he buys!!!

People suggest C250R, but, we don't know what kind of rider is the OP; assume he cracks the fairing or RVM's, think about the indefinite wait for the parts. Again N250R, buying is one time affair, maintenance...one has to start thinking of getting alternative parts if they can't afford for the OE parts.

To me the requirements are not clear as only an outline of the story is told, there're many things apart from maintenance, GQ ride (which is something you do only once in a lifetime & not everyday & one buys a bike to do GQ specifically )

                    @OP: ...get a P220 & be happy.
Parts are almost always available & you dont have to worry too much about the after sales support. If you are not happy with once ASC center, then u can find another within every 5kms..:P

                      Cbr250r

As very rightly put by many others - I too would like to avoid RE due to high maintainance issues.

Hondas are usually well built ,high quality and very reliable - so the CBR250R is a good contender.

Bajaj is also bringing out the KTM as well as refreshed pulsar models. Hopefully they will have a fully faired supersport 250 or a long stroke avenger 250. I really like bajaj due to the fact they use mostly indeginious parts - which translates into availability but might take another year for all that.

As far as HM is concerned , I would really like to wait and watch the newer models they bring out - I hope for exciting things from them - there is nothing in their existing lineup though, that I would even want to think about.

I am seriously hoping that Yamaha and suzuki enters the 250 supersport class - then we will really be spoilt for choice !!

But for now the only really good choice I have left is the CBR250R , considering that I would never buy anything second hand - even if it's a ninja...

SO here's my major question - the CBR250R - ABS vs Non ABS.
                      I have 2 concerns :

1 > I read somewhere that ABS is good for hard breaking in a straight line BUT when it comes to turns the pressing the rear break also applies breaking on the front - In a normal bike it is not recommended to use the front brake during turns as it can cause the bike to skid. Does it apply to the CBR ?

Can someone shed some light on this please ?

2> I read in many reviews that the front of the CBR250R has a diving problem - does that affect drivability or balance ? I am concerned because I am absolouteley new to biking.

Thanks again all for answering my questions.

Thanks again all for answering my questions.

ABS basically distribute the braking force when applied, thus reducing the chance of skid or highside/lowside on immediate (or better to say sudden) application of brakes.

However, CBR has a C-ABS, which combines both the brakes at once whenever either brake (front/rear) is applied. It does a great job while cornering. C-ABS makes sure that bike does not lose grip even in hard braking or leaning at a corner. So you can be sure about that stuff.

My personal suggestion would be to use engine braking if you really want to do a proper leaning at a corner in high speeds. Before trying it, give yourself sometime to getting used to it as you've mentioned that you're new to biking.

I'm afraid that I can't say anything about the diving issue as I don't have a CBR, only took a test ride for 500 mts few months back. I own an R15...

May be some CBR owner can show you the right way.......

One does not apply brakes when cornering, unless they intent to crash.
