  • Used Bajaj Pulsar 220

    hi,
i'm a new member to xBhp but has been reading the forum for a very long time. i finally joined the forum as i'm planning to buy my first motorcycle & need your advice on it. i've got an offer to buy a 2009 Pulsar 220F DTSi for Rs37k. i know the price is kinda low but the reason the seller is saying for this price is that the bike is being used by a stunt team. he said that the engine is fine, but the body needs some work. i've not seen the bike yet. seller is busy now & has told that he would be free next week. hope to meet the p220 then. dont know abt odo.

    my questions:
    1. what are the general problems that occur to stunt bikes?
    2. is it a good deal even if i have to do normal servicing?

i don't care about mileage or looks. would be using the bike for max 1.5years.

    please advice.
It does feel great to have a tank of petrol between your legs & explosions just under it.

welcome brother in the family of xbhpian's.moreover stunt bike engines are fried enough, they are used extremely to there end level.they are revived hard.many people like me always stay away from those type of bikes, then also get it inspected by a trusted mechanic.our xbhp gurus and pulsarians can explain you better.

Reduce the price a little more. Anyways, Bajaj parts are priced pretty low, so you can get them replaced for a decent budget. Shock absorbers should cost you around 1500 a pair and a similar amount for clutch plates. However, a good mechanic should be able to give you an estimate of the costs required for other parts that might need to be replaced.

Wait.. When he says body needs some work.. prepare an estimate on the work needs to be done. So the Estimation+37K is the price you got to pay.. Finally check is it worth paying that total amount.

Usually tanks are dented for stunt purpose..
            Clutch plates undergo excess usage.
            Fork,Alloy bends are possible.
Smoothness is out of question here..

On a 220 Fixing the engine piston is cheaper than body price.. sometimes back I had replaced headlight assembly, fairing & forks which totally costed me around 12K

My suggetion do not go for that bike..as this bike already juiced off.So ready for a budget of minimum 7-8 K only for the engine & others to make it worthy..so decision & money is yours.Hope u can understand the fact.

A used P220 is a juicy proposition but the only reason I do not recommend it is because it was a stunt bike. For a stunt bike, the price quoted is very high since replacements to make it as-good-as-new are very high.

As tempting as it may sound, it might as well turn out to be a nightmare. Such a bike would most definetly need work on the forks, chain sprocket, clutch assembly apart from the body work, tyres etc. A friend grabbed a similar "tempting" deal for 43k. He has since spent ~25k and counting. Not to forget the endless hours spent in the garage. Spares being "cheap" becomes irrelevant in most cases. Be very sure as to what all work it needs.

1200 for a new chain sprocket set
                    80 for a new air-filter
180 for a set of new spark plugs
assuming the plastics are not broken
If they are, 1800 for the fairing
                    Indicators are 150 apeice.
                    A Clip-on costs 120/-(240 for 2)
                    3500 for the headlamp assembly
                    rear plastic bits are 800odd
I dont think rims would be bent. They rarely get damaged with the roughest use.
Nothing happens to the rear suspension
front fork seals might need changing. An overhaul will set you back by a grand.
New Clutch plates + engine oil wil cost you 1200 inclusive of labour.
A new set of (both)tyres will probably cost 4500.
                    A New Crash guard : Rs. 290.
Any stunter worth his art would at least have usable disc pads. If not, another 250 for a set of disc-pads(price for both)
                    So worst case:
The total bill should be 15k. Get these spares from the ASC and get it fixed outside. It will save you quite a fortune.

But in the above case, NOTHING in the bike was in working order. The only intact things were the chasis, engine(where something would rarely go wrong), fuel tank, battery and the switchgear.

If the bike is around ~30k, It will need an additional timing chain replacement (don't remember those charges) but that wasn't much (700odd).

Anyways, if the bike needs 15k worth of parts replacement, it can be negotiated for a much lower price than 37k(maybe 27-30 is more like it).

A new exhaust however is 8k and adds quite a bit to the parts replacement bill. Since you are armed with much more information now. I guess you can negotiate accordingly.

P.S.: The bike is so bloody simple that there is little to go wrong. Seriously if I ever happen to need another one and find a non stunt P220, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

A stunter would only sell his bike for 3 main reasons.

                      1) Given up on stunting
                      2) Bike has no more juice left.
                      3) Has found a other bike which out shines his current.

In your senario number 2 option has a very high chance. My advice, drop it. You don't need that headache.

Avoid. You'll rarely find a bike more abused than a stunt bike.
