  • FZ1 or Ducati 796

Hi, i had a Karizma from 2007-10. Then bought an RE classic 500 in 2010 and still own it. Now i am planning to upgrade to a litre class. Yes i know i can graduate from 600 to litre but i think i am ready for the litre . I would be using this only for weekend trips and monthly long trips (500-1000km).
After looking around at all available bikes i kind of short listed on 2 of them. The Yammy FZ1 and Ducati 796. Both are my price range
I checked out the FZ at one of the showrooms in bangalore and plan to visit Ducati this week. I am 6'3" so if the bike is small it doesnt work for me.
The FZ gives me the biggest "bang for my buck" at 150PS but Ducati is also an amazing bike and i guess a little cheaper too as well as i guess more manageable at 800 CC.
Thats the reason i am kinda confused. so guys can you please help me?

How much are FZ1/795/796 are costing in bangalore.

I believe 795 will cost half of fz1 .... why not go in for that for the most VFM deal

I would say its going to be personal preference. 796 is VTwin and FZ1 is I4. VTwins needs bigger engine to generate same power and pretty boring and flat if the engine is small. once again it depends how often you wish to see the top end as that's where they "usually" lack while they do offer the good torque in lower rev ranges.
You need to get adjusted to different engine braking(more than I4) too if you have never ridden a VTwin before. Can they offer you test ride if you put a deposit or something to help you decide better and see/feel these things if never felt before? Perhaps consider the cost of service/parts/maintenance schedule as well to see the overall picture....
I would pick FZ1 if it was for me..

i would rather choose a ducati,795 will save you lots of money.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

Against the 795,the FZ is an automatic choice.795 is under powered and as a DUC might be heavier on the pocket too(After Sales).
FZ should be compared to the StreetFighter not Monster

Anyway the FZ1 is a sweet liter class for the streets!absolute fun bike!Id recommend the 795 ONLY IF you really want to save money.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys.

How much are FZ1/795/796 are costing in bangalore.
The price of FZ1 on road is 10.5L and the Duc 796 may be 1L lesser. (need to confirm from showroom on weekend)

FZ should be compared to the StreetFighter not Monster
i agree that FZ1's competition for power is streetfighter but i dont think its still available here, atleast not on ducati india site)

Some things i have considered apart from what i mentioned. Some pros and cons of both. so here goes:
                FZ1
                Pros:
                - is the actual liter class (missed it in my earlier post)
                - i have tried sitting on and checking the bike (but coudnt get to ride it) and the size is good for my height
                - is Jap so resale would be good and overall maint would be lower
                - have checked the maint cost and a regular service with Oil (synthetic) would come to around 5K
                - has the highest specs of power and torque in its class and price

                Cons:
                - is actually not practical to ride in city of bangalore anytime
                - at 214kg and very large turning radius, gives very limited maneuverability on small streets ( i cant be always only on highways rite?)
                - its almost impossible to utilize even 50% of its power on indian roads

                Ducati (796/5)
                Pros:
                - Price: definitely costs less. you dont pay for the extra power you are never going to use.
                - at 800 cc and 85BHP has enough power to go around even on highways
                - hydraulic clutch
                - has better looks
                - due to narrower tyres and about 15-20 kgs less should be more maneuverable on small streets

                Cons:
                - Is actually of the exotic category (like a ferrari), so parts and maintenance may be more expensive and difficult in case there are problems with a dealership which is still new and had problems in past.
                - If i buy 796 i pay extra money just for cosmetic changes (engine is exactly same, swing-arm, etc) so then 795 becomes the choice

So now you know why i am confused
But i am inclined towards the FZ simply because this is going to be weekend bike and, what the hell, even if you aint gonna use it the thrill of opening a throttle on 150PS cant be beaten

Will keep you posted on the decision.

Guys as i mentioned earlier i am also inclined to the FZ so i guess that should be the one. But i would still go and look at the Duc this weekend, after all i am spending all my savings on these things

Aren't these bikes being discussed all CBUs?

Won't the post budget pricing of everything rise quite heftily since GOI has raised Basic Customs duty from 60% to 75% so overall duty was increased from 120% to 135%.

If the Ducatis are being assembled in India, they woud escape this Customs Duty hike. But FZ1 Surely is looking at a roughly 7% increase in Ex Showroom price so OTR would be more like 11.2-11.3 lac.

Do correct me if I am missing something.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

the duty increase is only for imported vehicles costing $40,000 and more. so its not going to affect CBU bikes
