  • Bike for an amature

Hi all, just joined this fantastic forum!
I've been riding Activa for the last 7 yrs and have never ridden a bike. Activa's starting to show its age, so I plan to replace it with a comfortable bike.
    *Age - 21 (College-goer)
*Daily commute - 30 kms in moderate traffic
*Bike should have comfortable seat and riding position
    *Mileage - ~30kmpl
    *Budget - 150k INR
    *Striking looks
    *Preference - Yamaha or Honda

I loved KTM, but my friend who owns the Duke advised against it citing engine overheating, coolant/oil leakage, unreliable, etc

I've got my eyes on CBR150R. Should I go ahead with it? Will there be any future launches from Yamaha's stable?

After losing two of my closed ones in a fateful bike accident, all my well-wishers advise me not to buy a bike as they feel its more prone to accidents. Is riding a bike really dangerous?

I'm in a complete dilemma, kindly answer all my queries!

First of all Regarding your fears about motorcycling being a dangerous activity, I would recommend you to go through this:

      The Art of Safe Riding

Secondly coming to the bike, Coolant leaks can happen on any car or bike (Yamaha or Mercedes) if you 'OVERFILL' the coolant. I don't think coolant on the Duke leaks AFTER it reaches the level it should be. Also, I am really curious to know what sort of unreliability has your friend faced with his Duke, because all of the owners here on xBHP seem to be satisfied.

Why am I defending the Duke? Because as an urban commuter, the Duke is head and shoulders better than anything else currently on sale in your budget. In fact, better than anything else for sale @< Rs.1.7 lac. It is really not a competitor to the identically priced CBR150R, rather it is closer to the 250 in terms of absolute performance.

But if you have touring / cornering on your mind, you might want to look more closely at the competition.

Thanks for replying antz! It'll be used for riding in city only, I've got a car for highway runs. He's the only guy who's got the duke in my college, I think he's giving all these moronic reasons to keep me from buying it. But the engine does tend to get super hot.. Should I go ahead with the duke or do I have other options for urban commuting?

All bike engines get hotter than normal when the bike is running in. Everything settles down after 1st oil change @1st service.

Will it serve me well for at least 7 yrs? I don't mind extending my budget if I have to. Kindly advice.

Depends on how you keep it . The bigger question is, will you keep it for 7 years?

KTM's are known for their reliability and quality. It's just that so far we are not exposed to KTM's. They are more into off road bikes.

Duke..... yup, its the best within your budget.... and best city handler.....
you can turn on 4th gear wthout knocking only in duke

                  or

you can extend your budget a little bit go for CBR250r... but it may be heavy for city rides

                  or

take yammas v2.0.... a very good handler.... but less than duke in cities.... better in highways

From Yamaha stable you have to wait another year for the 250's. Best bid is a KTM 200 excellent build quality and finish. It is a best city handler.
                    Yamaha RX100 (1993)
                    Yamaha RX135 (2000)
                    Bajaj Pulsar 150 (2004)
                    Yamaha FZ-25 (2017)
                    TVS N-Torq (2018)

Engine overheating happens to any car or bike. If you are caught in a mile long traffic jam and moving only in first gear-any engine in this world will over heat. You can hear this thing yourself if you are caught in jams-loud humming sound coming from engines.
About coolant leakage-i did it myself on my Duke by over filling it even after reading the manual.
Unreliable-a single piece among a huge lot can be a possible but not all the lot. And well KTM is a reputed company.
If you budget allows you-then i say go for the Duke.

I plan to. My Activa's 7 yrs old and my Matiz turns 11 this November

v2.0's riding position is a bit on the aggressive side. I want a bike only for riding in the city.

I like CBR250R but I heard its hard to ride in traffic..

250 from Yamaha? I don't mind waiting for another 10 months if I have to. Will it be a street bike? Please share more info about the same. I have a soft corner for Yamaha and Honda.

CBR 250R if you can handle it otherwise for city streets Duke 200 would be the best.

KTM Duke is a better Performer than CBR 250 and upcoming Pulsar 220NS according to XBHP reviews.

Yes they have started analyzing the 250cc market and they are manufacturing the bike locally to price it aggressively. But don't know whether it is a street bike or a full fairing one like R15. This year they are busy with the release of the scooter ray
Mostly the bike will be a street version because for a full fairing they have to rework completely. If it is a street version they can easily swap the FZ engine with 250
