  • Alternatives to KTM Duke 200

    Hi guys,

Short time member.. big time fan here..

This query is for my brother who is about to buy a bike. He is interested in getting the Yam R15 V 2.0. I am however not too keen on it.

Riding is usually in the city with occasional weekend tours.

Please don't include KTM Duke 200 to the list because I own it and we (I) don't want another KTM in the lot.

His current ride is the Apache RTR160.
    Height 5'6"
    weight 65 kilos

Also exclude the Yam FZ (Already own one)

How much is the CBR250? (Not interested in150)

    Thanks for all your help.

    Happy riding.
Live to ride.. ride to forget..

What about 200NS? That way you get both the mistress and the wife in the garage .

Edit: The CBR250R is priced in Bangalore as follows:

    CBR 250R STD : Rs.174741
    CBR 250R ABS : Rs.204571
    CBR 250R STD TRICOLOR : Rs.175923
    CBR 250R ABS TRICOLOR : Rs.205753

All prices OTR Bangalore, On road price does not include optional items like - Accessories, Extended warranty, AMC etc.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Looking at the title, I thought it's about Duke 200 vs competition
P200NS fits the bill, I guess. CBR250 is a good choice, but for a city ride, I would prefer a naked bike to one with fairing.

The Pulsar 200NS is still not launched in Bangalore, even the test bikes are not here. I would definitely consider it. However, my brother seems to have an aversion to all things Pulsar.
        Is it worth waiting for?

R15 is all about choice !! It's like addiction. I can bet even R15 would had top end of 100kmph then too people would have bought it, just for looks!! Rest it has gem technology!! excellent handling and braking. I still favour R15 over Duke or NS handling and braking stuff(my personal view!!

Riding R15 for more than 2 yrs now. Very happy and don't like to change for Duke or NS(no offence friends).Booked one CL too !!

Why don't you think for RE electra in your stable ?? Already you have a Duke!! it will be a change! for both of you!!

CBR with ABS only INMO but it won't be flickable like Duke!! only power/speed and touring!! for city CBR ?? Still i doubt ?? It's a bike !! with big price!!

I was inclined on the CBR as I could just had him the Duke and take the CBR if and when I wanted to go on a long ride.

How good is the R15 for touring? I know lots of people have covered a lot of ground on it. My concern is the riding position as the total range. Can you give me some idea on both?

The RE is off limits as both my brother and I are of medium build and not really fond of the long stroke bikes. Haven't ridden one as yet.. Maybe its time I got on the saddle.

R15 is real fun on highways!! riding R15 for long tours totally depends on your build, I get back pains after 300kms continous ride, But my friends ride it for 400kms+.

Fact is R15 is a sports bike and for tour you have take haults in every 200kms as the posture won't permit you to ride more than that in one stretch!! But R15 power is best on highways only, braking and handling are also seen in that place only!!

Check for RE you won't regret!! what built has to do with RE??
but for city traffic R15 makes you cry literally! As i said it's an addiction so people go through anything for it!

I would suggest R15 any day.. i have been touring on it.. no problems at all. .i recently covered 1200kms.. Not even a single problem.. you get used to the riding posture gradually..

Great!! Could you tell me what was the approx range you got on a full tank?

Was there any heating problems and how did it perform on less than good roads?

When you are on R15 then your pcoket should be ready to feed her!!
R15 gives decent average of 40-45kmpl in range of 40-60kmph i ride daily 40kms, city +highways(20-80%) i get 40-42kmpl daily i fill 5 liters per week for my 5 days travle +2 liters for rippping sessions....

But bad and ugly average it can give is 35kmpl, i never got anything below this when riding at 12kmphs too on tours!!

Heating: Nope till now in 2 yrs i never saw R15 heating insanely ever!! went on many long tours and i still see her in same phase!! few airs can be felt when gone over 200kms, but nothing insane!!

In my opinion, go for the CBR250r, R15 or one from the RE stables, own both CBR and RE and can vouch for them. Secondly, you already have a couple of city bikes, buy something with which you have the option of highway cruising or sport biking. Everyone loves a little bit of diversity in their steeds.

                      Cheers fellas.

Why not any RE bikes, looks like you have street fighters and commuters already in your garage so you could think seriously about a RE CL5 or DS or if budget allows a HD superlow .
Its crime to ride a car alone, so I ride bike :).

Without a doubt! even ardent haters of Pulsar/Bajaj are bowled over by P200NS! why not give it a chance. From some of the senior member's test ride impressions, it appears that P200NS is more refined than a CBR150/250 and handling/ride is also right up there on top. And the way it's priced, very hard to ignore it. But yeah, if you have budget for CBR250, go for it. It's a good bike, even now, there is no direct competition/alternative to CBR250 at that price point.

Filling fuel is not an issue. My question was because I want a vehicle in which I can cruise for atleast 350-400 kms without having to stop for fuel on the highway where fuel quality is more often than not questionable. 40kmpl would easily crack my target so that's good. Thanks.

Exactly. I'm still worried about picking up a RE as I prefer bike without any major hassles. I've been hearing good things about the new gen of engines. SO will take a test ride and then decide.

Guess I should have a look at the Pulsar once it arrives in the showrooms before signing on the dotted line.

My brother was almost about to book a R15 yesterday evening. I've held him off for a bit to see what becomes of the Pulsar and CBR250. Have not been hearing good things about the Honda service though

Had I been you, I would have taken CBR250r or seriously considered the Desert Storm. You have the best street fighter with you right now, the Duke 200. I will not go for P200 as both share a lot of similar features.

CBR250R or the DS will give you an excellent touring option with good riding posture and decent power. R15, though I like it's looks I personally won advice you that if you can afford a CBR because you can get better power and a better tourer.

As Antz.bin said a duke and CBR in a garage is like having the wifey and mistress together

Sometimes it takes a whole tankful of fuel before you can think straight.

It was not that far on the map.
