  • Help needed for choosing first bike

    Hi guys,
I want to buy a bike costing around 60k. It would be driven by my dad also. My parents told me to go for a bike which is good looking, fuel efficient, and less costly.

I really liked the YAMAHA SZ-R. It is an economical bike, good looking and 150cc(perfect for my dad).

These are the things which I would like to know :-

    1. I have seen in some website that mileage of sz-r drops after 3rd service. What is its average FE. Will the mileage really drop after some time..??
SZ-R owners please give your suggestions.

2.What are the other Pros and Cons of SZ-R ?

    3. I would like to upgrade its stock rear tyre as my friends told that it the bike lacks behind in braking. I was planning for buying Michellin tyres. What are the other options.Kindly give your suggestions.

    4. Which are the other bikes in this prize tag that would satisfy my needs. What are your suggestions about pulsar 135 ? Is it suitable for me as i am 5'4 in height. What is its Pros and Cons. Also can u tell me its proper FE that I would get for city driving( I would be driving 30kms per day).

I am not planing for Honda Unicorn and Suzuki GS150R and HH hunk because -
*Unicorn - I was interested in dazzler. But it is costly.
*GS150R- Its too high for me. I am only 5'4 in height.
*HH Hunk - It looks very big on me.

    What Bike Query Approved
First of all, welcome to xBHP.

All the bikes you have rejected in that post of yours cost upwards of 75k (At least here in Pune). Are you sure your budget is actually 60k?

If you are actually serious about that budget of yours, I suggest that you might want to take a look at the 125cc bike market. The following chart should help. Since I personally consider front disc brakes as a necessity(from a safety point of view) on any bike which will be used in an Urban Area, all bikes in the chart have one (unless specifically mentioned otherwise).

    Happy Shopping.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

I'll leave questions on SZ-R to owners, may be you can post them in SZ-R ownership thread to get quick answer.

Regarding P135LS, in city conditions (in Bangalore) I was getting 55kmpl+ consistently. P135LS saddle height is slightly more than P150, if you are 5'4", you will need to stretch slightly. But, seat is not too wide, so you shouldn't have much difficulty in managing it, besides it's very light @ 122kg compared to competition. Did you consider Discover 150?

No,I didn't consider Discover 150 because I didn't like its design. Anyways will be buying either SZ-R or P135.

If both design and mileage are considerations, then I guess Pulsar 135LS is better on both counts. Not to mention is as fast as most mainstream 150cc bikes.

The SZ is really a detuned 150cc bike, it makes almost 15% less power than the bike it borrows its engine from (Yamaha FZ). The FE is nothing to write home about for such a low horsepower bike. Going by the (premature) poll results on the SZ-R ownership thread, 77.77% (14 out of 18) owners get FE of 45kmpl or less. I mean, even my own Pulsar 220 returns better FE numbers than that if I can restrain myself between the 65-80kmph band (with 5-6 bursts to the 120s every 100 km) in the city.

My frank advice, for your budget, you will be better off choosing from Discover 125ST / Pulsar 135LS / Honda Stunner / Hero Ignitor / Hero Achiever / Yamaha 125SS (Gladiator). IMO, almost all of them even look better than the SZ (No offends to any SZ owners).

I agree with that part. It is only selling because it looks (ok atleast the previous generation Blue colored SZ-R looked) better, much better than its contemporaries do and has a huge tank that (for people who fill up full tank almost always) creates an illusion of high mileage. Ideally you should expect such a low powered bike to return atleast 55-60 km/litre (considering SZ is spec wise very similar to the TVS/Suzuki Fiero).

Are the Stunner and Ignitor actually even worth considering ?
Currently without a vehicle. Uber App and Bangalore Metro serving all my travel needs.

                This one?

I don't know why I like this one more.. looks much fresher IMO.

Mine does, the last 3 FEs have been 46.5, 48.3, 48.1 kmpl. It has not returned anything below 45 for the last ~2k km. Everything inside city, under conditions you quoted. Under milder riding conditions, I have stretched it to 58kmpl, thrice (in ~3 years ).

Stunner and Ignitor are actually value for money if you don't consider non Honda competition. Stunner sells for Rs.17xx more than the Shine, for 1 more horse and much less 'uncleji' looks. If you change the front sprocket to that from the Stunner Fi, it transforms into a pretty decent bike (which doesn't vibe at 60).

Ignitor on the other hand looks fresher and it comes with more goodies than Stunner. Ignitor 'should' even return better FE than Stunner. If you want a 125cc which looks good and makes decent power (and have an aversion towards the Discovers), the bikes are actually good.

dude, both the ignitor and stunner have same engine and similar cycle parts with identical weight..so, both are equally good in fuel efficiency....
ignitor looks much fresher and even has digital meter like the hunk,,
however disc+self costs around 65(otr kolk)..so a bit over the mentioned budget...but with hero you can have better spare parts availability and service than honda....

in my opinion, test drive all the shortlisted bikes and decide accordingly.....

                    A Small Miracle Happened..!!

Yesterday my mom and dad went to see the SZ-R(actually to book it).
The showroom guy told it would be 63k. My mom didn't like it shape(No offense guys..). She told me it looked big & it will not suite me. So they came out from there and went to a TVS showroom to see if there is anything suitable for me.And guys she booked an RTR and came home. She told "Don't worry about the money.RTR suits you more.It is less high and dad also liked it."
And I was very very happy hearing it.

Will get my Ride on thursday..I can't wait to see it..!!!
Anyways thanks for all your suggestions and time...

93k is also a small problem because I actually had a 60k bike in my mind...But this came out to be a miracle. So if I stress my parents again, they might even cancel my current RTR...so why take risk..?? Its silly...but you know...

Anyways bro this is my first bike only so after 1 year only I'll start burning the road... Till then normal city driving only...
