  • First Bike Confusion!

I want a 150+cc bike and have short-listed the following bikes:

    pulsar 150,
    hero hunk,
    suzuki gs150r,
    tvs apache 160 series rtr
    yamaha fz-s

My requirements are good fuel efficiency, resale value, great quality, low maintainence cost, long life (I might have it for even a decade ) and consistent performance.

P.S: please don't respond like if you want quality go for this or if you want fuel efficiency go for that. I would be happy if you could give one/two word answer which is nothing but the name of any of the above mentioned bikes which quite matches my requirements.

    Please help.

Q1: Why are you interested in Resale if you are going to keep it for a decade? After 10 years it won't matter if the resale is good or bad, whatever the bike, you will only get peanuts (unless it is a classic ).

For the rest of it, Please stick to Suzuki GS150R.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

good mileage and re-sale then only one name Hero or Honda only !!!!

FZ is nice but i don't think you would be happy with 45-50kmpl for decades...
Apache don' have re-sale as far i know.
Suzuki still not in race for re-sale but GS150r is best in 150cc...you can surely think in those points!!

SZ-r/Dazzler/CBZ/P180 are some the good bikes..

      What is your budget ?

Forget the resale coz you wont feel like selling it. The GS150R is a great bike.
pulsar and apache overall maintenance is pain. Fz will never fulfill your mileage requirement. Finally its between hunk and gs, the gs outbids hunk in most of the quality and mileage aspect.
There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

Exactly, make sure you buy a bike which satisfies all your needs and wants,And is happy with your pocket size, then you'll never have to think about resale
Hunk is expected to have better resale since it is a Hero product, but in 5 years god knows what'll happen

              Bajaj Pulsar 150 (2004)

True. Except for lucky buggers who managed to buy RX-Z 5-Speed with Disc Brakes for 60k in 2002/2003 and kept it well and are selling it now for 70k in Bangalore, or luckier buggers who bought 1986/1987 Japanese RX100 for ~11k and are selling it for ~40k now, resale value is not worth considering for 10 year old bikes.

A 2002/2003 Pulsar 150 Classic that cost ~55k then would today go for ~24k to give you a comparo. Same era Pulsar 180 Classic would go for 3-4k more. And these were popular bikes.

While keeping for a decade, what is more important is:
                1. Build quality of the bike to last 10 years
                2. Spare parts and the like should be available for next 10 years
                3. Fuel efficiency should not drastically drop after 2-3 years
                4. You should have service centres near wherever you stay/relocate in next 10 years
                5. You should first find the bike nice enough to keep 10 years
Currently without a vehicle. Uber App and Bangalore Metro serving all my travel needs.

GS150R -- Just as you asked... wonder how a one word answer can suffice without knowing the reason behind it ...

                      @TS., He is right....

Then, probably the answer for you will be that you can't get all the requirements
in a single machine. You have two choices,
                      either to prioritize your needs
or let go of a need so that at-least the other gets fulfilled.

Decide it upon! All the best for your first bike!
The limiter kicks in @11,500 rpm just within a second after the first shift..And, that's where the fun begins !! ;)
