  • Economical Bike for a College Student

    Hi,

I am totally new in xBHP and this is my first post here.

I am looking for an economical motorcycle, in the 125cc category, for myself for commuting from home to my college.

The top most priority in the selection is going to be fuel efficiency, next comes safety, handling and comfort and at last (and the least) is looks and styling of the bike (Are there any more parameters to be considered?).

Please suggest me a suitable bike!

My daily ride is going to be in a total of 38 km in the city. I won't be using this bike on Highways at all (May be one roadtrip before graduating, I am in pre-final year now). I won't be going beyond 75kmph even on an arrow straight empty roads and will not be zip-zap-zooming much during traffic. I will be riding the bike at sane speeds all the time. I am from Bangalore and my route is going to be Vidyaranyapura-> Mathikere-> Malleshwaram Margosa Road-> Anand Rao Circle-> KR Circle. So you can imagine the low-moderate intensity of traffic I am talking about.

One would ask why I am going for a 125cc motorcycle and not a 100cc motorcycle, which offers the best economy. The reason is I am afraid that the build-quality of a 100cc motorcyele may not be so good as compared to a 125cc one, and I definitely want to spend my dad's hard earned money on a quality product.

Note that I am not new to biking. I learnt riding bike when I was in 8th standard and now I have the confidence of handling any sub-200cc Indian bike.

Also, I wanted to know how the exchange offers work. We have a 1991-model Bajaj Super scooter. We retired it 6 years ago and it's been just standing in the garage since then. Its engine is still in the "half-kick start" condition but the tyres must have gone bad now. Will it be possible to exchange this scooter to get discounts in the new bike?

Lastly, is it worth waiting till the festive season for discounts in price and new releases?

Advance thanks for all your replies and cheers to this kickass forum!

The above article should help. It features all but one (only Discover 125ST, the most VFM one) of all the 125s currently sold in the market.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

      Honda Dream Yuga.

Nothing else should be in your list.

Superb bike. Great comfort. Looks sexy to me. And really good mileage.

Whatever you heard about the durability of 110cc bikes is just bullshit. Splendors have lived more than a decade here without as little as hinge shaking.

You need to talk to Pinakiji regarding the reliability of a Splendor. He'll explain till the last decimal.

Okay, why Dream Yuga and not Splendor?
Splendors are awesome. Super duper light, super duper comfortable. But the Splendors I talk of were Honda engines. Now post split up, they are Hero modifications.
Dream Yuga are the next level of Honda's Splendor's engine.

The reliability, durability, comfort, price and mileage are bang on. And its Honda's engine. Super refinement.

Waste no time and just go for it.

P.S.: Had a '00 Splendor that kicked ass till the day it was sold in '11. Honda commuters = the best.

Edit: KR circle? Do you study in the...I think its UVCIT or Vishveshwarya Engg College opp. Cubbon Park entrance?

          @thorium,

since FE is first and looks matter least,

i would suggest glamour Fi/glamour to you,....it gives the best fuel economy of all 125 cc bikes......it is actually quite comfortable, has decent power and with disc brakes is comfortable too and being a HERO you dont need to spend a fortune to maintain the bike ....
          and
dont worry because all HERO vehicles come with same HONDA engines till 2014...

so ,as per your requirements glamour/glamour fi is perfect...

the only new bike to be launched in 125cc is TVS PHOENIX..

imo, all 100 cc bikes are pretty well built and are least expensive to maintain ,if u decide for a 100cc bike ,we can give you suggestions.

lastly, i personally appreciate your mature and sane driving and your grown up attitude, and
          welcome to XBHP,, so cheers...

Who says that 100cc bikes don't have good built quality?? and 125cc bikes have better?? i suggest you go with hero's

I would have suggested you Discover 125 ST, but as it's tube bike so i would like to refrain from that, becuase mostly people are going forward to Tubeless, self start and front disc atleast.

            Why not a Hero Ignitor??
            125cc engine,
            Tubeless tyre
            self start
adn cost approx 60-65k OTR+/- 2k for your area.

The benefit here is Hero's SVC is all wide spread.
It's the straight competitor of Stunner.
This bike will give you a better mileage with hero's SVC and a different looks as compare to normal biking.

P.S: Discover ST and Ignitor both are new in market.< but i have started seeing Ignitor on roads more as compare to Discover, personal view.

Looking at your username, I must ask you, will your ride be gasoline powered or nuclear powered?

There is plenty of options for you in the 125 cc category. However, I think 100 cc is your best bet. I think your fears on build quality are unfounded, since it was the 100 cc that revolutionized Indian motorcycling industry. And it remains the backbone of all successful brands today and in the days to come.

I'd encourage you to relook at your stand on this, since you will get superior mileage and life long reliability in this category. I will also go as far as saying that the quality is not much different between a 100 cc vs a 125 cc in a given brand. The final call on cc is yours, though.

Back to your question, If I were you, I'd stick to reputed brands. Honda shine, Suzuki slingshot and bajaj discover are all good models that meet your cc and other criteria.

First of all congratulations for deciding to go for a motorbike.

I would suggest a splendor to you first. It meets all your requirements except looks. Why I suggest this is as it is a rock solid bike. Guys have done 3 Lakh kms on it and counting. I myself did a lakh km on it.

But, I would ask you to go for Passion. It looks better and has the Strong DNA of splendor.

Why only these two bikes? - Actually all the aesthetic parts are widely available on after market shops at a far lesser price and the ownership becomes very very low maintenance.

                  hello Thorium-232, Welocme to xBhp

As everyone mentioned above; honda's good- build quality, hero's good (at least till 2014) and good service network, Bajaj's good - you've an option to choose from Disco 100 to new 125st, TVS- not bad (according to me) Gives good mileage and huge VFM bikes. Since you're a college going student i suggest you go for a 100 cc will be easy on your pocket.

Hi, currently Honda shine is the best city bike with best fuel efficiency and performance in 125cc segment. But now honda's newer 110cc engine doing duty on CB Twister and Dream yuga has given a boost to its performance very close to 125cc bike. So for city rides CB Twister has performance and pick same as 125cc bikes and has fuel efficiency of 100cc. Dream yuga is bit more comfortable while Twister has sporty ride.passion and splendor is now getting old and bit outdated....one more important thing is that Honda is presently working on next generation 125 cc engine that will come to india in various scooters and bikes after 2014 when hero and Honda will end their partnership. so if you want 125 cc then either go for Shine or check the new discover 125 ST...and if mileage is your main concern then either go foe Dream yuga or Twister....both are great city bikes.

Well overall if you see the Discover ST is very good VFM IMHO. The exhaust note is too good for a 125cc bike. Has a 4valve engine and monoshock too. And owners claim 60kmpl mileage. Other than that Stunner (looks+refinement) and P135LS (Power+Mileage) are other good options.
