  • Buying 2nd hand Thunderbird(things to look for,tips?)

I'm an RTR160 owner. Rode a cousin's Bullet STD a few months ago and have been craving for one ever since. Liked the torque a lot, and though I ride aggressively on my RTR, I like long medium-speed cruising quite a bit too. I've been trying to find a UCE Electra/Classic/TBTS at a suitable price, and finally found one in my home town today (in Kerala). It is a 2010 model Thunderbird with around 14k on the odo. I'll be meeting the owner and taking a look at the bike in a couple of days.

    1) I'll be using it in Bangalore, where I go to college. Riding will mostly be small city trips (<20 km) on weekdays, and the weekend long rides (100-200km). Is the TBTS (or for that matter any Bullet) even the right bike for me, my craving for it aside?

    2) Asking price is 80k, I reckon I might be able to shave off a few thousands more with bargaining, at best. Is it on par the market price? Worth it?

    3) Things to look for? I'll try to get a Bullet mechanic to evaluate the bike, but still, it wouldn't hurt to look for things myself.

    4) How much of an issue would maintenance be? I have an Enfield-only workshop just a few metres from my home, and the place is always filled with Bullets, so I reckon taking it for maintenance is easy.

Question is, how serious would the maintenance be for a bike of this age? I'll be riding this very smooth and un-aggressively, if that makes any difference. If it would require daily maintenance, I might have to rethink. And I don't mind getting my hands dirty and learning a bit of maintenance work, if that'd make it easier.

Being a Bullet, I'm not going to insult its reputation by asking about mileage, as I love riding and would not give up an RE just because of it :P

    5) Assuming I go through with buying, what are your favorite mods for the TBTS? I'm eyeing an aftermarket silencer, a side box and modified seats. What else?

    6) Any other tips all ya' seasoned Bull owners would like to give?

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
