  • Total Noob getting his first bike needs your advice!

    Hello all at xbhp ,

I was all over the internetz, researching With the intention of getting my first bike that I stumbled upon xbhp forums. After 3-4 days of reading i joined the forums and now i make my first post! I live in Sri Lanka and would love to take your advice on choosing my first ride!

What my needs are : (they are simple)

    I want a stylish bike
I will be traveling to office n back (around 50 kms a day)
I will be touring once a month or so and i would love to keep to the freedom of traveling by bike
fuel economy = yes am expecting a decent fuel efficiency
I'm 6ft in height and not looking at any race riding positions (need a bike with a nice height)

    what I'm looking at :

I'm focusing on the 150 segment and I have a few choices (but these are made purely by reading online reviews), after many comparisons yamaha sz-r is the one that my heart favors, I have checked with sri lankan yamaha dealer and they said the sz-r will be available in country on the december 2012. (sz & sz-x is available, but I wish to wait for the disc brake varient).

guys if you think what am choosing is wrong or have options please state them as it would be a big help to choose my bike.

thank you all at xbhp. safe riding

    Thread Approved

First of all, Welcome to xBHP.

Secondly, the Yamaha SZ is a fairly capable bike and its a very good bike to be used as a commuter. For a 150cc bike, in the interest of your own safety, you should always opt for the bike with at least a Front Disc Brake. In that regard, SZ-R is the obvious choice.

But since that bike won't be available for another 3 months, please let us know what other 150cc bikes are available in Sri Lanka so that we all can guide you better.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

      Hi antz.bin,

only a few are available to my liking here, I was looking at unicorn but it's way high priced, Bajaj is something i don't want to consider as an option, it's not because i don't like them, but it's all over the place and a common scene in Sri Lanka. I want to ride a decent bike and want to pick a unique one too.

Honda is available, Hero Honda has been just stopped ( i herd that the company that imported them is changing), I don't like the Honda stunner as it's more into sporty looks.

TVS - Honda - Bajaj is all over the place....

If you can wait for SZ-r then it's best because you will get a bike with 150cc at such a low price, in India it costs 65-68k.

Else as your height is also awesome so you can go with Dazzler, P150, P135 or P180. These bikes will serve you best in terms of your height and needs. Average would range from 40-60kmpl. Check it which one you need. But this bikes are 65k and more!!

            welcome to xbhp (:

Yamaha SZ-R is a good bike for daily commute and has proved to be a good bike. But let me tell you, i was also in the same dilemma for which bike should i go with, i am 6'2" and i was confused between SZ-R and FZ-S. I was not looking at FZ-S because of its low stance and i thought that the bike will not suit me. But, once i took the test drive, i was pretty comfortable with the seating position. SZ-R felt like a kinda tallish boy (i might be wrong). But, once i test drove the FZ-S, i instantly booked it. I am happily driving my baby for the past 7 months without any issues with it.

Look for FZ series incase it is available in your country.

            Cheerz!!!

thank you all for your help and advice, really appreciate it!

Fz-s is available here, I did not think about it much, but i will pay a visit to the showroom and check on it! Thank you for suggestions but i will opt out of Bajaj for now. I also would love to know what should I start to look at when getting my bike.

I did a research and one of the thing's was to look at the maintenance cost of the bike. I herd that compared to honda and bajaj, yamaha parts are expensive. is this true.

              drive safe!

What do you want? Maintenance or reliability. Just ride Bajaj and Yamaha bikes and you will find the difference. After Honda, Yamaha engines are masters in refinement. Think of the old Rx-100, it still sells more than to its buying price even after 20 years.

SZ series(if you can get SZ-R after sometime) or an FZ will be a suitable option for you..

SZ will return you better FE but FZ will provide you better styling & more power..choose accordingly

no offense to anyone but GS150R & Dazzler seems a bit boring even though when both of them very smooth & reliable vehicles..FZ has that X-Factor in it along with smoothness..
                      CBR150R will be very costly..

FZ is good but it's YAMAHA!!! Si need to think before you get one! Because it's true that Yamaha's SVC or spare parts cost are always higher than others very close to honda!! But Yamaha is eligible for every bit of it. FZ is one of the hottest city commuter today!
                          1. Excellent comfort
                          2. Riding Fun
                          3. Killer Looks
                          4. Good handling and braking
                          5. With an average of 40-45kmpl, previous FX use to give 35-40kmpl, latest all models from 2011 are pretty good in average terms!!

If you think for bajaj then even that's good but if you buy a sensible product then.
You can hit P180 or NS200 or P220, my personal recommendation would be FZ, it has a different class.

P220 only if you need power in affordable price with low SVC costs!!!

Thank you brothers.. if I may ask, what do you think of the new "Hero" company. it has refined its products (some of them).

When you plan for a FZ that means you are looking for 150cc comfortable with killer looks bike, So from that in Hero i like only one model that is Impulse which is different from current bike models in India. But sadly it is about to be shut down.

Hero is nothing without Honda, now we see that only. Due to some contract Hero has to close down Impulse/Majestro and ignitor, i guess!! Which is very sad!!

Hero has now signed a contract with Eric Bull R&D, to get some good tech in india.

So I would recommend please stay away from Hero, Choose with in Yamaha/Bajaj/honda/Suzuki or TVS....

If you ask for Hero still!! Then i would recommend Hunk with Dual Disc!!!only!!!

But you get more better choice if you pay 10k more, i,e Honda's DAZZLER with mono shock and Dual Disc!!!

So think wisely....very closely Hero will become like a mess!!! The current situation points too that only!!

Choose from Yamaha or Honda or Bajaj only!!!
