  • Need advice for buying gearless scooter

    Hi Guys,

need your advice for buying my first scooter... i have been following the forums looking for ppl seeking advice on buying a new gearless scooter but did not see many recent requests and so i thought i would seek your help on the same...

i have not ridden scooters due to confidence issues frankly much but now i need a scooter to commute to my office in Bangalore which is a 20 km to and fro commute...not too bothered by the mileage... i am 5'8" tall and had zeroed in on the Vespa LX125...i am totally floored by the looks of the scooter but have my reservations as i checked with people who own Vespas and they said that braking is not that good and also as i am a new driver i dint have enough confidence ... Would you suggest it to be a good option or should i look for some other options?

    Please suggest.

    Regards,
    John

Vespa is a good option, but it's costly, you have to pay a premium, but I don't know for what. Doesnt seem to perform too well, But hey, i haven't ridden it so my argument is kinda moot.
But let me suggest from the scooter I have ridden. TVS Wego and Honda Activa would be my two options I would put forward for you.
I personally loved the TVS Wego. But the Activa is mroe powerful I guess, but I havent tried comparing them as well, never needed to.

The wego felt more better to ride, since you are new to this as you said yourself, I would suggest the TVS Wego.

      Cheers

Thanks a lot for your advice Krishna!!! I test drove the Wego and the braking definitely felt better than the Vespa... but i am still not convinced of letting go of the Vespa...

I give priority for gearless scooters in this order:

          1. TVS WEGO (+ve: handling, brakes, metal body, fuel cap, storage space, looks, and made for ladies features -ve: None)
          2. Honda Activa/DIO (+ve:looks, fuel efficiency, dual braking safety, resale value -ve: morning starting trouble, bad service reputation, almost every one has these)
          3. Yamaha Ray/ Mahindra Duro (+ve: Cheap cost, powrerful engine, very good handling and braking. -ve: Not many but small ones like less storage space, little less fuel efficiency, made for ladies scooters hence low seat height)
          4. LML Vespa (+ve: 3 valve engine, mileage, pickup, retro looks -ve: cost, spares, worst front suspension, poor braking).

+ve: refined engine and tuning, looks and build quality, resale value, Very good head lamps ...
-ve : handling because of the front suspension very hard even for small potholes, very very bad service reputation not sure about your area..
Issue faced by me in the service... They made the key bend in the first service as a result the boot lock started to make problems and the center lock too. Found the engine overheating at 1500 kms on odo when checked with my mechanic the engine oil level was very low and the oil has no viscosity provided left the scooter first free service at 500kms.. scratches in the front mudguard very very poor customer relationship

Never faced with the starting problem in the morning even in cold conditions

                Welcome mate.

TVS Wego would be the ideal choice, Honda does have spares and service issues, and its very very common.

Now if you are a die hard fan of Vespa, you can get that , afterall the commute is a small one, but then you will have to tradeoff on some parts, which you know, the choice is yours to make. No matter how much anybody says, you'll still have vespa in mind, cause that's what your heart wants you to buy.

                Cheers

I am agree with krish2778 that vespa is approx 10k more but for what? (nothing other than brand name). I would suggest you TVS wego as I own it and it is a excellent scooter in terms of riding comfort or fuel efficiency.

For 10k extra, you get the eye-catching Vespa classic design which always turns heads, above average fuel economy and the most power from a scooter sold in India coupled with its super compact dimensions and feather weight making it a breeze to ride in the city. Of course this might not feel like too many extras for the 10k extra money, but people paid ~20k extra for the same bits, you are just lucky that Vespa LX125 recently had a ~10k price-cut when you came into the scooter market.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Re: Need advice for buying gearless scooter

whatever you buy make sure you just don't regret buying it.
take for example you really liked a scooter but bought something else. one day it goes past you while you driving you new scooter and then you wish you bought the one that you liked.! so whatever you buy buy with your heart.
i own a vespa and i know it was hard for me while braking but once the service center walla taught me the trick i now can brake will fill confidence. once one gets used to it then it won't be a problem at all. the secret for braking here is to brake in such a way that the weight of the scooter remains divided equally on both the tyres. the front suspension is not that good if you fill too much air on the front tyre.
am a happy vespa customer. agreed it is a bit costly but i bought with my heart for i loved its engine refinement and stability at high speeds. single chassis makes it very sturdy just like the old scooter n like it's looks. so i am happy with what i wanted. no scooter is perfect. remember that.
the initial buying amount is nothing but a one time payment. the cost of maintenance for all the scooters are almost the same. mileage depends on your driving style.
hope it helps you deciding what scooter you want to buy.
just make sure you enjoy whatever you drive
                          happy shopping and happy driving

I agree we should always follow our heart. Its better to regret buy a thing that our heart says than regretting everyday for not buying it.
