  • Which bike to buy?

I currently own a Discover 100cc model and am looking to move on to 150 or a 180cc bike. I'm 6 feet tall and weigh 75Kgs.

Please suggest a 150~180cc bike which should be
    1. Comfortable ride for both rider and pillion as I'd have to drop my mom off at work (The Disc 100 is proving to be a pain in the @$$ literally unless i sit back near the pillion while riding solo)
    2. Decent mileage 40~50 kmpl (70~75kmpl on Disc 100 right now)
    3. No vibes at speeds of 60/70kmph
    4. Budget right now seems to be 75k~90k
    5.Decent looks
    6. Mono shock vs dual shock. if it makes a difference in rider comfort

After reading some threads here I got some idea on Hero Hunk/Extreme, RTR 180, Honda CB Unicorn and Suzuki GS. Though not sure on which to get yet
So any suggestions on which to get would be most welcome.(please feel free to suggest other options not in the above mentioned ones)

    -Thanks
    Adi

Stick to Pulsar 180. It fulfills all your requirements. Pulsars are generously proportioned and you should have no issue of comfort on any Pulsar.

Take your mom for test rides and ask her opinion about which bike she is comfortable on. My mom is always comfy riding pillion with me on my Pulsar 220 and I am also 6ft tall.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.

      If your budget is till 90k then i will suggest Karizma R > P180 >Rtr 180
If mileage is your concern then go for suzuki GS

i'll be trying to test ride the P180 and RTR 180 this weekend since there is a bajaj and tvs showroom nearby.
@antz how long have you owned your pulsar? how does it fare on maintenance? I've read in some forums that Bajaj 2wheelers generally start to get constant problems with chain and stuff after couple of years? have you faced this?

forgot to mention in my first post that its for 100% city riding and i have a lean build, hopefully I wont look too funny/awkward on a P180!
and another reason i didnt mention pulsar in my op was due to the mob feeling i get when seeing pulsars(you stop at a signal and find out that you're surrounded by atleast 3~5 pulsars)

apart from p150/180 you can also have a look at unicorn/dazzler.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

#i have learnt to manipulate my own adrenaline and the perception of biking is different.
          #overkill is underrated.
#how random roads may appear there is always a destination.sigpic
#i don't subscribe to co-incidence,either it is the rider or the other moron on the road

(:)people keeps on saying add spark to life, bajaj got hold of that idea and added an extra spark to bike.

I have owned my Pulsar for almost 3.5 years now. It was from the first batch of the Carb. Pulsar 220. And its true that Bajaj 2 wheelers give problems with the chain after a couple of years. In fact, they give you a problem in about 20-24k km. Thats the time you need to replace the chain and sprocket kit (costs 1.2k with labour to replace). And then there is no chain related problem for the next 20-24k km.

This exact same problem occurs on bikes of ALL the other manufacturers too in more or less similar km intervals. Such a thing happens because a chain is a wear and tear part and will always need replacement after the end of its usable life (like you change a pencil when you have used it up) regardless of what badge the bike sports.

My bike is currently at 48k km and I take the bike all the way upto the 120s every single day. As long as you keep it well, it will keep serving you for years to come and thats the reason why you see 3-5 Pulsars on every signal.

Anyways, I don't think anybody looks awkward on any bike.. these are just made up myths by people who don't want you to get on a bigger bike than their own.

Finally, if you are still not very keen on getting a Pulsar, you could try the Suzuki GS150R or one of the 5 Honda based 150s (Xtreme, Hunk, Achiever, CB Unicorn, Dazzler)

All 6 of the aforementioned bikes will fulfill your criteria easily but are much less powerful than a Pulsar 180.

thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll check out those rides over the weekend.
my discover has started giving problems with chain/sprocket at 13k km..
been servicing the bike on a near monthly basis now and the chain starts giving sounds after 2days every time

Open up the chain cover and check chain slack. It shouldn't move more than 30mm at the place where the chain sags the most.

Check if tightening the chain is possible. If not (highly unlikely at just 13k km), and you are getting rid of the bike anyways, get 3-4 chain links removed by a mechanic. That should solve the chain issue in your bike.

pillion seat of avenger is not that comfortable.it maybe less flickable in city traffic, apart from that a good bike.

surprise surprise.. mom gave OK for getting a Thunderbird if I feel like getting one and now all of a sudden my dormant wish of owning a Thunderbird is rearing its head again. so its gonna be a shootout between a Unicorn CB/Pulsar(150or 180) and a Thunderbird 350.
@ antz does your mom ride side saddle on ur P180?

@harish i was riding beside an apache on my discover yesterday and found the rider seat to be at a lower level compared to my Discover so not sure if it would be comfortable for u. why not test ride it?

Why don't you consider YAMAHA SZ-R/SZ-X? The pillion seat is comfortable for even an elderly lady. Looks are great too!
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.
