If buying second hand, get a FZ 16. If getting new one, take the RTR 160. Both are light, comparatively low seat height. Decently powerful, to ride along side your CBR. Its better if she starts with these, rather than the 100CCs. I always say, FZ is the best learning bike, irrespective of gender, height, age.HH Dawn - TVS Star City - Yamaha Gladiator - TVS RTR 180 - Honda CBR 250R - Yamaha R3

Thank you all for the replies. I am a bit scared about a mad bike like RX for a starter...it can launch you into air if you are not careful! and IMO, the riding style for a 2 stroke is very different from the riding style for a 4-stroke. I was thinking of the Twister - what are your opinions on the twister as a starter bike?
@metaphoric.el As of now, we are looking at bikes lighter than 140kgs and considering the Fazer and Duke, both at 136 kgs.
The Apache is also light (136kgs) and nifty, but I am doubtful of it's capabilities as a tourer. Same does for other lightweight bikes (R15, CBR150 - 138kgs) in that performance bracket.Last edited by bbsrailfan; 04-16-2013, 11:50 AM.Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. No 2Strokes especially RX's they are very light and easy to handle but they are not good bikes for a starter whoever it may be either a boy or girl .... I am surprised why no one is suggesting Yamaha Crux its a very nimble handler (cos its a Yamaha) very light and has a decent power too .... Okay when coming to performance bracket naked bikes are better for a starter when compared to full faired bikes ..Originally posted by bbsrailfan View PostThank you all for the replies. Apache no it is does not have a good riding position atleast to me because I am using RTR-180 for the past two weeks .. I have not ridden KTM and coming to FZ its a best handler and low saddle seat makes it more comfortable and a good tourer

@ Metohoric Valid point. That is why I said "I guess". Since, I don't know anybody of that height!!!
Just try to keep the gear shift pattern common between learner bike and later bike. As it can be a B to learn on a 4 up shift like the Hero's and then switch to 1 down 4 up as on most other bikes.Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Mmmmh but if you ask me, in order to start learning a bike, it's best if you get a used discover 100 or even try hero bikes such as splendor or passion (which are light in weight and does not have that kind of a power like that of an rx) and then try riding on different bikes. . . And also she is just 5'3'', I think it'l be best if you start her on the above said bikes which will be safer too and then she can ride others. . .Originally posted by viks View PostYes, its a wild wild horse, no doubt, but 6 months down the line, if she is gonna ride duke 200, then probably she should tame this wild horse first.

Strongly agree, twister is the best for learning, nice compact height, light weight and great average too, its a very good handler, honestly, it does have a skinny rear tyre but trust me, it handles well, btw, my gal learnt riding on ct 100 and then she was capable of riding stunner but gets scared very unnecessarilyOriginally posted by bbsrailfan View PostWhy is it that nobody has mentioned the Honda Twister? It is very light, and not too powerful. Will it be suitable as a learner?
, so for now, she is happy with her scooty, but she desperately wants to try out avenger.

True! That being said, Twister is an perfect choice with that one down-3 up shifter.Originally posted by The Monk View PostJust try to keep the gear shift pattern common between learner bike and later bike. I would suggest a Unicorn, best bike for anybody maybe the seat is little high but I guess that's a minor detail. Ask her to TD one and don't go for very small capacity bikes else she won't be able to keep up with you on tours. Unicorn is a trouble free and easy bike to handle once the basics are learnt. Let her start on something of a good bike which is current but performs well.
The first thing for her to learn would be to be able to momentarily stop the bike when needed and proceed and avoid that lady habit of riding with legs stretched out.

May be am not experienced enuf to comment on what bike, but I feel Twister or Dazzler are great for learning. Both are nimble to handle and are comparatively smaller than most others. But they wont feel like very small bikes. Twister is very light weight IMHO as is Dazzler.

I tried my hands on a Shogun first and then on A Rx100. I can vouch for the shogun as I felt very comfortable. My cousin was inside his house telling how to put the bike in gear and by then I took it out for a 1km ride, even though I had no prior experience in riding.Originally posted by metaphoric.elLol, remembered trying to teach a friend of mine, "How to ride a bike" on a RX-100 ! And now he's a wheelie expert..
Then he let me try the Rx100 and yes I did a wheelie then.
From then on I'm cautious enuf that when I bought a bike years later I looked for one with ABS and back wheel lift off protection.
Never a fan of doing stunts myself.

I would never suggest a 2-stroke as I know how mad it can be.... did you try looking at Yamaha SZX. Also in weekends why dont you take her to different showrooms and tell her to sit and see how comfortable it is for her... that way you can narrow down your choices as well

It seems shes a beginner and isnt looking for something serious, so its simple get her a toy, which has enough thump to keep her exited and boost her spirits and at the same time easy on maintenance. Youre best bet IMHO would be a FZ, the thing looks badass but isnt really something which could hurt her, small and nimble to ride with added stability thanks to the 140 tires at rear. And best of all, everything including the tank is made of plastic, so less maintenance cost if she had a habit of droping bikes. Last but not least the frame, its built to handle a quarter liter block at the least.
