  • Purchasing a new Bike!!!

    Dear All,

    Hi.... I am Kunal.

I have joined recently at xbhp.com. I am planning to purchase a new bike. can you please help me with the available options in the market!!! Parameters are mentioned below.

    1. Age: 28 yrs.
    2. Weight: 54 kgs.
    3. Height: 5'6".
    4. Location: Kolkata.
    5. Engine capacity: 135cc to 160cc
    6. Usage: 35 kms - 40 kms daily commuting
    7. Travelling domain: Mostly city traffic. Very rare weekends on highways.
    8. Mileage: 50 kmpl to 55 kmpl.
    9. Budget: Rs. 60,000/- to Rs. 70,000/-
    10. I am looking for a sensible bike which can maneuver easily through city traffic without much changes in the gear.

    11. I also would prefer a bike with a larger wheelbase as i believe it would provide a better handling.

Please help with the choice and also let me know if you need any more information. I would also like to mention that I have sent messages to a couple of Senior Members of xbhp, as i was unable to post here. Thanks to those members who helped me out with their replies. At last on my profile being approved, am posting here.

Certain observations which I found regarding a few bikes by riding and from riders are mentioned below.

    Hero Moto Corp:

    1) CBZ Extreme as far as i got to know from users, it gives a mileage of 40 kmpl to 45 kmpl. (approx)
    2) Hunk I suppose would be on the same platform in terms of mileage.
    3) Ignitor I like the design and the looks, but is it that will its engine be as smooth as the once very famous Hero Honda Ambition AMI? Because I rode the Ambition and found the engine to be very smooth. Will Ignitor be similar to that?
    4) Impulse, I prefer not to go with it in terms of the mono shocker. Is it a myth or true that Rear Mono Shocker bikes are not Indian
    road friendly? Please help!
    5) Passion Pro: I have also tried the passion pro. In the city its agreeable, but when on the highway I often felt a requirement of an additional gear. Though, its a commuter bike and its lives up to its religion ethically!!

    Honda:

    1) CB Trigger: I am looking forward to some user reviews as to how it is on road. Although the mono shocker is an issue here too.
    2) Stunner CBF: I am not sure how a bike without a kick lever would cope up in the Indian Environmental Conditions.

    Yamaha:

    1) SZR: Keeping the FE (50 kmpl to 55kmpl) in mind I guess in 150cc segment I am left with SZR only!!

    Bajaj:

    1) Pulsar: I am not keen on going for the pulsar series except 135 LS. I have driven Pulsar 135 LS and found the engine to be very refined and smooth. Will it be a good buy in terms of VFM, FE and durability?

    TVS:

    1) Apache is the only option I want to try if its TVS.

Am looking for a bike with the above mentioned FE and yes a bit sporty but a refined, sensible and matured ride!!

I might sound very choosy and with a hell lot of queries. But as its my first bike, I hope you can understand.

    Please help!

Ignitor is a good refined bike with good FE.....
SZR is overall a good bike and FE is decent.....
P135LS has very good FE and good amount of raw power..VFM....but durability should be an issue.

It would be better if owners themselves comment on the longevity/durability of their own bike. You can read their ownership experiences here and also get in touch with them if you so please.

I would suggest you to please go through the Pulsar 135LS ownership thread here: http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/motorcyc...ar-135-ls.html

              +1 to antz.bin

              - Even I wonder why every bike selection thread becomes bajaj's quality debate thread.. Have been noticing this from many days. I would save my comments on Bajaj's quality till I myself own one!

It starts with "I heard that Bajaj's.."

Even I heard that the FZ's rear is puncture magnet. After having just 1 puncture in the last 14000 km, that too from a big nail, I can say that what we 'hear' is not always correct.

Thanks, "MidnightEvil Parth" for your feedback. Ignitor, I should test drive once as you are saying and SZR and P135LS are surely on my list of the would be's!!!! Thanks again for your reply, it helped me!!!!

The dry weight of GS150R is mere 134 kgs. The kerb weight of 149 kgs is with 15.5 litre fuel, engine oil, kick start lever, full chain cover and saree guard.

Even with that weight, a FE of about 55-60 kml is guaranteed if the bike is sanely ridden. Going through its ownership thread you can see that it is almost trouble free.

The 6th gear in which you can ride at mere 30 kmh speed and can accelerate from there, offers a smooth riding at 100-115 kmh speed if you are a speed maniac.

Sales of GS is lagging behind due to the lack of advertisements and dealership network. Another reason is the lack of interest from dealers as the commission they get from the sales of GS is less than they get by selling Suzuki’s other bikes and scooter.

My GS is 31500 kms old now.

Go for a test ride and decide.

Ignitor is based on Honda's Stunner platform with some tweaks. It will be a smooth rider, though not an outstanding performer.

                      4) Impulse, I prefer not to go with it in terms of the mono shocker. Is it a myth or true that Rear Mono Shocker bikes are not Indian
                      road friendly? Please help!
Well, the CBR comes with a Monoshock and it's as comfortable as a Volvo! So this assumption is only a myth!

                      1) CB Trigger: I am looking forward to some user reviews as to how it is on road. Although the mono shocker is an issue here too.
The Trigger will be a 'tweaked' Dazzler. The ergonomics, engine refinement and FE will be almost the same. The differences will be as minimal as the difference between Xtreme vs Hunk.

                      2) Stunner CBF: I am not sure how a bike without a kick lever would cope up in the Indian Environmental Conditions.
We have 2 bikes in our family that don't have a kick lever (CBR and SZR) - and we never faced an issue till date

                      1) SZR: Keeping the FE (50 kmpl to 55kmpl) in mind I guess in 150cc segment I am left with SZR only!!
The actual FE is around 40-45.Ultra Smooth engine. But the most comfortable and & rider-friendly of the lot.
                      Some replies in bold above.

The SZR is a good choice. Why don;t you take a TR on the GS150R? It's an excellent machine, but make sure you check the availability of service centers near your place.
If you are looking for mileage, choose the Ignitor. For performance, you can choose between Trigger, SZ-R or GS150R or the RTR160 (but RTR won't be as refined as SZR or GS)

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

I don’t know how Trigger is, GS150R is far superior than SZ-R.

Agreeing to all other facts, I would like to let you know I could have gone for GS 150R , but service network is a matter of concern. At my place, there is not much authorized service network of Suzuki.

Thanks for all your feedback. For GS150R, I would have to trade it off due to unavailability of service station near my place. RTR I have already ruled out due to its lack of refinement keeping in mind the lot of bikes above. So, I am left of with SZR and Ignitor. Will test ride both and then decide. However, rightly said by you. If I am looking for 50 kmpl above mileage then I should go for Ignitor. Or Else, it would be SZR.

As per your budget and kmpl margin I feel you should go for P150 or P135.

INMO Nothing Beats FZ still in India in handling and comfort. It's a real traffic slicer!

It is charm to ride FZ in traffic. But this is over your budget and gives 40-45kmpl.

P150 is now too outdated a machine. But yes, the P135 is a worthy contender with the 'best of both worlds' approach. But has a slightly underpowered low-end, which may make it feel sluggish in b2b traffic.
