  • My first motorbike and I need help !!

    Hello guys,

This is my first post here from a new account since I couldn't post from my old one. After a gloomy period of time in my life, there's some sunshine recently. I have gotten a new job and with a new job comes, a new motorcycle.

I have been riding a 2007 Honda Unicorn for the last 6 years, and I felt its time for a change. The 150cc felt underpowered and I need an upgrade in terms of displacement and I am looking around the 250cc to 400cc machines (the fuel prices has hit the 100 mark, and I don't want to burn my pocket on lower fuel efficient machines). I will be using the motorcycle mainly on my office commutes (once the WFH stops), in the city and occasional weekend tours. The motorcycle must be easy on the ergo, not too sporty as in R15 and should be comfortable for the pillion as well. The most important criteria is the reliability. I plan to use this for at least next 5 years, and I don't intend the bike to be at the service centers most of the time. And my budget is 2.5L on road (could extend another 10k). I am 6 ft and a bit on the bulkier side as well. The following are my shortlisted bikes :

    1. Honda CB 350 - The name Highness sucks, but hey what's in a name ? I've been following Abhinav and Motovinn77 vlogs on YouTube and ticks all my boxes as well. I am from Bengaluru, so the Bigwing isn't any problem, in fact its close to home as well. The RS version looks attractive but the additional 10k doesn't justify it and also less customization options on this variant.

    2. Bajaj Dominar - Again, ticks all the boxes and is more powerful than the Honda and looks better on the paper and maybe the most VFM. But I've also seen some videos of engine break down and I need clarity on that. If the 2021 models don't have this problem, might as well go for this. Also, the reviews for the service centers aren't that promising. How's the Kasturba Road Khivraj showroom ? Need some insights from the Bengaluru Dominar owners on this one. Also any newer version upcoming ?

    3. RE Himalayan - Ticks all boxes. But feels underpowered on the highway. Again, need some insights from the Himalayan owners regarding the service and the reliability.

I've ridden the Classic 350, and the vibrations are too much. The Meteors cruiser style didn't appeal to me as well . I've ridden the Jawa 42 but felt the seat height too short for me. RE Interceptor looks good but it overshoots my budget. If the Hero Xpulse had a bigger engine, would have made my shortlist as well. And no KTM guys.

What do you guys think ? Completely open for suggestions. And thanks for the help and time taken guys. Forgive any mistakes made.

This is what i have to say about these motorcycles.
I've ridden all three but have done a lot of Kms on the Himalayan

      1. Honda CB 350 - I don't like the look as it looks like a Bajaj V to me. Smooth, Average Thump nut nahh it doesn't look premium to me at all.
      2. Bajaj Dominar - Very powerful, comfortable but the after market options for touring irritate me also it has no character.
      3. RE Himalayan - Definitely ticks all boxes. Adequate power for highway as I've done 110-120 Kmph for 9 hours on it and as I reached home at least I could unload and unpack my own luggage.
You can go faster on the highway on other motorcycles but for how long?
the comfort it gives on the highway in terms of seat and riding posture is like no other. Also you will never have to worry about spares and accessories.

        1. Highness - I own one and I am happy with it. But picking RS would be a mistake as the ergo will be lesser comfortable than the highness. I did find the torquey nature a little troubling for me at lower speeds though as it ends up feeling a little jerky. Might be my driving too. Great for city and ok for touring.
        2. Dominar - great tourer and good vfm. But heavy to manage in the city. Try test riding it in city before finalizing on it.
        3. Himalayan - has ample power for your practical touring needs in Indian conditions. As with dominar, you will see some reliability issues here and there but nothing deal breaker. Riding stance would be most comfortable among all the listed bikes here. However, I felt that city riding wasn't that easy as it was quite heavy. Straight line stability is better.

At the end of the day, whichever bike you pick you will have to compromise on something or the other. So, that's a plunge you will have to take yourself.
I like to meditate a lot.. On my BIKE!
