  • Help me Choose my first bike

Hi, this is vivek from kolkata. I'm planning to buy a bike for daily commuting. I have ridden my uncle's Bajaj Chetak a couple of times but have never ridden a bike before. So will it be be okay for me to buy a new bike and learn to ride with it or should I go for a second hand bike instead for learning and then switch to a new bike. I'd personally prefer to get a new one as I don't have that kind of a budget to get two bikes. I would like some of the experienced riders' opinion on whether it is okay for me to get a new bike for learning or not.

    1. Budget - 60000-70000[can be extended a little bit]
    2. Age - 22
    3. Height - 5"6
    4. Weight - 78 kg
    5. Intended usage - College commute, Weekend vacation trips[about 200 km at a stretch with a pillion rider]
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement - the more the merrier... but should be at least 50kmpl+
    7. City & Highway percentage usage - City-80% & highway-20%
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running - daily 20-30 kms
    9. City of residence - Kolkata, West Bengal
    10. Brand / Bike type preference - no preference for brand

Not a speed freak so I'll be a decent rider, though would like to be ahead as the signal turns green. Most of the time I'll have a pillion rider. My preferences[in order] are 1.good handling, 2.comfort, 3.fuel efficiency and 4.looks[would prefer a non-commuterish look, at least one with single tone colour. I don't like too much graphics job]

Though I had Yamaha Fz16 in my mind for quite sometime but after learning of its fuel consumption level I've ruled it out. I've zeroed down to two bikes 1. Bajaj Pulsar 135ls and 2. Honda CBF Stunner. Which bike among these two should be good for me? You can suggest me if there is any other bike that i should go for. Thank You.

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

You can check out Hero Ignitor too. It has the same engine as Stunner, digital speedo console, Tubeless tires and now Hero is offering 5years/70k kms warranty.

Why don't you check out pulsar 150?aprox 74k on road(pls confirm)
It is a far successful model than pulsar 135 and honda stunner....lack of graphics make it look real classy.
You will get around 50 if neatly maintained.

Pulsar 150 is not that cheap I believe.
My friend in Kerala told he got his brand new P150 for 80k on road.

How about a Discover 125ST? It got the looks and the power is adequate for the things you intend to do. No matter how bad your riding style is, you'll get 50+ Kmpl on this bike. It's priced at 58,890 Ex-showroom in Kolkata.
            I am back!

I read somewhere that Hero is going stop production of Impulse, Achiever & Ignitor from next year. So I'm not in for of Ignitor.

It's somewhere around 80k here in kolkata.

I have it in my mind also..but it costs around 68K on road in kolkata and I'd prefer Pulsar 135ls which costs around 72k if choosing a Bajaj bike.

I like it also. But it does not have kick-start which may be a problem for me as my bike will be out in the open all year round.

Its heard from the time of launch of Ignitor that they're going to stop its production. If they're stopping production of Ignitor due to Honda tech, they'd need to stop production of most of their bikes starting from Karizma... And Hero themselves have denied this news. And you can see more Ignitors on road than Stunner these days.
But, both are really good bikes. I believe, Stunner has shorter gearing and will give you better acceleration through gears, while Ignitor has slight upper edge in mileage.

                  Now its your call.

                    Hi Vivekdindia,

I am also of your physique and I ride Pulsar 150 now. I have ridden Pul-135 of my friends many times and believe me, I will take an auto instead of riding that bike. The seating posture is extremely bad though the bike itself is quite good.

If you are looking for comfortable ride, check out Honda Unicorn. Its old though, but riding posture is just perfect for your height; besides its in your budget, 150 CC with decent FE and a reliable brand. Check it out.

I hope you are having a budget of at least 1500 for a new helmet.

                    Happy and Safe riding,
                    Rohit

Honda Unicorn looks too commuterish and the Pulsar 150 costs around 80k. Pulsar 135ls is within my budget, that's why I'm opting for it. I have a budget of 3-4k for basic safety gears. I think I can get a decent helmet.
