  • What bike?

    Hi all,

I planning to buy a new bike and would like some opinions from enthusiasts out here to make a good decision.

Currently I have a TVS fiero f2 and a victor. My f2 is 2003 model and has completed 1lac kms on odo , victor has done around 30K on odo. I really like my f2 which I have used for 10yrs now. Victor is comfortable and good for short distance travel say less than 15kms one way, it feels out of breath on open roads and beyond 60km/h speed.

I am around 5ft 9'', weigh 75kgs. I travel around 50kms every day with 25% traffic being bumper to bumper traffic. So I need a bike with ample amount of power/torque to handle city traffic(no highways or off roading ), it should not struggle to reach 80-100 kms/h speed when needed. The suspensions should be comfortable, my f2 transmits all the shocks from the road directly to my head via the spine. Victor is very comfortable in this aspect.

I prefer an upright riding position and don't want to commute everyday as shown in this pic Click image for larger version

I can spend around 2-2.5lacs on the new machine and also prefer a bike which doesn't make me to visit service station every other day. Servicing every 2.5k kms and occasional maintenance/replacements is fine. I have done lot of diy and self maintenance in the past but at this moment I don't have luxury of time to this so I want a reliable machine.

Based on all the above requirements I have duke 390, 200, Apache 180 abs and RE classic 500 in my mind. Waiting time for RE is 12-14 months so had to rule out this option as I don't prefer waiting 14 months.

My initial thoughts were to go for duke 200 as 390 has longer gear ratios and the sales guy at KTM told me that 200 was more suited to city traffic but after reading lot of reviews and ownership experinces I am bit apprehensive on duke 200 also as many claim there are heating issues in bumper to bumper traffic and it throws a lot slush during monsoons. Cleaning and maintenance of radiator in monsoon season etc ,now I am no longer sure about my decision so open to check other options as well. As long as most of my criteria is met I don't mind looking at bajaj, yamaha stables also..

    Any thoughts?

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

      Re: What bike?

RE ruled out perfectly..Since you have ruled out duke 200 as well..you can very well consider duke390 since it fits your budget and is a premium bike, but don't think twice only if you are least bothered about its fuel efficiency..though i have not ridden apacheRTR,being a pillion,i heavily felt the vibrations running through..So take a test ride and if you are ok with the vibrations,ApacheRTR 180 is a sensible choice..

Other options in the market that i would consider if i were you:
      1.CBR 250
      2.Pulsar 200ns

How about CBR250R with ABS, you'll get everything in that or else try out the new pulsar 200NS. . . If you can wait for some time, Hero's ZMR250cc (speculated) is on it's way, I think that'd be good, . .

        PS: Personally, I would prefer you CBR250R. . .

        Cheers!!!
        Yamaha Rx135 - 2005 - 2007 (stolen )
        Scooty Pep - 2008 - 2012 (sold)
        Honda Unicorn - 2012 - 2015 (crashed)
Hero Honda Splendor+ 2015 - present (temporary ride)
        Bajaj Pulsar AS200 - 16th September 2015 - present ride

        10 years into riding :D

I have not ruled out duke 200, just read a lot of reviews and found out that it has its fair share of issues. I haven't TR 200NS and apache 180 yet but plan to do it very soon. CBR 250 doesnt suit me because I don't have luxury of parking space. Currently I can fit in a duke,200ns or an apache 180 very easily in the space available. 200NS could have been ok but I am not sure how a pulsar will be after 3-4 yrs and I dont want to replace very often, I have ridden f2 for 10yrs I tend to stick with a bike once i buy it. I dont want to buy something and later repent that I am not being able to use it. So basically I need a work horse(with power when needed) to drive only in city traffic with less maintenance(cost is not the issue but I don't find much time to go to service station very often)

The only logical and practical option going by your needs works out to be the Duke200. Seems to fit all your requirements point to point. As for user reviews, a bit of issues are expected, but I'm sure it wont be as much as an NS definately. The NS is certainly not as good as the duke which is a bit more taut and tuned to be a bit crisper and a tad more spunky.
Or else you could try waiting for the naked CB150R, which has no fixed launch date yet though. CB500F is gonna take time and may exceed you budget by a lac or so.

              Re: What bike?

I have ruled out apache 180 abs. I had been to Ashwa Motors(one of the TVS dealers in Bangalore). I was appalled by their behavior, I enquired about on road price of apache 180 abs for which a no knowledge sales representative looked at the list and told it is around 98K. I later asked for a TR of 180 abs for which she said there is no test drive for 180 abs. I asked how am I supposed to know the effectiveness of abs without a TR. She did not know what to answer so she went back and sent another representative. This new guy came and told the same answer and the reason he quoted was there is no apache 180 abs test drive vehicle. He said that apache 180 abs is not a fast moving vehicle so they don't have a test drive vehicle. Then I later asked if I could at least test ride a normal 180 for which he replied "Yes we have normal 180 but you can test ride only 160"
According to sales people I am supposed make a decision to buy or not to buy an apache 180 abs by test riding normal apache 160!

My old vehicles are from TVS,this was the only reason why I thought of giving it another shot. In terms of technology only ABS is the additional factor which made me consider this option. I went to TVS in spite of knowing that apache engines vibrate a lot. I was ready to ignore that fact also. I am not sure if all TVS show rooms are like this or this is one of those rare cases but either way if this is the attitude then I am sure they are all set to drop down even further in terms of all india sales.

Now it is just duke 200 and 200ns and mostly I will go with the former.

Appreciate all your inputs and thoughts, thanks a lot guys.

                Re: What bike?

                Hi there
I've been using my duke 200 for the past 5 months. I too ride 50 kms daily and even through a lot of traffic. The heat issue is not a great deal and now I'm used to it. You only feel the heat when the radiator fan turns on which is around 3-4 times if riding through traffic. The bike's amazing on both city roads and highways. However in city a lot of gear change is needed which is not the case with 390 courtesy its tall gears. The bike is very messy in rains. But that's an issue for my cleaner not me . The brakes are the beat in its class and the 390 ones are even better because of the abs. For the messy part these is a small attachment available for the front mud guard which reduces the mess to a large extent. Do take a test ride of both the dukes and then make up your mind. Even though you've ruled out RE I would advice you to take a td of tb500 just in case. One more thing I noticed was the cheap and easily availability of spares for dukes at svc. The spares are actually a lot cheaper than bikes like cbr and all.

Thanks for your inputs. Frequent gear changes is not a issue I am used to that on my f2 also. I can live with. The only reason I did not consider 390 was because of its tall gear ratios. I will never be using 6th gear in 390 and I don't go highways. Even with other gears I am not sure I will be using them that much in bangalore traffic.. So with 390 I will always be using the bike sub optimally. Regarding the other issues on duke , I am now ok with those things also. I will look at tb500 also once waiting time is a big put off though..

Well the waiting time can be reduced if you can find some contact in the company. But it still would be around 2 months provided you find someone who is willing to help. One of my teachers knew an employee who got him his bike delivered in 1.5 months. Or else duke 200 is still the best choice and readily available.
