This is just a illusion will keep you bit disturbed during initial days. Better, learn to drive first, get a license and then go for the test drive, if you are comfortable with these facts, you can go for fazer.
I have a license I got by riding a M80 (no money involved, got it nice and clean) but that doesnt amount to much, does it (I didnt even have to change gears just ride it out, albeit on a very very rainy day with a free-rotating seat that counteracted whater turn you wanted to impart to the handlebars - an incident I'd rather forget overall) ?

I will not be able to take a test ride as it stands, but now I am thinking of maybe trying out to learn two wheelers by getting bikes on rent. Afterall my purchase is some time away.

Can somebody comment on the gear purchase part ?

Also, is it possible to install the Electricals (alternator?) from the R15 to the fazer so that it can easily power the two headlamps simultaneously, should I go for a mod ?

I'd also like some suggestions for a Helmet and riding gear. I'd put the combined budget at ~15k at the moment.

Regarding Helmets, I like the ones that have the whole front movable - like it helps drink or eat something. And I'd prefer them to be matte black (if it wouldnt be an issue in the Bangalore summer for 3 hr rides)

Re: First time rider, love the Fazer, budget not much of a constraint

Pinging this thread again.

Purchase planned for end of March or April now. Settled with the Fazer again after considering the options including the R15 (Rear seat is unforgiving on V2.0), CBR250 (too expensive), Duke 200 (Too expensive + poor rear seat). I wavered heavily towards the Pulsar 220 in the meantime (those beautiful headlights ) but the reliability concerns are something I would not wish to bother with.

So the current plan is to get the Fazer and install Bi-xenon projectors (I dont care about the looks, this is purely for the illumination). I am an electronics graduate, so the electricals, hopefully wouldnt be an issue (I think I have read enough on this and I am pretty confident of doing the rewinding of the coil, changing the RR etc. myself), but I am not so sure about the mechanics. Will the below projectors be retro-fittable into the Fazer headlamp assembly , without having to build any support structures or something ?

1. Projector Headlight With DUAL Angel Eye & Bi-xenon HID Kit ( With H/L Beam) | eBay
2. Car Headlight Projectors With DUAL Angel Eye & Bi-xenon HID Kit ( With H/L Beam) | eBay

Both of them tell that they "fit" H1/H4/H7 bulb (sockets?)

What kind of socket does the Fazer have ? More importantly is it true that i can just plug out my original bulb and put these projector assemblies in their place instead without having to do anything else in the form of modifications ? Will the socket support the weight of these projectors while it was designed for just holding a light (as in not-heavy) bulb ?

I have mailed the sellers already, but would like the knowledgeable people here comment on the matter. Thanks everyone once again.

Re: First time rider, love the Fazer, budget not much of a constraint

As for what bike... Fazer is just brilliant... you've thought about it and the refinement of a Yamaha you can depend on, also a very nice rigid chassis... Maybe less on power if looked at in some ways but its an amazingly capable performer on the highways, weekend runs etc as well as city traffic. And I personally like the Semi Faired Fazer better than the naked one... Love the dual lights and the poise.

You got loads of time to plan out your gear purchases, leaving it to the guys who know about this to help you out... youve got a fair budget set for it.

Cheers.

Re: First time rider, love the Fazer, budget not much of a constraint

Fazer uses H4 socket.
Handling and braking(despite the rear drum) is awesome.
Fazer is heavier than fz16, about 4-5 kg more.
Headlight are okish, cannot be compared to p220 lights. Even if you upgrade to 60/55 bulbs, there will be a small difference. I think it's due to poor headlight(reflector) design.
Top speed 106-109kph(the real speed) on speedometer it will show 120+ just to make you feel better
Quality and reliability is very good.
_______________
After owning the fazer for 40k kms things I hate about this bike:
Not powerful, for the bulk it carry, it needs 2-3bhp more.
Engine is not so rev-happy.
Headlights suck.
Lack of top end and engine getting stressed over 70kph.
Fazer won't go above 8.2k rpm in 5th gear so to cruise at 90kph you'll need to get close to 7k rpm. That's too close to the limit of the engine. The comfortable cruising speed of fazer is 70kph.

At 40k kms I replaced bore and piston due to piston ring leaking also bore had scratch marks. I don't know how it happened, I've always replaced engine oil at or before 3k kms.
It maybe happened due to:
Manufacturing defect.
Higher cruising speed for long time on mineral oil.
So if you're a touring type guy, use SS oil instead of mineral(svc uses mineral)
If you're gonna buy this bike I'd say go for it, it's a beautifully handling machine.
Fazer now costs 90k or something, ill say wait some more months to see if there are better bikes getting launched in that price range.
Or
Get a second hand R15 v1.

I would suggest you to learn riding on someone's bike which will take not more than 3-4 days to get comfortable. Then buy a pulsar 200ns because fazer is too much underpowered and if you are not changing the bike within an year, you will get bored with it.

Re: First time rider, love the Fazer, budget not much of a constraint

I can't stress upon this enough: Learn to ride before you decide to buy a bike. Perhaps a friend will help out. If nothing else works, go with a friend to a place (like Hampi or Goa) where they rent bikes out and ride the available options. Then take a test ride of all the bikes shortlisted and only then make your final decision.

The Fazer, being a Yamaha will make you happy in the handling and fit/finish departments. Where you will find it lacking is the power department, it's engine is not happy when ridden at speeds. The fuel economy is lower than the other 150s and makes you wonder why you can't get the power when you're not getting the mileage.

Look hard and deep, well beyond your initial purchase and decide if these factors can affect your overall ownership experience 6 months or later. Other issues have been listed by Fazer owners which are irritants and become deal breakers in the future.

You really need to be able to ride a bike to understand your own needs; your buying one without knowing how you will ride and how your expectations will develop makes it difficult to choose the right bike. The Fazer is a great buy but has its flaws. It has been around for a while and Yamaha seems complacent and uncaring about the flaws.

Of the current breed of bikes available, the P200NS gets my firm vote for someone who wants a good balance of price/performance/handling/features. If you're ***really*** sure you don't care for power then take a good look at the Honda Trigger as well.

Re: First time rider, love the Fazer, budget not much of a constraint

Thanks everyone for the responses. Especially christo for the nice log term breakup.

Regarding buying RE, I am too light (~60kg) and secondly from what I read, its not the best in city traffic (I'll likely hit a good deal of traffic despite only ~8 km away from office).

The 200NS (and the 220) were in the running, but I dont like the looks of the 200NS enough to care for the extra power (Love the 220's headlamp, but reliability issues abound).

RTR - Hear concerns about stability in windy highways.

I know the Fazer is far from perfect (no hands-on experience) but it seems to offer the best overall package for my needs. And the beautiful front makes it very hard to consider anything else, unless there is something seriously more impressive. :|

Rear seat is damn near impossible to use

Version 1 is good, but all seconds are largely well used models. A newbie like me dont know much about what to look for when inspecting and that worries me. And they cost like 75k+ which is too close to what a brand new Fazer would cost. Not saying it isnt worth it, but the idea of paying so much for a used bike.. you know..

Is there any Fazer refresh or 200NS faired version in the pipeline in 6 months time by any chance ? Basically, anything with decent reliability, good looks and a usable rear seat ?
