  • Used Duke 200 OR a new one?

    Hi,

My 2008 Pulsar 200 is beginning to grow old for me and so I'm looking for an upgrade. Had narrowed down choices to Pulsar 200Ns and the Duke 200. As is already known, there's a difference of about 50,000/- INR between the prices of both. After a test ride on each bike, I have now made up my mind to purchase the Duke 200.

Here's the question. Does it make sense to purchase a used Duke 200 (after getting it thoroughly checked by my trusted mechanic)?
Here's what raises the question in my head:
    • There are very very few Dukes out there on the road.
      • Is it Not a popular bike?
      • Any chances of it being discontinued in the near future? (I've had a traumatizingly bad experience with my LML adreno after it was discontinued)

    • The used motorcycle market (@Rasta Peth, Pune) has about just 1-2 used Dukes in all.
      • Does it have a very low resale value?
      • From Quikr, OLX and what I've heard from mechanics, a 15-18 month moderately used Duke sells around 80-85K.

    • Per mechanics, the drastically low resale value is because most users aren't interested in purchasing such a powerful bike as there are no good roads in Pune to ride (Obviously I dont believe him on that one... but then I still dont know why it has such a low resale value)

JFYI: I have the following offers from prospective sellers (gathered from the www)

    a. Pune Passing - April 2012. Single Owner, ~20,000Kms. Price: 80,000/-INR (negotiable).
    b. Aurangabad Passing - First Lot of bikes from 2012. Single Owner,~14,000Kms. Price: 85,000/-INR (non-negotiable). Recently changed rear tyre + serviced bike, spending 4,800/-
    c. Pune Passing - June 2012. Two Owners,~10,600Kms. Price 82,000 (negotiable).
    d. Pune Passing - Mid 2012. Single Owner, ~10,500 Kms. Price 93,000/- (non-negotiable). Has original handguards worth 6,000/-INR from Austria

And here's answers to the usual questions for this section of the forum

    1. Budget: ~85,000/- INR (That's the best I can manage from my credit Cash Advance by paying about 4,000/- extra in 12 months. For a new/higher priced bike I will have to take a bike loan and spend around 13,000/- extra as interest)
    2. Age: 31
    3. Height: 5 10'
    4. Weight: 87Kgs
    5. Intended usage: Mostly Office Commute (15-20 kms each side).
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement: ~30
    7. City & Highway percentage usage: 95% City
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running: 30 - 40Kms
    9. City / Town /Village of residence : Pune
    10. Brand / Bike type preference : Duke 200

Many thanks in advance for your help and time.

    Ride Safe.

Very nice and detailed query . Well IMHO any mule is tuned to the character of the rider, so there will be remains of that character in the bikes genes . You need to be considering when you buy a used bike, otherwise there is nothing wrong in buying a used one. As you told your budget constrained to 85k ( I hope + 10k would be fine) you have only a choice of taking a used D200 or go for any other bike that fits in to that budget like P220 or 200ns.

Btw, even I had the same question on the popularity of the Duke, but you know just as in your case here (in our country) many things are decided upon tight budgets, Duke is a premium bike its sold on a premium price, and that is the reason why you dont see as many Dukes on the road compared to a bike like P220. We were inherently grown up by our parents to spend money wisely and not to waste a penny so we always want more VFM .

IMO if you are looking for something used , then as an option , a v1 R15 would be better value. If you are lucky enough to find a tidy low mileage bike , just go for it. Plus , you will save a bundle of cash which you can use to soup it up. Great daily ride , silky smooth power delivery , and somewhat more fuel-economical compared to the duke. Let us know what you go for. Ride safe.

Re: Used Duke 200 OR a new one?

Duke 200 resale value is low due to one more reason - the Duke 390.
Even many Duke 200 owners in our forum sold-off their machines and went for 390.

And you should be very careful when buying used performance oriented motorcycles, as the first owner would've abused it.
Also, it is good to buy from OLX/Quikr ads than from a seller.

I have had a bad experience of buying a used 150 cc bike, so buy only if you and your mechanic are very sure about the condition of the bike.

            @ joeantony, Ritwikgupte and SatSon

A big thanks to each one of you for your frank and helpful answers. I guess I'll wait, save up some more, and then purchase a new Duke 200 in a few months' time.

Besides your good answers, one of the major developments that coaxed me into this decision was that one of the used bikes that I was planning on purchasing got sold off on Saturday. AND guess what, the same bike's Ad (the numberplate was the same) was posted by the new seller on the same online AD website for a much lesser price on the same day.
Looks like the poor soul who bought it saw something so bad in it that he decided to sell it off asap. Phew! Thank God I didn't go in for that one.

Once again, thanks guys for taking the time to respond to this question. This forum is a really awesome place for info.

And that is exactly what I thought when it happened!
                Cheers, bro.

Watch out, there are almost no mechanic who can evaluate a Duke's condition accurately. It's not your average bike.

When your mech is trusted one then no questions should come to us actually. Because he is seeing it physically then us logically here.

Duke or any non average bike won't have a good resale coz India still running on daily commuter bikes. Duke is not a daily commuter bike, It's not a commuter but a premium bike.
It's on oneself what he prefers ? whether a P150 or daily or a Ninja 250 / CBR?

If you want a resale value then go with some 150 cc bike with good average, GS/UNICORN etc type. If you want power then you have to wait and watch the game. When there is right offer then sell ur Duke for correct price.

BTW third hand Duke would go for more bad price.

why don't you sell your P200 and take a bike loan for 4 years your emi for 1L would be close to 3-4 k/month.
In this way you will get a new bike and after four years it will be sold at correct satisfactory price against usage and years.

Your CC equation against loan was not good. coz it will make no difference if you wanna pay early and settle it, Where as in Bike loan through bank will have an option of preclosure.

                      Hi,

Rasta Peth is not a good place to buy a second hand bike. You can buy duke if available directly from owner and getting it tested by your mechanic. Rasta Peth guys are notoriously known for fiddling with inner components of bike and they wont lend you a ear even a minute after payment is made. So please stay away from them and try to find a direct owner and preferably a friend. You can join the Pune community and then try to find some duke owner as people can be more reliable in the community. Link to community thread...

Need not necessarily be the same bike. There was this guy who got my bike's picture from somewhere on the web, he posted it in a For Sale ad to sell his own Duke on OLX. And one of the results of his ad was that I started to get FB messages and calls from friends asking me when I'm going abroad and am I ready to negotiate with the price on offer to sell my bike?

I was dumbstruck and asked one of the guys where did he come across or who said that I was going abroad and selling my bike?? He told me that there was an ad on OLX with my bike's picture and that's where he assumed that I had left the bike in custody of some friend to get sold off as described in the ad.

I traced the ad, messaged OLX to take it down at once and they did so within a few hours. Many people use random pictures off the web to sell their bikes and so always see the bike in person.
