  • Person asking a xhpian for 1st bike, for commuting. so help me to select 1 for him.

I own a D 390 now and am very happy with it. My friend, aged 24 needs a bike. It will be his first bike, though at home his dad has a Tvs XL. So after making him understand biking and all things, I gave him some factors to rate, as he wished.
Im typing the factors in ascending order as he prioritises them...

    He needs
    1. Handling and braking
    2. Mileage ( above 50 km/lt )
    3. Comfort ( Maximum occasional highway ride of 80 kms )
    4. Power ( 100 cc, 125 cc, 135 cc )
    5. Style
    6. Price ( less than Rs 65000 )
    7. Brand

I could only give these many factors for him to think, sorry if I left out any. I think its Yamaha SS 125 cc, that suits. I stick to less than 150 cc bikes as mileage is of more priority to him.
Kindly see the priorities and suggest best he can buy. He intends to keep the bike for atleast 5 years. I have already made a deal that, he ought to buy a good helmet and shoes with bike and only then I would select bike for you...
    Thanks.

My suggestion would be the Ignitor from Hero.

      +ves

      1. Style : a 24 year old should be loving something trendy looks.
      2. Budget : the disc version fits exactly to his budget.
      3. FE : most of the owners vouch 50 when driven sanely.
      4. Reliability : Engine from Honda technology.
      5. SVC : One of the best networks you can get.

      -ves
      1. FE at high speeds : some owners have reported very low FE if driven roughly.

      I would also consider P135.
Its crime to ride a car alone, so I ride bike :).

Hero igniter? mahindra centuro? well, i was thinking nothing below yamaha or honda. igniter only got honda technology, isnt? have ridden the new passion plus pro from hero. quality is relatively low.

If he wants a Honda Honda than a Hero Honda .. then Shine should do. On the other hand Yamaha's sub 150 category has not gotten great reception.

Its not him, its me... One thing down with Hero is bad gear shifts...

The budget seems to be little restrictive for the features he is asking for, but here in Assam bikes cost way more than other places. Get him a Shine and call it a day, or if it is style he is after, get him a P135, but then the budget will have to be extended a little bit.

i have owned yamaha crux in past... was a sweet one. loved revs... P135 is a bit out of budget. lets stick to the above factors and limits for now... hero ignitor is okay as its of course a VFM, but the quality is doubted...

If it is to be a Honda for a young guy under 65k.. I would suggest Honda CB Stunner.

It has trendy looks, good mileage, nice handling.

Stunner is 71k on road here. Apart from that, it's a good bike but comes with AC headlight.

The two options that seem to meet most of his requirements are Yamaha SS125 and Honda Shine. I really like SS125 but wouldn't want to suggest it due to its low sales which might result in lack of availability of spares in the future.

Honda shine on the other hand lacks the style factor but ticks most of the boxes. So my vote goes for Honda Shine. (PS: Discover 125 ST would also be a good option if your friend is not very specific about brands)

i think there is only 1-2 k difference between honda shine and yamaha ss... but from the list , handling and braking is better in SS 125... isnt? both are equal in mileage and price...

Discover 125ST: for good overall package, much refined engine, economical running.
                            Or
Honda Shine: for superior reliability, refinement and build quality. Expensive to maintain.

But unless you don't maintain well then quality, refinement is of no use.

Discover 125ST. Unless he wants to drive above 80 kmph little vibrations after that speed. But very good bike for 125 CC. If I would have been buying a 125 cc instead of 150, Discover 125ST would be the only bike I would go for. You should definitely have a look at this bike.
