  • Bike in 150cc Category

    Dear XBHPians,

I am looking to buy a bike in 150cc category. My criterion are:

    1. Should have a descent mileage, around 45 kmpl. (More the better)
    2. The maintenance costs should not be too high.
    3. I am interested to use the bike for atleast 5-6 years.

Certain other details which I would like to share:

1.The bike would be primarily used in city conditions.
    2. My budget is under 85K.
    3. The bike is supposed to be kept in storage for a week or so at times. So, a kick start lever will always be an added amenity.

I have particularly zeroed on Bajaj Pulsar 150. I have ridden the other two bikes in this category i.e Yamaha Fz16 and Honda Trigger. Honestly, I didn't like the sitting position and the console of trigger. Yamaha fz16 is good in every sense, but what worries me is its low mileage figure. Also, my friend who owns a fz16 ('09 Model) always complains about the issue of bent rims.

So, my question to all Pulsar 150/Fz 16 2013 model owners : Do the problems of bent rims still exist in new models? Is there any improvement in mileage over the older models? If Yes, what figures you get?

What about Pulsar 2013 model (Chrome gearbox) over older model (all black). Any improvement in terms of mileage? power? etc.

    All suggestions are welcome.

Not so sure about durability about p150 for 6 years, may be proper maintenance will ensure that. Other choices are yamaha FZ-s or SZ-r, suzuki GS 150 and Hero Impulse.

Never heard of bent rim issues from my pals on FZ-S. I would vote FZ-S top. If you are looking for slightly improved mileage go for SZ-r. With the GS 150 you will feel more refined and relaxed ride, not sure about FE there. I added the impulse coz I own one , but surely it also fits all your criterion. Impulse is durable and FE around 45 if ridden sanely in city, but its gear box is having some issues .. thats the -ve there. Good luck with your new bike, cheers.
Its crime to ride a car alone, so I ride bike :).

Pulsar hasn't been modified in recent times and AFAIK there is no difference in engine of the 2013 model and previous model, except the paint scheme.

GS150 owners claim FE of more than 50 kmpl in city. Almost all of them get it I think. It is a nice machine with very good ride quality and refined engine.
What is the issue you're facing with Impulse's gearbox?

I own a 2013 July model fz16 ....no issues of bent rims and yes the mileage is increased a bit compared to older one ones.

I'm inclined towards a commuter/family bike. Unfortunately, Impulse doesn't fit here.
Unlike Bajaj, Yamaha, Honda & TVS, Suzuki doesn't have an SVC in our area. Also, I've learned that Suzuki's parts are comparatively expensive & difficult to get in the after market. Wonder why I don't see many Suzuki's around! SZ-r could be considered.

False neutrals started appearing after an year of driving, I ride a bit rough though . Also sometime it will be hard to apply a gear position (mostly downwards), you need to release clutch and/or accelerate a bit and try again . But, I feel its a very minor issue when compared to issues some other sports bike bring to their owners. Otherwise its cool bike to ride around.

True, for a very good bike like GS150, the numbers you see in the road is un-matching, reasons could the the ones you shared. You can also TD the unicorn, nothing like it when it come to commuter bikes with a peppy mill.

I used to ride P150 '12 model, and I don't know if you'll believe it, but I got a mileage in the 50s Km/pl It's true actually. my friend who bought it 6 months before I did got the same mileage more or less. So, I believe the mileage has improved.

P150 is the most preferable if you are looking for city conditions with decent mileage. My friend's p150 yields an FE of 52kmpl. Whereas another friend of mine owns a p150 07 model. He complaints of vibrations over 80 kmph and his engine oil lasts only to 1200 kms

Try cbr150 or Yamaha r15 ,these are best in 150 cc segment

Look at FZ also. Really good bike, low maintenance and reliable performer. The newer models have better mileage figures and members are getting 40+ with sane riding. The pillion comfort is also good on them.
rev any bike hard, you won't get good FE.
The fz-s i think comes for ₹80k something.

These are ₹1L+ bikes and TS has mentions his budget to ₹85K.

Past one month I have been searching for best bike for myself. As I am in Bangalore and SVC for Suzuki is available I am buying a GS150R in next months salary. If not GS150R I would go with the upcoming new CBZ(2014) to be launched.
