  • First bike for a big guy

    Hello!

I'm Shashank. I'm 20 and currently college going. It is about 30 kilometers from my home, so I would be traveling at least 60km every day, if not more. This would be my bike. My priorities are, in order of importance, as follows :

    Comfort
    Reliability
    Mileage
    Looks
    Re-sale value

    I'm 6'3" tall and weigh 90kg.

    My budget is 50-70k.

Most of my riding would be on a congested Highway and city routes. I'd probably go for long rides outside the city on weekends.

I am currently on the lookout for 150cc bikes. Please state your reasons if you would be suggesting bikes having lower or higher displacements as I am open to all suggestions.

PS : My friend suggested the FZ16. I like the way it looks, but I'm not sure whether it will be comfortable enough for me. Do please leave a suggestion!

    Cheers!

    Query approved!

BTW, newer FZs have been de-tuned for mileage! Highway runs may not be as fun as earlier.

The FZ has a comfortable seat and should do the job for you. The bike has decent resale value and is also reliable. Main cons of FZ are its poor fuel efficiency and yamaha's pathetic service. The bike yields about 40kmpl of mileage. On-road the bike should cost close to 80k. If that's ok go for it. Well this is all about the outgoing model. The new 2014 FZ will have fuel injection so fuel efficiency will be better but like Divya has mentioned the bike has been detuned to 13.1 PS from 14 PS.

Other options are the Hero Xtreme(2014)/Hunk and the Honda Dazzler. Both have the same engine, are smooth, punchy and yield 45-55kmpl. Honda spares tend to be costlier and service is poor in many places. Lucky you if you have a good service centre for honda. Hero's service is decent generally everywhere and spares should be relatively cheaper. Anyways both bikes are fantastic commuters that appeal youngsters also. Both bikes have good resale value.

Suzuki GS150R is also a great product. If you have a good suzuki service centre look no further. The bike is comfortable, smooth, has decent power and returns 50-55kmpl or even more. The best part is the bike has very good build quality. With a 6th cog highway cruising is a bliss. I have no idea on its resale value.

Test ride all the bikes and decide!

If your budget is 70k max, there r only two options. Hero Achiever and Yamahaa sz-R. Good bikes, but not lookers. If you can raise your budget upto 80k, get a Hero Xtreme. Good combo of comfort and mileage.

Re: First bike for a big guy

You wont get a 150cc machine with a 70K budget, the only 150 cc available under around 70k are Hero Achiever and Yamaha sz-R.
Most of the 150cc bikes start from 77k to 85k (add a few grands more if you like the Fazer). So you need to stretch your budget a bit.
Hero Xtreme is a fresh new option, Suzuki GS150R is another good bike.

Yamaha SZ-R it is. It is the best suitable bike for your budget and all your needs. It has received good reviews. Please test drive this and I think you will like it.

Re: First bike for a big guy

Yamaha SZ RR suits your bill perfectly. Else, within your budget, you can try P135 and SS125. Both of them are not 150ccs but are more powerful than the cc suggests. On a 'congested' highway and within city, you'll hardly feel the difference of power. Both the machines can do 80+ kmph without much ado and long rides are fun as well. The P135 will have more power than the SS but the SS will have more comfort and smoothness. With the spare money, buy some good riding gears.

My suggestion: same as Krishna77. But only grouse is, SS doesn't have good resale. You can also consider Yam SZ/Pulsar 150. Test Ride.......

From 150cc bike u can have a look on hero extreme, hunk( i m not sure is it discontinued or not), pulsar 150 or 180.., though i m using honda stunner but seat are too stiff.. And butt become sore just while driving of 1hrs, no matter wht u do stiffness is really a big problem, News of discontinued also here. Extend ur budget if u can.... Fz16 is a good bike with a refined engine. But if you want absolute reliability with comfort. I suggest Honda unicorn and trigger (a bit less comfy but reliable) both bikes are tried and tested and awesome on the mileage front (55kmpl). I have owned unicorn for almost eight years now and I have no complaints and the resale is decent too.

Unicorn is the best according to your needs. Its can accommodate a tall guy without any qualms. It has a great reputation for its bullet proof engine and reliability, gives you around 50kmpl, comfortable for long rides and is also having good resale value. All u need is to look out for a good service centre. And after your free services are over you can get it serviced through a local mechanic of your choice thereby escaping the hassles of honda after sales. Spares are readily available. Also u can check out Suzuki GS150. Few of my friends have it. Even though they don't upkeep their bikes well, it is still serving them without any issues. It is also a capable machine and it suits tall riders better. Resale of GS150 is comparatively poorer when compared to unicorn or fz. TD both the bikes and a few others which u have shortlisted. Select which u feel is the best for u.

                            Goodluck
