  • KTM Duke 200 or Suzuki gixxer for beginner.

    Hello,

i am a beginner and i have short listed the following two bikes, ktm duke 200 and the suzuki gixxer.

i would use it inside the city and suburbs within the radius of around 30 - 40 km.

i have ridden a honda cbr250r for 12km and found no nervousness in doing 65-70kmph in the open stretches of the city.

my friends who own duke are all possessive and they do not let even the other duke owners to ride their duke. they are all beginners riding duke and the only thing they warn is the maintenance and care for the bike like a baby's.

with this background i approached a KTM showroom and they said they ll let me ride if i book a bike. So should i consider booking one? and i want to know all the practical problems with the bike. also if it ll be good experience for a beginner since i dont want a regretful first bike experience. i am considering duke as i feel i would be more conscious about the road and others around me while riding a higher powered bike than the gixxer. if i should choose gixxer over duke for my first bike, please mention why?

cost will not be a problem as with duke. if its not worth even test riding a duke after booking then i would not even consider it and directly go for gixxer as my first bike.

    Thanks.

Gixxer at the end of day is a 150cc air cooled bike, though good in its class, cant be compared to a 200cc liquid cooled 25bhp bike.

Duke is like a andry dog, and will bite you if you cant tame it properly.reaches 120 just like that and progress is bit slower later, till indicated 135-138kmph, and thats pretty fast for a beginner.
But then, the handling is something class apart, you will learn a lot of things on this bike which will help you in later bigger upgrades. As mentioned above duke requires tlc, take care of her and she'll reward you.

          .

          Thanks.
Among the two its the Duke .
Especially when you have CBR and other dukes in the same gang .
A gixxer takes almost 2x Time to hit 100 than a Duke .
And anything under 250cc can be easily mastered just it takes few days of training.

If the choice is wide then test ride a 200NS too.

Of the two bikes it's definitely Duke but since it's your first bike I would suggest you to go for the gixxer. If you think you can control the urge to twist the throttle before you know how to handle the 25 horses you can go for Duke. But imo gixxer is best suited given its a first bike. Happy biking

I would suggest you gixxer since its your first bike you will learn gradually and then you can graduate to higher cc bikes more confidently. And gixxer is pretty decent bike to ride in city. You can also consider apache 180 & new zma also. Also test ride of dukes is possible without booking the bike atleast in my city.

i planned to take one of my duker friend's bike next week. making arrangements to book one as well. but if i dont feel at home, should i give it sometime and then buy duke later? my heart still stays on duke whatever be the problem :/

                  ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

moreover people who are funding me for the bike, my parents say that if i happen to relocate after a year, the bike would go waste and there will be a huge difference in buying cost and resale value. will this affectto a large extent and something that i should consider when buying my first bike? its difficult to make a choice between heart and mind.

First of all, do you have a license? If you do, the showroom cannot force you into booking just to give a test ride. Escalate the matter to KTM if that's the case.

The 200 Duke is a brilliant bike for a beginner, especially if he/she has plans to move to bigger bikes in the future. Do maintain the essential safety guidelines, whichever bike you go for.

yes sir, since ktm showroom is far away from my place i asked one of my friends to bring the bike to home next week. but he is having academic works and since being sunday, he got the bike home today itself. its raining pretty well here and i took a ride on the bike. i felt it so easy to steer the bike and the bike didnt skid in wet too. only one thing i felt bad is that my knees felt tight under the recessed tank and it kept hitting the plastic whenever i went on a pothole or bump. also i was riding the bike normally and my friend asked me to check the speedo. to my surprise i found that i kept revving it hard :O it was super smooth and i didnt feel it revving hard. he was also graceful to explain all the practical problems he faced with the showroom ppl and maintenance aspects of the bike. another thing i felt bad as a beginner is the frequent gear shifts. thrice i left the bike turn off without changing proper gears when braking hard. i feel this very uncomfortable in the traffic. now i have only one thing left to ride a gixxer and see which feels better. keeping in mind about the cost and other things, i feel i can save a lot of money and spend it on my other wants too. one thing is for sure. duke 200 is a good beginner bike whatsoever

Take the test rides of the short listed bikes, before taking any major decision.

A 5 minutes test ride will tell you more about a bike than a month of reading about it online. The sound of the engine, the bite of the brakes, the smoothness of the gearshifts, the maneuverability of the bike in real life traffic are among many things that only a test ride will tell you.

As for the beginner, go easy for the first thousand kms and progress as you gain experience on your ride.

And for the maintenance part, you have to take care of your ride, no matter which one you buy.

SO if money is no concern, go for duke, else gixxer.
                        Choose wisely.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.
