  • Which bike to buy?

    Hi guys,

I own a Yamaha SZR 1st gen(not the SZRR) from 2012. However it seems I am facing a mid life crisis at the moment. The SZR is a nice bike but it seems to loose out on all energy post 60kmph. Few days back I drove at 8okmph for a stretch of 60kms and it guzzled up 4 liters of petrol..!!! Even in the ghat roads it seems that it is unable to pull up with me and a pillion even on the 2nd gear. So I have decided to sell of my SZR and get a new bike. I am eventually looking for a bike in 150-200cc category but cannot get my decision fixed on anything.

    Things I am looking for
    1. Mileage(atleast 45- 50) maybe compromise a bit on it if the cc goes up since I have lived with the SZR giving me 30-34 kmpl
    2. Comfort(SZR feels comfortable to drive as well as for pillion)
    3. Control(reason why I chose SZR).
    4. Performance(good low end and mid range torque, a also 50-50 city/highway driving). I tend to take long strolls on weekends around Pune.

Fairing is a strict no no. Naked looks are better.
Few bikes I have thought about but none satiate my hunger.

    1. Suzuki GS150R or Gixxer as well
    2. Hero Xtreme
    3. Apache RTR 180
    4. Pulsar 200NS
    5. Last Option Honda CBR 250

Please help me choose. Also feel free to let more options on the bikes as well. Thanks in advance..!!!

Since you don't like a fairing and want something punchy therefore 3 and 4 seem the most appropriate for you.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Thanks Monk. However as some of the users pointed out. Apaches are prone to vibes above 80kmph. and is Pulsar 200NS a good option? I mean I have heard from some people that bajaj engines and parts are quite poor. What I like is what GS150R offers but since I have been driving around a 150cc I would want to keep that as the last option.

      Please help.

Low end torque of 200ns is nothing great. It comes to life only after 4k rpm which makes riding in traffic a bit difficult. Therefore for city/traffic apache will be better due to better low end torque. But the apache motor feels stressed at 100-110 as it is already doing 8k rpm odd at around 100-105 on the speedo though it can do 130kmph (speedo indicated). This is where the 200ns is a better option and you also get liquid cooling along with more power and greater top speed (don't know about the quality of 200ns though). If you are ready to rev up a little and ride in traffic then go for 200ns as it is the most value for money bike in your list.

Take whatever others (including us) say with a pinch of salt and as a pointer to keep in mind during the TR. The vibes in RTRs and Bajaj's rough engines are blown out of proportion on xBhp.
Take Test Rides of all bikes you like and you'll get to know which bike vibrates and which is rough.

if you can spend about 95K on a new bike, go for 200NS.
if your budget is about 80-82k, go for gixxer.

Check out the new karizma too. It will satisfy all your needs and will also fits your budget.
Take test rides of all the shortlisted bikes and then make an informed decision.
              All the best.

                Re: Which bike to buy?

I am not comparing CBR250 as you said yourself you don't want a faired bike.

Best in your list is 200NS, just coz its from Bajaj doesn't mean its a crappy engine.
2nd is Apache 180, the vibes in RTR180 are very less compared to RTR160. Better get the ABS version.
Can give Gixxer a try, it is new in market but has got some yummy reviews. I love the looks personally.

                  Ranking.
                  1. Cbr250 .
                  2 200ns
                  3. Rtr180 .
That's it .remove other bike's from it .
Because you already have the " supermsmooth" yamaha 150cc ,still you're crying for power .. that means fz, gixxer, etc are totally out of race .do not consider them as if you did ,you'll cry again in 6 months
                  Simply ...
If you have above 1 lakh ₹ ,then look for ..
                  1. Duke200.
                  2. Cbr 250
                  3 Rc200 (list isn't ranked ) .
                  If you have below 1L ₹ .
P200ns .that's it .ask any rational mind a question ,which is the best bike below 1L ₹ .you will get your answer.
                  Do test ride.

                      Re: Which bike to buy?

You could TD the Gixxer. It's currently the most powered 150cc around, plus really good handling too. But in case you're looking for more power on tap, the 200ns is the logical option. Now regarding bajaj's products, it's not like they're unreliable or anything. It's just that they are high maintenance (meaning the bike has to be pampered with personal attention and maintenance). From my experience, the pulsar 220 is a really capable commuter as well as a tourer, and in terms of mileage gives you a little bit more than your SZR. THe 200ns is also a great product and a vfm, with inputs from ktm. It just hasn't been im the market for long enough, and hence isn't a tried and tested product, nonetheless, a great addition to the pulsar stable! So do test ride all possible options and round up the vehicle that suits you best! The mind and the heart will always be in constant conflict over these matters 😊 All the best for your search!

Frankly, to me fz feelsOnly a little bit good than a scooter.

                          +1 for that.
FZ 2.0 is a very good option which you can consider. A little low on power but makes up with quality, handling(you know it already I guess after riding an Yamaha) and FI.
You can also check out the Karizma. Mileage will be a little low as per your expectation but good low and mid range torque makes up for that. Also, comfortable for both rider and pillion.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

TD the GS and Gixxer. Felt the GS to be better of the two, total uber smooth. Waiting to get my hands on NS for a test ride. Also TVS is launching some new bike this January based on the Draken concept. Should I wait?
