  • Bike for City & Highway ride - Bangalore

    Hi,

I need a no nonsense bike which is powerful enough to face both, city as well as highway ride.
I am 5 ft 4 in and weigh around 50 kgs who stays 30kms away from work place.
    So it will be a 60kms ride 7 days a week (420kms / week)

This will be my first bike..
Have been driving Activa from the age of 17 and scooty Streak recently since no one uses it at home.

Requirements of the bike are as follows -

    Budget - 2,00,000 Rs
    Cc - 150 - 250
Looks - Should be an eye candy on road
Top speed - must be able to reach 140 to 150 km/hr
    Mileage - 40kmpl in City ( Minimum )
Pillion seat - Not a priority since I will B riding solo most of the time
Usage - 50% Highway and 50% city (Bangalore)

The bike will be with me for atleast 5 years ( 60kms * 5yrs = .108000 kms ) plus I will also be doing a 300 kms trip once in 3 months.
So need a bike which will not make a dent in my life.
I know I am being too calculative, choosy and specific, but I like it this way.

I have done a bit of research on this site after which the bikes under radar ->

    Duke 200 & 390 =
    For -
    Exclusive, Looks, Price, Sheer Power
    Against -
Mileage, Not Stable on highways at higher speed

    Honda CBR 150 & CBR 250 =
    For -
    Looks, Mileage
    Against -
After Service, Build Quality, Outdated Console, Price, Weight

    Pulsar 180 & 220 =
    For -
After Service, Build Quality, Looks, Mileage, Pricing
    Against -
Going to be replaced soon with newer siblings

    Yamaha R15 V2.0 =
    For -
    Build Quality, Exclusive, Looks
    Against -
    Back breaking position, Mileage, Price

But none of them give mileage of 40kmpl except for pulsar 180 & 220 which are going to be outdated soon and can be seen a lot on Bangalore roads.

Does anyone have any others bikes in mind?
Need expert advice on the same.
1st hand experience would be a boon.

CBR250R would be my first preference in and around that budget. It is too good a bike to be rejected for Pathetic Honda A.S.S..
Enfields should get a look in particularly the Thunderbirds. Comfort is something u'll get in plenty there, but maintenance might become a headache.
Dukes will fulfill all your criteria depending on your riding style if you intend to do 100 all the time and dont mind the mileage. Roads in our country are not designed for speeds higher than that.
If you intend to go for Bajaj, Please also take a look at the NS. I have owned it for around 2.5 years now and it still brings a huge grin on my face every single time. It'll also pass your mileage criteria comfortably.
Both R15 and KTM RC's are gem of a bike but have a very sporty riding stance which if you are comfortable with, will fulfill your requirements perfectly. Mileage might also be an issue here.

Main problem might be your height. So also take a look at avenger as the last resort.
Do the test drives properly before deciding. Also, please take a look at the hero products once.

      Hope this helps.

        Hi,
If you can sacrifice mileage then d390 and CBR250 fits perfect in your budget and requirements. CBR 250 is tried and tested tourer ( you have to ignore ASC part ) whereas d390 is a powerful beast which can do 130 kmph all day easily but mileage is around 28 kmpl and being naked you will face wind blast post 140 kmph but at the end of the day its a fun machine to ride. I would suggest you to test ride both of them and then choose.

D 200 fits your requirements, well almost all of them.
And the speeds at which the D200 is not stable at, the roads here are also not for those speeds as well. Its very stable at higher speeds and the best out there as per your requirements!

If you still want to look any further, have a look at the 200 NS.

In addition to the above bikes, do checkout the new 2014 karizma zmr. Full fills almost all your requirements except maybe top speed. It is fuel injected, oil cooled, fully faired so good highway stability and comes with Hero reliability.
The only problem is that to some people, it looks ugly in photos, so do go and see it in flesh. I believe it looks better in reality than pics.

                Hi ,
even I am planning to have a new bike. In tht range I can see NS 200 is d best option.
But i got the online reviews issues are like

                1. engine vibration. Vibrations at even 50 kmph next band is 80 kmph and later it's too much, service center says it's normal on all pulsars.
                2. braking issue such as noise during brake and also in brake drums, Rear brake oil cylinder leakage, replaced free of cost, but again there is leakage.
                3. engine heats up in short travels and
                4. sound of the engine.
                5. Back tyre skids much in normal speed of 50-70
6.The bike sways leftwards and you need to put effort to hold it straight, never this case in any bike, service centre says it's normal on Pulsars.
7.Clutch is very hard, it's ON or OFF, it's not progressive, b'cos of this you have to play on gear shifting often the gear sticks or the RPM raises very high.

                My requirement is :

                1. In Bangalore normal day-day travel .
                2. Weekends occasionally long tours and max time alone.
                3. Mileage should be reasonable as I travel from BTM to marathalli max time so in traffic it should not show less mileage.
                4. Pillion should be OK. person should be able to sit. So one side seating not possible at all that am sure.

                Range:
                1 lakh MAX

Now I have a Passion so i don't have any idea regarding ths high range bikes.
Can you guys please help else I will get a Unicorn which is d reliable low range bike as i cant increase my range also I dont like Yamaha. Also I dont like the heavy plastic bikes such CBR 150 or upcoming SS 200.....

                Please help.

P200NS the perfect bike at 1 Lakh. The issues you mentioned above, are not serious. You can easily sort them/ live with it. Take test ride for atleast 3-4 Kms. Also Consider FZ. Its a damn good bike and easy on pocket aswell. But you will loose in power. Test ride and decide.

Re: Bike for City & Highway ride - Bangalore

                    That was a great advice.
I will think about including the NS in my list but I think more people are buying it, so the exclusive tag which it had has reduced.
Every 4th or 5th Bike on road turns out to be NS.
The main reason for not buying CBR250 is its weight.

                    ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

I had duke 390 in mind but there is not much of a difference in terms of looks when compared to its younger sibling.
                    so dropped the idea.
Have to agree that Duke 390 is A VFM for the price it can be bought.

                    ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

I really loved Duke at 1st sight.
It seemed to be the bike I wanted in my garage but the mileage part put it down.
It barely gives 25 to 30

                    ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

I agree with you about the looks.
Hero could have used some help there.
I personally love the older Hero Honda Karizma.
The only reason why I have not taken that into consideration is because of my height

                    ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

                    Sure buddy.
This is where I wIll be posting my reviews about my bike first.
Regarding the on-road price, there might be small difference from dealer to dealer.
I will keep you posted on that.
Regarding NS, I am planning to add that to my list of test rides I will be having.

                      ...
                      1. Not much,if parts are screwed perfectly .basically, it's not as much as in rtrs, neither too low as in yamahas. Its somewhere in Aberdeen with a little bit like yammys.
                      2. Brake drums .. ? Ehh dude it's a all disc bike .and disc produces screech only when it's got dust inside pads .every bike has to deal with it .even new gixxer is having this problem,
After 100kms, it settles .the last time my disc produced noise was when my odo was 400kms. Now it stands at 7000kms, not a single whisper .
                      3. Nope ,it's not engine heat ,it's the radiator working that blows of excess engine heat towards your thigh/legs .happens with even D390. but only when you ride in bumper to bumper traffic for like 20-30 min.
                      4.what ..?
                      5. Used to happen with euroslips. Now New ns comes with mrf tyres .
                      6. Mine does ,dunno why...

P200NS is a fine choice as already mentioned by others.
Apart from that, you can check out the Karizma and Apache180(ABS). Both are proven enough in India but you may have slightly less FE than your requirements. But, the top speed you are looking for does not go hand in hand with the expected FE. CBR250(ABS) can do that and is very stable. Do consider that as well.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Re: Bike for City & Highway ride - Bangalore

                          I have pulsar 200ns.
1.I am not facing vibration problem in my bike but when you try to increase throttle slowly than it vibrate otherwise no vibration till the top end.

2.Yes the Bike goes to left when it is new but now it is little bit did.

3.rear tyre slips due to the Euroslips tyres changed it to the mrf see the magic the bike become more stable at high speed due to the soft compound rubber.

4.it will give you overall more than 35+ kmpl.

                          Otherwise get the CBR 250

Exactly. The vibrations are mostly in specific RPM ranges. Mine vibrates at 5-6k in 6th but above it, there isnt any.
This I can gaurantee as i rode my bike without one of the screws in legguard for 2 months and the noise used to come in that specific rpm range only.
And the keyword as always is maintenance. Maintain it properly and no problem will occur.

                              So it will be a 60kms ride 7 days a week (420kms / week)

Top speed - must be able to reach 140 to 150 km/hr
                              Mileage - 40kmpl in City ( Minimum )

You want a bike which can do 150 kph and expect 40 kmpl. Sorry dude that's not possible.

Still for your height, Apache 180 ABS suits perfect as it can do 130 kph while returning 38-40 kmpl too.

Otherwise 200NS is good bike, but it's meant for taller people.

Still in a budget of 2 lacs, you can get Duke 390 or CBR250 if you forget about mileage.
