  • First time rider, love the Fazer, budget not much of a constraint

    Hi everyone.

This is my first post here and I need some advice regrading a planned bike purchase about 6-8 months from now.

I am of light build ~58kg, 173cm tall and though I can ride a bicycle anyway I choose, this would be my first powered two wheeler - I have never driven even a gearless scooter before.

My budget has a cap of 1 lakh but oviously I'd prefer it as cheap as possible. That being said I am not opposed to stretching it by another 10k if that'd provide me with some really nice value.

I have read through numberous threads here and elsewhere and read up on a number of reviews and have eyed the Fazer. I am aware of the fact that its priced significantly higher than its peers and lacks a bit in the power department but since it fits well inside my budget (including the riding gear) and I am not the kind that really likes to race or speed (I think not, but I have never ridden a bike before so cant be 100% sure) I think it would be a good choice.

I'd use it for commute 10+10 km bothways and for running about in the city for weekends (I'd guess anywhere from 60 to 120 km over the two days). I am a bit travel headed and so, the bike is invariably going to be used for moderate to log journeys once is a while - so the touring aspect is important - think 100-350 km total rides (maybe even more, not sure)

Fuel efficiency is not much of a concern, but since I expect to roam around a bit I am looking for something above 35kmpl. I will generally ride with pillion, so while its important to have a good rear seat, its not a decison changer by any means.

I have reasearched on the following and will note down what I think of these:
    1. P220 : Fast, powerful, not very refined but cheap spares. Every other guy owns one.
    2. P200NS : Fast, nimble but looks are a too aggressive for my liking. I am not much of a show off guy and dont really care about the top speed or acceleration.
    3. Apache 180 : Heard people complain of vibrations - big put off. Rocket like in handling through traffic.
    4. FZ : Like everything except the naked head.
    5. Fazer : Like the looks. Its a middle of the road bike, but seems to have everything I want in just the right proportion.

I'd like your take on my choice. Please do tell me if I have made some stupid choices going for the looks of the Fazer.

PS: While I am very comfortable riding a cycle, I was never at ease with a pillion on it. I used to have pretty serious trouble with the steering being far too sensitive and I can remember taking friends on the pillion only like 2-3 times that too for something like 200-300 metres and pretty wobbly all through that distance. This is partly due to the fact that I am pretty light - 58kg last checked. How much of a trouble would this be on a bike - has anybody got any experiences in this regard ?

Also do keep in mind that I will be learning on this same bike. I will get a friend to get it home for me and then learn it before taking it out to the traffic.

    Thanks

Why don't you keep a Pulsar 180 in your list? It should blend with your wish list... You can use her daily in city without any hassle... You can use it for touring.... It is a perfect blend of a daily commuter and weekend stress buster...Not to forget, it is a total Value for Money bike...The only thing you need to install is an Osram Night breaker head bulb and then you can do 70-100 KM/hr easily at night... Since you are 173cm tall, you can put both your feet down at a time and this would assist you while learning.... The seats are OK but you can always change them according to your needs... You will easily get 40-43~45 KM per litre but that depends upon your riding style too... The acceleration and top speed department is very much acceptable ( 120-125KM/hr would be more than enough for you).. This should fall in your budget too.

Spares are easily available, almost any mechanic can repair the Pulsar 180, For a list of good Bajaj SVCs you can always ask xBhPians from Bangalore..

However, I would strictly recommend you to learn riding on any other bike/ gearless scooter so that you become familier with the ABC of a two wheeler... Once you are comfortable riding a two wheeler, go out for test rides of different bikes.. Who knows you may end up with a ThunderBird or a D390?

All is well but the question is how long till the next bike?! Will you be happy and content with the Fazer long enough? - I am talking about the power alone. Both, FZ & Fazer are flawless bikes to begin biking with - stable, reliable, smooth etc. Fazer will definitely have an edge in case of highway riding.

Re: First time rider, love the Fazer, budget not much of a constraint

i would suggest you to go ahead with the Fazer.. its a really nice machine.. good riding position, smooth engine and an overall good stability..
since this is going to be your first bike, then don't think about future proofing.. it will take a few years for to get enough experience to move onto higher cc bikes..
i also own FZ and so does the above rider, so we can say that Fz/Fazer won't be too hard for you and would give you good feedback..
mileage is also ok ok.. 35-40 km/L if ridden in a proper manner..

          Ride safe and have fun.

Very rarely people come with a definitive idea about their purchase and you seem to be one.
I will suggest you buy the Fazer or FZ, though I like the latter more. On highways maybe Fazer is better due to the fairings. Other than that everything is same and if you buy FZ, you can keep the price a little more on the lower side.
I am 165 cms and merely 53 kgs, I had this problem with pillion, as most of the time the pillion is heavier than me. It can affect the balance a little but in the due course of time you won't mind it.
FZ or Fazer is a good bike to start with, have excellent control. Its a good choice.

Nice to see someone having clarity of what bike he wants. You can go for it eyes closed. Its a good learner's machine. Very forgiving. I learnt handling the bike in mad city traffic on a Karizma, so I'm sure Fazer would live up to your expectations.

Yes, P180 is also on my list as my mind is not made up. I forgot to add it. The issue here is a rather high maintenance that people seem to complain about (relative to the others) and the fact that everybisy seems to own one. I am not much of a show off, but feel that the indivduality is lost. That being said its not out of the list by any means. BTW, isnt the seating position and handling a bit more comfortable on the Fazer ?

My worry is that I know next to nothing about bikes except what I read online and hear from friends. I surely wouldnt be willing to lug it from mechanic to mechanic if I should, god forbid, hit issues. But then again like you pointed out, every mechanic seems to know his way around the pulsars much like the Hero Hondas.

I will take a better look at the P180.

I think I am not very speed/power minded. The upgrade would possibly come over time, but then I'm not sure if that will be from the ranks of a sports-like bike or tourer-like bike. So If I should ever feel the need for it in say a couple of years' time I am open to an appropriate upgrade - just that right now, having never ridden a bike before I am not quite convinced of whether or not I'll crave for more power. But I am the kind of guy that fusses over the little things - usability and fuss free nature of getting things done

                1. Even when I game I have distinct likes to the handling of certain cars as compared to some others whereas I wouldnt really care much about top speed (not sure how appropriate of an example it is)
                2. Hate the single light only mode of the Fazer more than the fact that its expensive :|
                3. Own a Windows Phone despite knowing full well how powerful the Androids are; just couldnt stand the lag and maintenance it asked for from the user. (Again, not sure if that means anything at all here)

I used to note in bus/cab rides how fast the speeds feel. I think I will be a fairly happy chap at 90, and apparently the Fazer does very well up until 90-95. I am simply not of the kind that would push the throttle a bit more just to see the three digits. For all I care I could be in the 80s and still be happy as long as the bike doesnt give me any reason to worry about it. But being an absolute noob the needs may change over time and I understand that I may even end up with a 250CBR or the Thunderbird sometime in the future, but right now I just dont wish to take that risk to myself or the bike. For the same reasons the R15 is out - I cant test drive to get a feel for these bikes when I dont even know how to ride one

Thanks for the kind comments @rxdude and @Divya Sharan. Like I said, I am a rather fussy guy, so wouldnt like to jump to a decision only to regret it later. So I had to research.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies, really appriciate it though my purchase is atleast half a year away.

I'd also like to know the comparison between the P220 and the Fazer's headlamps. I have seen the Pulsars headlight in action and its glorius. Havent seen the fazer, but the one-eye syndrome makes it a weaker bet. How bad is it in comparison ?

I'd also like some suggestions for a Helmet and riding gear. I'd put the combined budget at ~15k at the moment.

Regarding Helmets, I like the ones that have the whole front movable - like it helps drink or eat something. And I'd prefer them to be matte black (if it wouldnt be an issue in the Bangalore summer for 3 hr rides)

You can go with either Fazer or FZ - with eyes closed. Both are from YAMAHA - so, quality and performance is not a problem. And you have done your research pretty well. So, there is no point misleading you about numerous bikes of the same category. Fazer will be a little heavy. This heaviness is definitely a boon for the highways and a little problematic for city. Still visit the showroom, sit on one and decide yourself. Buy any YAMAHA bike and you'll never regret!

You have made everything clearer by this moment. Hands down, go for the FAZER. You'll not regret! Like I said before, this is one bike in 150cc category that you'll not regret owning. The reliability is top-notch. The one-eyed headlamp cannot be avoided - any bike with dual ones, for that matter, will have this syndrome. The P220 headlamp is HID with projector and it is one of the strongest stock headlamp in an Indian bike. So, honestly there is no comparison but don't you worry, there are plenty of aftermarket options for the Fazer and being dual, the beauty is undeniable. The fairing is a boon in highways. I have seen this thing do some 100 kmph (120 kmph speedo) in one of our bangalore G2G rides.

Fazer will suit you. But, since you have some concerns about handling the steering, you need to take a call by test driving it. All faired bikes will be initially bit difficult / confusing in the steering part, as the fairing will be aligned with bikes direction and the steering has to go alone when you turn, you don't get to see the front wheel turning either. This is just a illusion will keep you bit disturbed during initial days. Better, learn to drive first, get a license and then go for the test drive, if you are comfortable with these facts, you can go for fazer.
