  • Need to buy 1st bike under 1 lakh

    1. Budget - around 90k upto a max of 1 lakh
    2. Age - 25
    3. Height - 5.5
    4. Weight - 65
    5. Intended usage - Mostly City use with occasional trips with friends
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement - >50kmpl
    7. City of residence - Trivandrum, Kerala

I am looking for a bike with good comfort for rider and pillion. Bike should be reliable for long term use. I am considering 150 - 160cc bikes as I think they are powerful enough and they offer good comfort also. i usually drive in a relaxed manner gradually picking up speed rather than quick accelerations. I am actually torn between gixxer and unicorn 160.

Gixxer is a very good bike. Looks awesome and a great all digital instrument cluster. The only downsides I found was less after sales service and pillion comfort is not so good(seat is small and high. so less space to sit for pillion if the rider has a bag). I also have concerns regarding the reliability and maintenance of an open chain case in wet and muddy conditions.

I have driven the older unicorn 150 and is a good bike. I like its upright seating position. Its disadvantages are weight, less flick-ability and generally driving it is nowhere near as inspiring as driving gixxer. That is why I am considering unicorn 160. In paper at least they have addressed all of my concerns. The downsides i have heard about honda is poorer quality of switches and generally everything other than engine compared to the competition. Please help me make a decision. Thanks in advance.

Fz V2. Yamaha, proven after sales service. Good pillion comfort. Has engine kill switch which is still missin gon honda which is a pity. Switch gears are all good quality.
If you are not much bothered about mileage, then go for this, since FZ returns the least among your mentioned list. (apprx 40 kmpl)
      R15S - Current
      Honda Dio - Current
      TNT 600i - Sold
      Classic 500 - Sold
      Pulsar 220 dtsi - Sold
      Yamaha YBX125 - Sold

FZ V2.0 suits your bill I think. Also, due to the presence of the FI, it should return you 45-47 kmpl if you ride it sanely. Build quality is perhaps the best in class.

I looking for fuel efficiency too. Yamaha being fuel injected and the lightest bike in the comparison and returning the least mileage is kinda strange. The older FZ\'s tank is a little too long which makes me lean forward and get my body weight on my hands. My hands start aching after I drive FZ for a while. I think I maybe having smaller hands. That is why I kept FZ as my last option.

Choose among FZ and Gixxer. You are just 25 so Unicorn may feel boring

I am currently riding my new Gixxer and once in every 10 days I ride my old Unicorn.
Everything you mentioned above is absolutely true.
If you drive in a relaxed manner then go for Unicorn with eyes closed. Unicorn\'s comfort is much better than that of Gixxer\'s. Be it upright position or pillion comfort or ground clearance or softer seat or closed chain(my chain lasted 47K kms) or bigger battery for lighting upgrade etc etc. For longer rides Unicorn is definitely better than Gixxer.

For everything else go for Gixxer.

                +1 for the above post.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

ONly 2 bike will fit for you. yamaha FZS FI or Suzuki Gixxer 155. BOth feels same as per riding and braking goes. But FZS has bit of upper hand when it comes to pillion comfort. Also after sales and mileage(57kmpl for me from last few months). Honda Engine are outdated now.

thank you very much sandeepcf. In Unicorn 160, honda claims to have addressed the weight, flick-ability and driving dynamics while retaining the characteristics which make the old unicorn so popular. If this is true in real world tests, i will definitely go for unicorn.

One more question if I am going for Unicorn 160, is paying 5000 more just for the CBS worth it. I have seen reviews which say CBS is very good and others say that CBS is only for beginners and it makes braking worse for people who simultaneously use front and rear brake.

I am not considering the old unicorn but the newer unicorn 160. The old unicorn has been going without any changes for like 10 years. It is surely outdated. I am actually holding off buying the bike just to see the new unicorn\\\\\\\'s reviews.

I feel go for gixxer if you are looking for power and decent mileage. Unicorn is same old design with new engine. Just test drive onces. I think FSZ FI(Good Mileage & build quality) or Gixxer is the bike for you.

I can suggest you the TVS Apache RTR 180 ABS for under Rs.1,00,000.The RTR 180 ABS is known to be one of the Greatest bikes under the 1 Lakh price Mark.RTR has the right balance between Power and Mileage. You can expect 40-50 Kmpl or even more than that if ridden Normally and can go down Maximum to 35 Kmpl and can never go below that. The engine is actually a Suzuki Fiero Block which is Tried,Tested and Proven for Years. You will love the Exhaust note of the RTR too.Looks are completely from your Eyes so I can\'t comment on that but still IMHO,I love the White RTR 180 ABS New ones.Added As you are 5\"5,RTR will suit you better than the FZ and GiXXeR.Also FZ has it\'s power lowered even more.It already had low power for a 150cc 4-Stroke Engine.GiXXeR is an awesome bike,Great Looks,Very Smooth Ride,Great Exhaust note.etc.Some owners have reported Quality Issues like the Frame Rusting,Oil Leakage on the Engine Head.etc.TVS Dealerships have more coverage than Suzuki,Honda and Yamaha. Also Spare parts are also cheaper than Suzuki,Honda and Yamaha.Quality is good too.Down-side is that It\'s not a Commuter-ish Bike but is best suited for City Traffic.

P.S - If you want more than 50 KMPL,No 150cc will give you that.Get down to the 125-135cc area,Get the Discover 125 ST or TVS Phoenix 125 or Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS.These can give you more than 50 Kmpl if ridden Normally

P.P.S - Go get an Old Suzuki Samurai,Do a complete restoration and You will get more than 50 Kmpl
