Well , for a start 883s are not out and out cruisers , handle pretty well and last a life time.
Have very good reliability of cycle parts and engine .
Tons of upgrade options that will keep you interested .
Not too expensive to maintain if you do it outside the official dealership - parts are available all over internet and turn out cheaper than dealership even after shipping and duties)

In fact it's best to score a low mileage 883( Superlow preferred for 4/4.5) - spend 1.5/2lc on it)
you get the bling and the xing in that money.
Give most of the superbikes below 10 a run for their money and still remain that happy HD

    Z800 is another good option.

If you can stretch your budget to 12L, look no further than Triumph's Tiger. It does everything possible on land, and much more. Comes with ABS and MSC, awesome suspension, multiple riding modes. If you a re a tourer, and love to get on the less known tracks, and love to munch up miles on the highway, this is the bike for you. However, when it comes to bumper to bumper traffic, it does become quite a handful to handle, not to mention the heat. But one awesome piece of machinery nonetheless.

I don't know if this helps you or not.

I was in a similar situation, with a lower budget of 2lac. My options were Duke 390, and Thunderbird 500. I was advised to go for RE for my body structure, same as you. But I chose Duke. It made more sense to me. As, it being a naked is more versatile than a cruiser or a faired bike, no offense to anyone. I would suggest, write down your requirements, then decide among the bikes.

Biggest surprise to hear that Harley Davidson in Chennai isn't customer friendly. In Pune it is the opposite. Two brands are leading in Pune when it comes to superbikes.
HD is #1 and Triumph is #2. Both have very good attitude towards customers.

Both go out of the way to give you test ride etc. In terms of service also, I heard good about both.

I have just got Street Triple and its servicing will come up in next 10-12 days..Then I can say more about it - but overall feedback has been good about them...
Shame that in Chennai HD is not good..

Why not try Triumph Bonneville then? IF you really like classic style, then Bonneville T100 really ticks the boxes! With Arrow exhaust they sound good too! Of course that will be quite costly - but then it is worth IMO.

Benelli 600 i and Benelli 600 GT are also good options. But 600i would be good for city riding and occasional medium distance touring. 600 GT would be a bit cumbersome in city riding but good tourer.

Note - both don't yet have ABS and not sure when they will get - by 2017 or 2018 they will..But can you wait that long?

Honda CBR 650F is also a good sport tourer and is quite comfortable in city riding also. Ground clearance can be a bit of worry - similar to triumph Street Triple.

If you are not too particular about ABS, then surely go for Benelli. HD is more about looking good, sounding even better and munching miles at reasonably fast speed (still very fast by Indian standard). Whereas Benellis and Triumphs are about looking and sounding good but going really fast - these are not meant for Kanyakumari to Kashmir kind of rides...though people do it even on KTM Duke 200...

Purely for city riding and occasional weekend ride of say up to 200 km..Look no further than KTM Duke 200/390....Those are unmatched! But if you insist on multi cylinder engined superbike - then you are limited only by your budget...

And yes i don't like the Bonneville.

              hi brother,

With your budget, you can buy DUCATI Monster 796. With 803 cc and 85 bhp, she is an amazing machine. She can be used for commuting, track use or weekend fun. She will give you performance as well as big bike feel together, and OH BOY! Do they look good ?

              DUCATIS
are like Katrina kaif of the biking world. They never look bad with anyone. They always look beautiful.

Still, if you are confused, take the test ride of each bike and listen to your guts.

              Cheers......

                  Have you considered Bonneville?

You can also have an all rounder like 650F.

Mate, the more I ride my Red Rose ie. Street Triple, the more I am liking it! It's sweet sounding, really light footed to handle any bumper to bumper traffic and acceleration rocks even with 80 bhp stock condition..It is really quick even while riding just up to 7000 RPM (actual range is 13000 RPM - if one uses that, it will simply go crazy and will take hell lot of effort to control it).

I think I have taken a right decision...I had almost decided for Kawasaki Z800 due to attraction of its 113 ps power...But now I feel like it might have been overwhelming for my riding capacity!! If street triple is so crazy with 80 bhp, Z800 is absolutely insane...

Bonus is that Red Rose is rather comfortable in day to day riding....

I think you should decide between these two only...Unless you are crazy about faired bikes - in that case CBR 650 also has a strong case.

Kawasaki Ninja 650 doesn't have ABS, DSK benelli 600i doesn't have ABS, Triumph Bonnie doesn't have ABS either...So surely ruling them out..Boss, ABS is definitely needed - we are certainly not as good as Rossi or any other Indian racers who race even on R15 on racing circuits...Let's not fool ourselves...I mean I am indeed good - better than quite a few people who ride similar bikes but not so good that I don't need ABS at all!!

the TS hasn't logged on to xBHP for the last 8 months.

honestly... i have no idea why these threads get approved in the first place.

Colgate Plax or Listerine Original? I also like Dove shampoo. please help me decide. I have 500-800 rupees to spend.

how in the world would the TS really be helped with 3 pages of opinions on choosing from a lot of bikes that are so different in character?

@TS: if you've you ever log on here again... since you've got 8-12 lac... buy yourself a used ZX14R.
