  • Looking for an easy rider primarily for weekend rides - Budget 2-2.5 Lakhs max

    Hi All,

This is the first time I am seeking advice on buying a bike on this forum so please excuse any lapses.

    About me:
    Budget - 2 - 2.5 Lakhs (max)
    Age - 26
    Height - 6 Ft
    Weight - 85 Kgs
Intended Usage - Weekends - 250 Kms, maybe few weekdays but I already have a bike which I use on the weekdays for Office commute (Pulsar 200 NS)
80% riding on highways and about 20% in city
Brand/Bike Preference - Royal Enfield Continental GT
Not interested in - RE CLassic, T'bird, Electra or Standard, KTM bikes (too powerful for me), Bike with Fairing (Ninja, CBR, etc)
Intention of purchasing - next 3 months

I know it sort of seems from the preference that I have made up my mind but the truth is I havent come across many GT owners so I have no clue what the bike is like to live with. 2 Test rides were enough to make me fall in love but the reason I am also unsure is the reliability factor. I owned a bullet a decade ago and had sold it off due to its long list of problems. It used to spend more time with the mechanic than with me. Although I was relatively new to biking I never was rash or the sort of kid who sought an adrenaline rush with the twist of the throttle.

Since then I graduated to relatively faster and nimble bikes for their ease of maintenance (read CBZ classic and my current bike Pulsar 200 NS). I have begun touring mainly solo for the past year and though my NS gets the job done with relative ease and comfort, I really feel like graduating to something purer for the highways. Acceleration and top speed are not a criteria.

I have test ridden all the bikes I have mentioned in the criteria above and cannot stretch my budget beyond 2.5 lakhs. Even test rode the HD Street 750 but gave up the idea since buying it may be easier than maintaining it.

I guess I am looking for any suggestions for a bike other than the GT. Also if anyone can tell me how the bike is like to live with on a day to day basis - reliability mainly, I would be highly obliged. Havent seen too many ownership reviews online and posted the query in the Bullet forum too about a week ago but did not get any response. My reason for disliking the T'bird is the ride position, it didnt suit me. I loved the Classic 500, but it doesnt seem unique anymore, almost every 5 minutes you see one. The GT has the perfect mix of sporty and touring riding position. Again, please feel free to suggest any other bike which you may feel fit the bill.

Apologies for the long write up.

    Thanks in advance!

You are looking for an easy rider yet you don't like the riding position of the T'bird, but prefer the clipons of the GT!!!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

You already have an "easy rider" (ns 200). I'd say get the Rc 390- perfect bike for weekend rides!

I don't think you have much options in that price bracket when you have excluded fairing , and sports bike like cbr ,.etc.
IMO , this would be best for you. However , do have a look at the KTM 390 ( non - rc variant ).

If I were to choose , I would have considered KTM 390 followed by CBR250 ,and thunderbird and then Duke 200 .

If you go for a RE, you have to cope with the niggles and hassles that come with the brand name. There is no escaping it. The technology is decades old and quality of parts and build quality is far below the Japanese companies. CBR250R, Duke 390 should be very good for touring and if you want a bike now. If you can wait R3/R25 and CBR300R is coming out soon. Then you'll have a good choice of bikes to choose from. All the best.

                Hi Monk,

I was myself surprised. Till the rode the GT I assumed the ride position is as aggressive as the R15, but its actually quite comfortable.

                Hi Incipient,

Thanks for the suggestion but the RC is overkill for me when it comes to power delivery and the ride stance is way too ccommitted!

                Hi Richardson,

Test rode the Duke 390 and loved it. But again its one of those bikes which really needs someone who can handle all the power on tap. I humbly step back when it comes to the KTMs, they are excellent adrenaline pumping machines, but Im not that skilled!

                Hi Biker,

Nice to know you too are from the same state. The Yamaha is an awesome machine. Not my preference because its not a cruiser and Im not really into bikes with fairings.

                Hi Ankey,

So RE is still the same then? Any hands on experience with the GT?

                    # Yes 2 of my friends own one a classic and a electra, and there are things that creep up every now and then. Broken clutch cable while coming to office, leaky heads, rusting in a few months, no tubeless tyres even when the bike costs more than a lakh, Service centers that know nothing at all.

                    # Not really, I'm afraid. We dont see many GTs out here, very very few have been sold. So I cant vouch about it. But reviews have been pretty good.
You can take test ride and then decide.

Now 2.5 lakhs is a good budget but then you have narrowed down your choices by going against faired bikes. CBR250 Abs would have been a good choice. Now, talking about nakeds, you have few choices. D390, Z250 are the best I can think of around this budget. KTM has this niggling issues whereas Z250 is above your budget at 3 lacs.

Almost all the bikes that comes in your budget are listed but you have reasons to skip each one of them, that's good! Why don't you have look at the tried and tested Bajaj Avenger. It suits your bill exactly and a good news too, yes Bajaj is in the process of updating Avenger. Go for Suzuki Inazuma 250 as that is one of the best bikes that falls perfectly in your requirement. It is a little odd in the looks department from rear but otherwise a fantastic machine for highways and city too. Atleast go and have a test ride on it.

I read about a month ago somewhere that it is being discontinued because of low sales. is it true?

Yes. The sales will stop but the service and support will continue.

At the pricepoint, this bike, being 2 cylinder is a fantastic buy even if it will be discontinued in next 2 months. But yes once the bike is discontinued, there is always a chance of scarcity of spares. Though usual spares will be readily available specific components may not be.

Only Suzuki Inazuma 250, KTM Duke200, KTM Duke390, RE are the only bikes that fit your requirement. If your requirements change then there could be other bikes as well.
