• Recommendation required: SUZUKI GIXXER vs. BAJAJ PULSAR 200NS

Hello Xbhpians...! This is my first post on Xbhp with regard to my recent requirement of purchasing a new bike and I need suggestions of all the experts here based on the following factors.

I am 22 years old guy having a height of 5 ft 7 in., weight is 72 kgs. I've only owned one two wheeler till date: The Activa since my school days and do not have a long term experience riding a bike which means I am new to it. Now a new bike is soon going to replace the Activa and I'm looking forward to purchase a bike not less than 150 cc in any case as the bikes in that range lose breath if driven exceeding 80 kmph and aren't best to have fun in long stretch of empty roads or for going on long trips.

I've short listed the Suzuki Gixxer and Bajaj Pulsar 200ns and would like to point out a few facts to help you all understand my circumstance to base your choice upon:

1. My driving will be 75-80 percent in the city and only 20-25 percent on the highways/long stretch of roads free from traffic. In fact sometimes (monthly) this ratio could be 90:10 (city:highway).

2. I love elegant and decency more than cartoonish or embellishing looks. In fact the faired bikes (like the R15) are a bit overkill for me.

3. Budget is around Rs. 90,000 but could be stretched by upto Rs. 10k if I'm getting something extraordinary by paying that extra amount.

4. Mileage is not a big issue for me as my running some days could even be less than 10kms, but if I get it good, it would obviously be a bonus...!

Based on the facts above, I'm personally being driven in favour of Gixxer..it is cheaper by almost Rs. 15k, has got top-of-the-class performance, head turning looks and has new engine as well. Then comes the 200NS...the only thing driving me crazy about this one is its power and its road presence.

Therefore my questions at last:
1. So is the spending of Rs 15k more justified
for more power of 200ns and its dominant presence...?
2.
200 NS is relatively aged compared to the Gixxer. It is a fresher bike with an all new engine whereas the one on 200ns is about 3 years older and may soon be upgraded in versions to come.
3. Worrying thing about the Gixxer are some issues relating to it which I read on the Ownership thread of xbhp including rusting problems, hard gear shifts, engine oil leaks and poor paint quality. Should that stop me from buying a Gixxer...?
4. Which bike of the two is more FUTURE-PROOF...? By future-proof I mean the quality of bike to remain like new and perform with full grunt for a longer period of time since I already remarked above I won't be upgrading for a long time.
5. I visited both Suzuki and Bajaj showrooms here. Without a doubt the dealing of Suzuki seemed to be incredibly transparent to me. Bajaj was in fact not even much interested in selling its bike and it seemed they've just got piled up with them a few old models of 200ns which they are hardly interested in selling. This awkward attitude of the sales plus service centre of Bajaj is not confidence-inspiring when it comes to reliability of after sales service. Also, Suzuki has been incredibly helpful in resolving all their customers' woes online (Source: Ownership thread, Suzuki Gixxer, xbhp)
6.How much is the difference in the top end performances of both the bikes...? Does 200 ns beat gixxer in that by a huge margin...?

Sorry for the long post guys, but I've to make an informed decision so that i do not regret it. Please provide your inputs..! Thanks.

P.S.: This is my first ever post on Xbhp.

My answers :
1. So is the spending of Rs 15k more justified for more power of 200ns and its dominant presence...?

A- 15k more will take you in different category which is worth the money.

2.
200 NS is relatively aged compared to the Gixxer. It is a fresher bike with an all new engine whereas the one on 200ns is about 3 years older and may soon be upgraded in versions to come.

A: Main salient features of ns will remain same though they might launch ss(soon), as, fi version of ns. I don't think engine and other properties are going to change any time soon.

3. Worrying thing about the Gixxer are some issues relating to it which I read on the Ownership thread of xbhp including rusting problems, hard gear shifts, engine oil leaks and poor paint quality. Should that stop me from buying a Gixxer...?
A- both bikes have similar problems. Even ns has got same but at the end it all depends upon your maintainance and regular usage.

4. Which bike of the two is more FUTURE-PROOF...? By future-proof I mean the quality of bike to remain like new and perform with full grunt for a longer period of time since I already remarked above I won't be upgrading for a long time.

A- i don't see pulsar upgrading the engine anytime soon. And definitely pulsar won't loose power in long run.

Also, Suzuki has been incredibly helpful in resolving all their customers' woes online (Source: Ownership thread, Suzuki Gixxer, xbhp)

A- that is because suzuki doesn't have big market presence as bajaj. Their bikes speak for themselves. But i agree that ASS of bajaj is just average, though spare parts are cheap.

6.How much is the difference in the top end performances of both the bikes...? Does 200 ns beat gixxer in that by a huge margin...?
A- i don't think both are comparable here. Ns goes upto 135 kmph which is more than enough.

PS: I own a pulsar 200ns hence my views might be a little biased.

Both bikes are good.one thing i want to mentioned that if you are riding more than 100 kmph speed on the highway get the pulsar 200ns.gixxer is no match in 0-60,0-100kmph speed.pulsar does it in 3.1 and 9.6seconds.top speed is 136 kmph.mileage is 35-40kmpl.

If you are riding under 90 kmph speed than get the suzuki gixxer and you love the exhaust note.it gives 42-48kmpl.top speed is 115 kmph.

Please take a test ride of 200NS and confirm yourself that the height of 200NS is not a problem for you. Both your feet should touch the ground to manage the bike's weight esp when your riding is 90% in city. Also check if you can lift 200NS(when in stand still position) easily when it is tilted. And check if you can unpark the vehicle easily.
Because these are the things that take the fun away from 200NS.

Re: Recommendation required: SUZUKI GIXXER vs. BAJAJ PULSAR 200NS

Thanks for your input Jazzy, since you already own the 200ns, would you please answer the following queries respecting the same:
1. What's your height...? Do you find it difficult for your legs to reach ground while driving....?
2. How is your experience in making the bike almost crawl in the heavy city traffic...? Is the weight or dimensions of the bike an issue while negotiating traffic. I am asking thisbecause the majority of my riding will be in city and if riding this bike is indeed a problem in traffic, it might be a deal-breaker for me.
4. On an average, how much mileage you've been getting..?
3. How much frequently do you require to shift gears in lower speeds...?
And lastly, how has been your experience with the quality of the bike (any major troubles..?) since you've owned it and how has been the record of the Bajaj Service centre in your city...?

If this bike easily excels in city driving, I won't be left with any reasons to reject it...! After all a 200cc undoubtedly adds to the fun factor, road presence and longevity of the engine as it would have enough grunt left even after years of use. :-)

Sandeep, I will surely take a test tomorrow to ascertain if height of the bike is a problem for me. I will also check its manageability with respect to parking, lifting, etc. which would obviously be the actions which I will have to perform umpteen times each day. Only if its manageable for me, I would consider going for it. Thanks for your valuable advice.

Re: Recommendation required: SUZUKI GIXXER vs. BAJAJ PULSAR 200NS

The only problem is the weight of the bike, 200NS is too heavy for a naked bike, and like all pulsars it is front heavy, which takes a toll in handling.

So take a long test ride and see if you manage the weight and can maneuver it in city traffic.

As for the gear shifts, it has 6 gears, so yes you will have to shift gears quite a lot. Every time you spot a speed breaker, you have to come down from 6th to 2nd. So you'll have to learn to keep shifting gears all the time. After a few thousand kms, it becomes and habit and you dont even notice that you had shifted from 6th to 1st in about 3 seconds.

So relax and take test ride and figure out if it suits you or not.
All the best.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

1. What's your height...? Do you find it difficult for your legs to reach ground while driving....?

I'm 6'1'' so no problem at all.

A- good handler in traffic. No issues there.

4. On an average, how much mileage you've been getting..?

A- 35-38 kmpl

3. How much frequently do you require to shift gears in lower speeds...?

A- it has linear acceleration and will give you enough time to manouvre on a particular gear.

And lastly, how has been your experience with the quality of the bike (any major troubles..?) since you've owned it and how has been the record of the Bajaj Service centre in your city...?

A- i have had carburator issues for which i blame bajaj ASS. Its just average.

If this bike easily excels in city driving, I won't be left with any reasons to reject it...! After all a 200cc undoubtedly adds to the fun factor, road presence and longevity of the engine as it would have enough grunt left even after years of use. :-)

A- i totally agree.

One thing: Gixxer is light and more flick-able in traffic as compared to 200NS.
You wont feel down as its best in 150 category and has more than enough power for city traffic, Japanese engine means it will last long without trouble.

200nS is good for highway as it has more power and can continously maintain 100kph without much stress. But as you will be driving mostlyin city, you should be happy with Gixxer.

completed two years on NS this month.

What a bike. Truly international in terms of built quality and power delivery.

Added advantage is bulletproof bajaj service experience. These guys take customers more seriously than the seriousness with which a top ranker sits for Civil Services Exam!

If you have a height > 5'9" - go for the pulsar. It will outlive you.

p.s.
my last bike, the dtsi 180. we planned a trip to mussoorie and were one bike short. my brother dusted it, put engine oil and petrol. cleaned the air filter and the bike came to power in two kicks! - Thats Bajaj. issueless bike.

Thanks Ankey. I will take a test ride very soon and check the manageability of the bike and will throw light on its manageability. If its manageable, then I think I shouldn't be much hesitant to choose it over the Gixxer. It will of course require a bit of learning curve and time, but for a person like me who would not be upgrading his bike for at least 5-6 years to come, I shouldn't be feeling bored/low in power after 2 or 3 years of use. And of course when you own a product like 200NS which is a top-of-the-line thing, the psychological satisfaction you get may control that "urge" to upgrade the bike after passage of just a few years.

The "future-proof" thing I wrote in my requirement has hardly got to do much with actual longevity of the bike because I know even Splendors when maintained properly last 10 years or so, then Gixxer would surely do the needful. But this "future-proof" thing actually and honestly for me is much more related to my psychological contentment and nothing more...! And this contentment comes more with a 200cc bike than a 150cc one...!! A bike enthusiast like you might understand what I am trying to say... :-)

Thanks for that suggestion mate. Couldn't test ride the 200NS due to some busy schedule. Will test ride it for sure very soon. If it isn't physically manageable, I will outrigtly cancel that and go for the Gixxer, but if it is manageable to me, then maybe I'll take multiple rides in the city and would choose it over Gixxer if I could, given some time and experience learn to ride it in traffic as time passes then definitely 200NS is an incredibly equipped bike in almost Rs. 15k more...! A lot depends on the test ride now.

NS is pure performance
Gixxer is normal bike with comfort and smoothness

U can expect mileage from gixxer than ns

Re: Recommendation required: SUZUKI GIXXER vs. BAJAJ PULSAR 200NS

Hey guys,
I'm extremely sorry for taking a longish 2 week for taking a final decision, but that i think is justified as every decision must be taken after thorough analysis and research. So finally guys, I've booked the Pulsar 200NS owing to following reasons:

1. Checked the manageability of 200NS with respect to its weight, seat height, ergonomics, seating position and my legs reaching the ground or not (my height being 5 ft 7 in). Believe me guys this bike is one of the most comfortable bikes I've ever seated upon..! The seat is incredibly comfortable with ample of space and width for both rider and the pillion. My legs also reached the ground quite well.

2. Rode the NS on a long stretch of road (although didn't get the chance to ride it in traffic). The bike felt extremely planted and inspired confidence to take it to higher speeds. Lower gear torque delivery was also not a problem as I managed to test its gear shifting at low speeds. It was comfortable. Also, the gear shifting is very smooth.

3. The bike when driven at lower speeds doesn't feel as if one's riding a 200cc bike or a heavy one. Its very-well manageable, feels smooth without any vibrations. In one word, riding this bike was completely EFFORTLESS for me although I'm new to riding bikes.

The oodles of confidence and adaptability this bike provided me in its first-ever ride itself made me go for it blindly without a second thought. Even I was surprised at the way I was able to manage the bike overall.

So,here's the decision guys. This bike is indeed putting Rs. 15K over Gixxer, at least in my view any day (if one's budget allows that being done).
Will post pictures of the bike plus the review in the ownership thread. Thank you guys for being the part of my decision. It is only because you guys persuaded me to analyse the bike's manageability, was I able to take a quick and concrete decision...Thanks a lot people..!!
