  • Yamaha R15 v2 or Fazer fi v2?

Guys, I'm planning to buy my first bike this april and i'm going to be 18, doing 1st year B.E. in Chennai.
    I'm confused between the R15 v2 and the fz/fazer fi v2.
I'm not a very experienced rider, just learned to ride a few months back in a pulsar 150 and now in a fazer v1. so I really don't know if i need the 17hp bike or the 13.1hp one.
My parents recommend me the fazer/fz since i learn't in it and its pillion seat is low and comfortable for my parents but whenever i see a R15, i'll just freeze..
It is my dream bike too since it released back in 2011...
also is R15 really worth the extra 30K? and since i'm a newbie and studying, i don't do long tours on my bike..

    My requirements:
    Looks!!
    Mileage doesn't matter much..
Power, i don't know if i'll need the extra 4hp.. though fazer seemed a little underpowered for me with a pillion..
    reliability and durability.

My parents are nowhere against R15. They said if you really love it to the core, get the R15 but my mum said she won't sit on it.
So should i allow my parents to pay the extra 30k and get my dream bike or go for fazer v2 which my parents recommend??

P.S. ONLY YAMAHA! fixed between these two. Other options may be the cbr 150r 2015 but i don't think honda'll release anytime soon and it'll be costlier too.

    Pros of R15v2 against fazer;
    more power
    6 speed
liquid cooling[though i do only short rides]
    best in class handling
    LOOKS like a SUPERSPORT bike
    FULLY faired
    beautiful console
LED tail lamps and able to turn both headlights
    disc breaks
riding posture makes easier to control
built to last and withstand all sorts of torture[though i handle my things like a new born baby]
    DREAM bike

    pros of fazer against R15;
    more low end
    30K CHEAPER
pillion seat more accessible especially for my parents
does not attract too much attention
    released in 2015
    more comfortable ride

i went through xbhp for alot of days and there were comparisions between R15/cbr or fazer/fz/rtr180 but nowhere between fazer/r15 so created a new thread. hope you xhpians could sort me out

    Query Approved

The two bikes are chalk and cheese. But for all practical purposes i think the FZ would be good enough for your requirements.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

All practicality and pros of fazer can take a back seat. In my opinion, go for your DREAM bike and you'll never regret anything.

But yes pillion seat is uncomfortable and if parents have no other vehicle to manage then choose fazer else go with R15.

R15 anyday. I would better go for an overall package than settle for something less. From my own experience I can tell that. There is no point fretting over after buying. Choose wisely.

Tough decision to make here... But all your requirements points to R15 except for pillion seat. My opinion, follow your dream and you'll love every km on R15. When your parents are not forcing you, why get a different bike and feel later? Good luck on choosing and do let us know your choice

Re: Yamaha R15 v2 or Fazer fi v2?

Hi there, A fellow R15 Rider here.

I was in the same position just a year ago. The feelings for the 15 are mutual. It was my dream bike too, and I also had to choose between my dream and practicality. The only difference is, I was buying it with my own money, so I did not had any kind of pressure from any one, and as far as I can make out from your post you are free to choose either. So you know the pros, let me tell you all the cons of living with an R15 everyday.

            * You guessed it right, the pillion seat is bloody useless. But mind you my mom's school is on the route to my office so I drop her to school everyday (6 Kms). And man it is a tough job. The wrists pains, the moment you touch the brakes, the whole weight of the pillion comes to your shoulders and wrists. My father refuses to sit on it so I have to take the car or activa when I have to go with my father. short city rides are ok with a pillion, but long tours are brutal punishment for your shoulders and wrists. I once did about 250 kms with a pillion, my body hurt for about a week. But riding solo on it is the most incredible feeling.

So it is a bit easier to live with the R15, if you have other practical vehicles(activa) at home.

And thats about it. Everything else is best. I am even getting 50kmpl from mine.

I would suggest that you listen to your heart, and go for it. I did, and I never regret my decision.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll be more than happy to help.
            Ride safe.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Its simple to decide between the two.
If you take pillion often, get Fazer, else R15 eyes closed.

              Ride safe and have fun.

+1 for the above. I had the same thought, If you think you will travel more with pillion rider on board, go for the fazer. But IMO, Since you are in college and if you travel mostly solo and give your friends a ride to nearby bus-stop, and if you travel more solo, go for R15 (dot).

Thank you so much guys for your replies and oponions.
I went to the yamaha showroom yesterday with my dad and we enquired about both the bikes. They were very kind and on the bike, the riding position seemed very good but when my dad tried to hop into the pillion seat, he found it very difficult to hop in and out and now he's considering about the ktm duke 200.. So, will be going to the ktm showroom tomorrow at adyar, chennai. So it's now the R15 or KTM. :/
Btw the on-road price for the limited holi edition is 1,33,000INR dangerously close to the duke.

Thank you bro for your opinion but this one is going to be the only bike or any other vehicle at home. That's the problem now. We don't have a backup vehicle like activa.

Ok brother, Duke is also a good bike but it will cost you about 1.5 lakhs on road, which is a big amount, and a big burden on your parent's pocket. And Duke faces the same problem...the pillion seat is again just present, it does not serve any purpose either (just like the R15). Its pillion seat is so small that if you have a college bag on your back, the pillion seat will be covered with it. Check it out, if it suits you, and the budget is not a problem, go for it.

Now, time for some grown up brotherly talk.

In your situation I would suggest you not to spend too much of your parent's money on an expensive bike. you just need something to go to college, so any bike will do. Yes I know you want to have a cool sports bike, but there is a lot of time to fulfill your dream. I had my cousin's 18 year old hand me down splendor when I was studying. And when I got a job, got a good salary, I bought my R15 with my own money. So if you focus on your studies now, you'll be earning a good salary 4 years later, and then you can buy whatever you want, whenever you want. Thats what I did. And believe me, it may seem important to have a sports bike in college now, but its really not, I passed out last year and I have already forgotten the names of my classmates (except my best friends). Yes there were guys with cool expensive bikes in my college, but nobody remembers who rode a R15 and who rode a scooty. Its not important any more, the important thing is that I work at a multinational company, earn good money and buy whatever the hell I want. So focus on your studies now, get rich and live like a king. focus on other things now, and you'll have to struggle later.

Take it as a bit of advice from elder brother. think about it.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Choose wisely.

we went to the ktm and my dad liked the duke very much. So we're probably going for it. The on road price in chennai is 157,000inr and my parents are ok with it.
And i'm not going to show off the bike in college :P as college bus is mandatory in my college
And the bike is for short rides to places nearby, weekend refreshment rides and joyrides (joyride in the sense not driving harshly). I don't think a commuter bike would be enough for mr as i felt even the fazer to be slightly underpowered with a pillion.
That'll be my bike for the next atleast 4-7 years. so why not buy a bigger good bike rather than buying a commuter now and a bigger bike after three years?
