  • Suggest Me a Commuter Bike Please

    Hello Friends

I am in a stage of confusion in selecting a bike for my daily commute of around 50 kms. I currently own a Kawasaki 4S Champion which has completed 85,000 Kms and planning to send it back to my native as its carburetor has become weak and no more available in Bangalore market. Oh BTW my wife owns a TVS Wego so no more scooters please.

I am primarily looking for a commuter type bike which would be used for dropping kids, travel with wife for shopping near-by and daily office commute, here are things I am looking at
    1) Price: 60 K to 70 K On road
    2) Mileage: Decent 55 to 60 KMpL
    3) Comfort: It is tough to drive with family on vehicles like Pulsar, Gixxer etc so looking for a bike with good seating comfort for both me and wife.
    4) Handling: Absolute preference for Vehicle stability, no compromise
    5) Features: prefer to have digital clutter (speedometer etc)
    6) Looks wise: OK, I own an Toyota Etios which means I prefer performance than appearance.
    7) Post Ownership Issues: Reasonable price for maintenance and spares, good service and vehicle care is preferred.
    8) Lower depreciation or good resale value

Sorry for the exhaustive list but considering the above, could you please suggest me a vehicle that would help me to easily shortlist.

    Thanks

    Query Approved

You should check out and test ride the commuter oriented 150s.

Honda Unicorn 160 (price might be a concern), Discover 150, GS 150 (though been in the market for a long time)
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

There aren't many bikes with digital speedometer at the price range you are asking for. The only bikes that come to mind is the Passion series (Pro, XPro and Pro TR) and TVS Phoenix. The only 150cc bike in your price bracket would be the Discover 150S or F. It is based on the 125ST which I had ridden extensively. Stability? What stability? Stay away from this one. And power is available only at the higher rev range which sucks in city especially with two people. Also coming from a 4S which has a smooth engine you will not appreciate this coarse bajaj engine. Another 150cc can be included in your list which costs slightly higher than your budget. It is the not so popular Hero Achiever. I have always felt this bike is underrated. Should serve as a good commuter. Smooth engine and good service. However, please enquire about parts availability for this model. Also it may not have good re-sale value due to its poor sales and image amongst people.

For the price range and fuel efficiency you are asking for, 125cc bikes would make sense. Lets talk about the Hero range of bike first. Firstly most Hero bikes have good resale value except some like Achiever, Karizma and CBZ Xtreme. Glamour is a great bike with excellent torquey and smooth engine (as all Hero bikes). Pulls so well at low revs. As a matter of fact I learnt to ride on a Glamour (Drum brakes). Never felt any handling problems. But make sure you get the disc brake version as the front drum brakes weren't so good. The rear seat is very comfortable. After 3 years of owning my uncle sold the bike for almost 50k. FE was 60+ all the time.
Super Splendor is exactly the same bike with different panels as far as I know. However, it doesn't have a disc brake version(why on earth did hero decide to stop disc version!?). It costs about 2k lesser than the Glamour. Small differences do exist. The Super splendor has a flatter seat while the Glamour rear seat is slightly inclined (not a problem really). The rear tires are slightly wider on the Glamour. Both these are under your budget.
The Hero Ignitor is another option. Would cost about 2-3k more than your budget. Don't be fooled by its sporty looks. It is still a commuter. Uses the same engine as the above bikes but makes slightly more power and feels even more smooth. If your wife seats sidewards, the split seat could pose a problem. Not sure though. Go for the disc version again.

TVS Pheonix is another good contender. Costs about 60k on road. Looks great, has good build quality and is aimed at being slightly upmarket commuter. As far as I know, TVS bikes have decent resale value. Seat is flat here too. Comes with disc brake and digital speedometer. Only woe in opinion is the TVS tires which can be terrible in wet surfaces. Not sure if it is available with any other tire option.

The only sensible bike from Honda's stable for your requirement I can think of is the Twister which is a 110cc bike. The 125CC Shine is a great product but has skinny tires as said in many reviews. Otherwise Shine should also do justice to this list. Smoooooth engine, decent power for city use, good seats (slightly smaller than competition I believe).

Th only bike from Suzuki I would suggest is the GS150R. Yes it costs, 10k more than your budget but it is such a great product. Smooth engine, great build quality, fantastic mileage (with 6gears), good low end torque for city use and incredibly stable. However, you may feel the difference in weight between this and 4S, should get used to it though. One condition is you need to make sure you have a good suzuki service centre. Not many are good, but bangalore should have some good ones. No idea on its resale value. Spares may be an issue but generally nothing falls off so easily.

Yamaha SS125 is also a good bike. Looks fantastic, should be able to deliver the mileage you ask for. Surprisingly, the SZ-S costs close to the SS125, despite being a 150cc. SZ is another underrated bike in the market. If ridden sanely should give 50-55kmpl. Have not heard of 60kmpl so far. My friend owns one. However, one major problem is that it comes with TVS tires. I have heard enough horror stories from my friend. With better rubber though the bike handle impeccably. Some Yamaha service centres have very bad reputation so enquire around before looking for a Yamaha.

If you need good fuel efficiency, good re-sale value and trouble free experience, Hero's stable would be my choice. However, TVS is not bad either. I would stay away from Bajaj especially with their hit and quit policy of commuter bikes in the recent years. Suzuki is a safe bet if you have a good service centre. Yamaha bikes are reliable but are focused a little on sportiness rather than fuel efficiency, at least compared to competition. Honda, extremely reliable bikes, but spares have been problem in the past. Not sure how the scenario is now.

Same engine block I believe with different head since orientation is different. The bore and stroke are identical.

+1 to the suggestion on Achiever, its an underrated bike and i think its available for around 73K in here, The only problem could be with spares or resale value and I felt the tyres were thinner compared to other 150cc bikes
TVS Phoenix is also a good bike with very good suspension ( the best I have TD'ed so far) it has a smooth and punchy engine as well
If you do want to buy a Honda bike though, my suggestion is to ensure you have a good ASC nearby, my personal experience with Honda ASC has been very bad and I would recommend to avoid Honda just for this one reason
Do speed breakers break speed or break backs !!!

Re: Suggest Me a Commuter Bike Please

All your requirements should be satisfied by SS125. It has very good build quality, comfort level for both rider and pillion, almost zero vibrations and handling is a charm. Power is also reasonable(11 bhp for a 125cc). Within 40kmph, you might feel the bike is a little short on low-end torque and you will not be wrong. But, once you reach 40kmph, you will be surprised by the power output and exhaust note.
I have done 22.3K in my Nov-2012 SS125. Among this, my wife was pillion for at least 7-7.5K kms. She has not complained even once. Some of my trips were to remote villages of the Sunderbans with almost non-existent roads. I get around 53-54 kmpl in 70% city and 30% highway and off-road riding.
SS125 does not have a digital cluster. But trust me, you will find the movements within the console exciting enough.
Take a TR and decide. Don't forget to take your wife along to check the pillion comfort.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Re: Suggest Me a Commuter Bike Please

Go for Glamour, if you want good resale value, reliable bike with good proven engine and wide spread service centers all over the country.

Go for Shine, if you want a city bike with ultra short gearing, good Honda engine but bad Honda service centers.

Go for SZ-S, if you want best in class handling, super smooth and reliable Yamaha engine and fairly good service centers. Mileage will be a bit less coz its a 150 cc mil.

                  Test ride and then decide.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Wow. You do know what you are looking for. To be honest in todays market there are too many bikes that will check all your requirements. Also, all bikes have got there own pros and cons. My suggestion is go to dealers take some TD's and shortlist few bikes that you like. Based on that you can decide which bike to finally settle for depending on their pros and cons. The options right now are way too many in this segment. If I had to suggest just one bike based on your requirements it would be discovery 150.

                        Hi,

I am new to this forum. Saw this thread's subject similar to what I am looking out for. So thought of appending my query in this thread.

I know it might sound insane (as many of my friends / well wishers said), but I'm looking for a bike for daily commuting. The total distance per day covered would be approx 200Kms . Around 170 - 180 Kms will be highway. Taking into consideration the distance to be covered, I'd prefer to go for a cruiser bike. Can you please suggest good cruiser bikes? The features which I look for are
                        1. Comfort
                        2. Reliability
                        3. After Sales Service & its cost

I narrowed down to Hyosung Aquilla 250 & HD Street 750. Would like to know which one is better considering the points I mentioned above. If there are other bikes to be considered, I am also open for it too.
