  • Activa Troubles Want to Upgrade

    Hi Fellow xBHPians,

Need to upgrade my Honda Activa 2012 model which is nothing short of BIG headache for me and my family. Overall experience till date is the worst ever. Let me brief the whole scenario. First of all there were limited options in mid 2012 so had to settle for Honda for Brand and Value. The scooter was serviced regularly but some how 3rd free service was missed due to closure of Authorized center (which also lead to loss of 500 bucks of Teflon coating as no other center honored the same). Now came the horror of Engine stalling all of a sudden one fine day and when taken to Authorized center at Subash Nagar Bhasin Honda, we were told that Engine Compression Loss which would cost around 5-6k. Surprised n Shocked I decided to take this up with Honda as warranty was still left but no contact details on site. Had to do a lot of research only to find one official email address from here to which no reply till date. Showed it to another authorized center Shubham Honda and now it was diagnosed to some issue with spark plug which was 400 bucks job and fixed. The engine stalling issue has happened twice since then and Shubham Honda were there to the rescue with acceptable level of service. Till date, for me this is unreliable machine with poor fuel efficiency, poor front suspension, bumpy rear suspension, poor quality and build. Now it has fuel leakage issue for which it is taken to authorized center again. Right now I am looking for a better scooter with major focus on 3 parameters namely: FE, Ride, After sales and Reliability. Space consideration is also for Dad's usage.

    1. Budget: Up to 60k
    2. Age: Mine (28) Father (50+)
    3. Height: 5.8 and 5.5 ( Dad n I)
    4. Weight: 65 kg (Both Approx)
    5. Intended usage (e.g. Office/College commute, Highway runs, Racetrack usage, Weekend recreation riding etc.): Daily Commute to Office for me and used by Dad for procuring manufacturing related spares or machinery parts.
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any) : The more the better as it is more on driving style.
    7. City & Highway percentage usage: City Only
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running: 50 Kms Daily Approx
    9. City / Town /Village of residence (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing): New Delhi
    10. Brand / Bike type preference (if any): Following with Reason
TVS Jupiter (Read too many issue's reported by owners else where plus service center availability so not sure whether a quality or reliable product though most feature rich but none useful in our usage)
Suzuki Swish (Not aware of Overall Experience and Nearby Service center as it is limited)
Yamaha Alpha (Previous Experience FZ-S, till the time I owned BEST experience with 0 issues partly thanks to valuable suggestions in the dedicated thread here. Service center too within 10 minutes distance)
Hero Maestro ( Previous Experience was CBZ & till the time I owned, best after sales and reliability)

    Query Approved

You have been terribly unlucky with your Activa i guess, since there are tons of happy owners out there.

The TVS Wego, Suzuki Access have been pretty well received. You might want to TD one of them.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Yes you can say that because one of my friend has an Activa which dates back to initial days and is still running fine with minor care of course! My Reservations with TVS is Quality and SVC while with Suzuki is availability of SVC! Any heads up on the parameters? My research closes me to TVS Jupiter and Yamaha Alpha wherein Yamaha Experience was very good earlier but TVS will be first time so kind of experiment so need information for same.

Yamaha Ray-Z: Friend using it since almost 2 years. No issues till date. Only issue is that, the fibre body tends to rattle if ridden roughly. Good pillion comfort, good engine.

TVS Jupiter: More male oriented scooter as compared to Wego. IMO, this is a good scooter (as per my friend's experience) with no issues. Only issue will be SVC availability in your area. Love the Matte Black color on it.

Headlight can be replaced, Head cannot be. Wear a helmet.

Colors definitely it is awesome! I have seen the variety and know the features. I will google SVC as not sure
Regarding Ray it is out in the first place as Dad too will use so Alpha is more I need opinion on. Same fibre body or like activa partly metal and fibre?
Correct me if I am wrong

Update: Checked Suzuki SVC is at least 45 mins away, TVS & Hero are closer and Yamaha is closest. Bear in mind good A.S.S. is a requirement hence mentioned.

Checked with friend, Ray-Z is full fibre body.

Any specific reason, why are you so attracted to Alpha?

Re: Activa Troubles Want to Upgrade

Not attracted to Alpha as such it's just that Ray is too flashy for me or my Dad. I consider it to fit my requirement in terms of Design.

Right now, thanks to guidance I have narrowed down to TVS Jupiter, Hero Maestro and Yamaha Alpha. Kindly enlighten on parameter's in my first post.
Didn't consider Mahindra as not at all comfortable with the Brand. Any other Brand or Gear less Scooter Please suggest in case I have missed.

Re: Activa Troubles Want to Upgrade

I'd suggest Alpha. The build and ride quality is top notch. One of my senior colleague had bought Alpha 6-7 months back and has not found any reason to complain so far. Looks are color are subjective matters and you are the best judge on those fronts. But, trust me, the engine and handling in Alpha is brilliant.
One very important aspect is after sales service. And the folks at Yamaha(at least in my place) are very professional. Sadly A.S.S. is ignored by many new buyers who are on the lookout of a new bike.
Jupiter comes second as it has some interesting features and more power. Not sure about the A.S.S. but had one bitter experience when I was looking to buy my bike.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

I am also looking for an upgrade from my activa but mine is 2007 model, nearly 8 year old. I m upgrading only because of its terrible mileage. It gives me 25-27 kmpl. Looking for a dio or ray Z

I am using one of the first lot of Activas for 15 years. No problems. I recently spent 9k to refurbish it and now its as good as new. If I had sold it I would have got 12k. A new bike costs about 55k. My suggestion is to give it to a good mechanic and sort out all the issues and then use it for at least another 5-6 years.

Re: Activa Troubles Want to Upgrade

Go to a TVS showroom, ask for test ride. See their attitude towards the customer. If dissatisfied, Skip Jupiter altogether. I have a Jupiter which is 4700 kms old now, only because The Showroom people and SVC mechs are very good here.
Then the next best option would be Alpha. As far as my experience go, you wont be disappointed by Yamaha SVC at most of the places in India.
What Alpha lacks is- Tubeless tire and 12" wheels. Hence I have put it second in preference list.

I always get the advise pointing me in right direction Love this forum

I did test drove Jupiter today before checking the post. Have some confusion now.
                          1) Seats were soft and hence I am expecting tiring long rides just like Activa . Suspension was good though.
                          2) Features are there agreed. Hands down winner! Not much functional to me though.
                          3) External filler lid sounded good but you have to dismount. Only difference no seat holding.
                          4) Pass Switch was awesome
                          5) Engine nice and smooth. Felt very responsive.
                          6) Quality seemed average and overall TD impression was average. Build seemed flimsy to me just a personal opinion.

A.S.S. was courteous but SVC is again far off so will be a hassle to maintain as my dad thinks SVC are nothing but fraudsters . He always prefers local mechanic of his choice which I find hard to trust some how.

Test Drove Alpha much earlier and my findings were as follows:
                          1) The most basic scooter in terms of feature. Just no excuses here
                          2) Engine, Build and that smoothness. Simply reminded me of FZ Days. Vibe Free n Pleasant.
                          3) Seats and ride were firm but bumps were taken care well.
                          4) A.S.S. is trustworthy since FZ Days and as I said 10 mins away.
                          5) Quality was a step up but GC makes me doubtful over scraping bottom.
                          6) Rest all was good and overall positive impression.

So Both scooters miles ahead if compared with my Activa. Will get 20-25k in exchange. Price is too 55k approx for both with accessories and ready delivery. I tested normal Alpha not the Blue Core one which as per TD Personnel had "little more fun and better FE". (He mentioned of speeding up to 90 as Top speed to which I sternly said that scooters for me are not meant for such stupid things at all. Traffic sense is just so uncommon these days)

So now will decide amongst them. Thanks all for input and if any heads up Please post.

My experience till date has made me lose faith in the brand as well as their product. As I have said earlier, my friend too has first lot (earlier generation) Activa which is still up and running with no major issue's. But I have faced a little too much for my comfort plus it took a while to get right SVC. My point is right now I could get something better by adding 30k which will only increase later. And since my office commute is uncomfortable, I am concerned over time wear n tear plus the difficulty dad faces but never tells. So considering an upgrade.

I bought a Yamaha Alpha for my sister in December last year and so far I am very satisfied with it. so far I am impressed with the quality and smoothness of the engine. it gives good mileage, engine is butter smooth, the telescopic forks up front make riding on bad roads easy and Yamaha reliability is very good.
                            So +1 for Alpha.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

I have previously owned 3 Activa's and finally switched to Jupiter. It's been over a year with Jupiter for me and it's the best scooter I ever had. Ride is smooth and swift and so is the comfort. No maintenance cost yet except for the servicing. I can blindly advice you to go for Jupiter. Activa matches no where near.
