  • My first motorcycle after honda activa.

    Hi Guys,

Its time for me to think about getting my first motorcycle and i need your help and suggestion.

My very first bike was a second hand honda activa which i rode for almost 2 years, but then i had to sell it since it was giving me a lot of trouble.

Now i want to get myself a bike, basically to common to and from work.
I would travel about 20-25 kms everyday.
Currently i travel by bus or auto to work.
In past two months the bus fare have been gone up twice, so i was thinking travelling by a bike would be actually cheaper!!!
I would have to pay Rs. 44 if i travel by bus everyday(return journey). If auto, then almost Rs. 130 for one side.

So please suggest me, a good looking bike, not too expensive, with good mileage bike.

Yesterday i went to check out few bikes

    1. Yamaha fz 16 - priced@81000
    2. Honda Unicorn 160- priced@85000
    3. Suxuki gixxer - priced@87000

Other bikes which i saw were pulsar 150, discover 150 also fz version 2.0 but its a little expensive for me(priced@99000).

I was actually also considering pulsar 135, but i heard tht i shud avoid bajaj bikes, since they kind of give problems after 2-3 years (i dont know how true is that!!).

I heard tht fz16 is being discontinued from production, so will that be a problem if i get one???

Any inputs about the make and lasting of the bikes, coz i intend to keep it for a long time and not just change it in a few years.

So guys, any inputs, any suggestion, anything at all from you experienced guys will be very very helpful.

    Btw i am from mumbai.

    Thanks,
    Vinay.

Avoid typing in sms lingo on the forum.

Any bike will serve you good as long as you care for it, be it Honda or Bajaj.

Try the 125cc segment as well if you're looking for mileage with only city being the main area of commute.

Consider anything between Unicorn 160 and Gixxer. . . Both the bikes are good, both offer good power, better tech and gives you a healthy mileage too, better than the FZ (I guess FZ doesn't give that much FE, someone correct me if am wrong), . . As they are Japanese machines, they are build to last . . .

PS: Do consider the Pulsar 150AS or wait for the 150NS (BAJAJ BRANDS ARE RELIABLE, it's all about how you maintain the bike).

      Cheers!!!

      Scooty Pep - 2008 - 2012 (sold)
      Honda Unicorn - 2012 - 2015 (crashed)
Hero Honda Splendor+ 2015 - present (temporary ride)
      Bajaj Pulsar AS200 - 16th September 2015 - present ride

If not the FZ 2.0, Gixxer it should be. Perfect bike for starters.
Pulsar 150 might be replaced by newer versions, Uni 160 isnt putting the sales chart on fire. So you are left with no other options.

The Honda unicorn 160 is one for you
          It's has
          1) more mileage

          FUEL EFFICIENCY
          Highway(kmpl)
          Uni 64.7
          Gixxer 57.78
          City(kmpl)
          Uni 60.2
          Gixxer 54.7
          Overall(kmpl)
          Uni 61.33
          Gixxer 55.7

          2) Better power and torque

          Engine capacity
          Uni 162.7cc
          Gixxer 155cc
          Valvetrain
          Uni 2 valve, SOHC
          Gixxer 2 valve, SOHC
          Max power
          Uni 14.71PS@8,000rpm
          Gixxer 14.8PS@8,000rpm
          Max torque
          Uni 14.61Nm@6,000rpm
          Gixxer 14Nm@6,000rpm
          Weight
          Uni 108.96
          Gixxer 109.63

          3) it's more convenient for daily use
          4) honda reliability

Well the Gixxer is more a performance machine and a very good looking bike .
But the STD variate of the uni is 1000rs cheaper than the Gixxer but if you want additional safety uni has a CBS variate too .

Thanks to all for the suggestions and inputs.

However, yesterday i saw one more bike and would like to have all your views about it.

            Its, Hero Xtreme Sports.
Please let me know if this is a better choice than Gixxer?

I also heard that Hero provides a 5 years warranty for this bike.

            Thanks in advance,
            Vinay

Re: My first motorcycle after honda activa.

What kept me from not buying a unicorn was,
              1. No DC electricals, ie headlamp will flicker at lower rpms and light will be low.
              2. Switches are very outdated, still like splendour, passion etc and no Engine on/off switch.
              3. Honda SVCs are terrible here.(Kannur & Kasargod, Kerala)
Apart from these, Unicorn is a great bike.

Gixxer on the other hand, has DC lighting, better switch gear and same price, SVC is also very good and very smooth engine.

I'd say, go to the showroom, take a test ride, decide for yourself. Because you know what you need better.

              Cheers !
