  • Power+Comfort+Low maintenance

This is my first post here and I expect it to be first steps towards an enriching association with the fellow travelers at xbhp. I would turn 29 this year and somehow life took me for such a ride that I could never book a ride for myself. So after years of suppressed desires and drenched dreams I would finally be able to lay hands on my machine. Coming to the point directly:-
    1. 5.8 in height with athletic built.
    2. Budget < Rs 2 lakhs
    3. Fuel efficiency is not of much concern
    4. Looks must not be aggressive.
    Now two most crucial points:-

    4. I will be posted in Himachal Pradesh(exact place unknown) and need the bike for daily office commute as well as occasional/weekend excursions to places.

    5. I need a bike which requires low maintenance-not cost wise but time wise. I would keep my bike clean and get it serviced/change oil whenever it is due but more than that I want a bike which can face the elements on its own, and yet perform. In short I want a bike that can be abused. This is primarily because time will be of major concern to me and also, being first bike, I am not adept at these things.

I have been trawling the net since past few days and have following bikes in mind(going by their review):-

    • Thunderbird 500-> I am not much a fan follower of RE or its characteristic Bullet thump yet this bike is one hell of a looker and performs its task well. But from what I have learned through internet RE bikes are difficult to maintain. These face issues such as oil leaks, disc brakes noise, rusting, water entering parts and to top it all poor after sales of RE. Am I correct or TB is a much better machine not bugged by these issues? Also TB does not come with tubeless tyre and a flat tyre in mountainous area on a 190 kgs bike send jitters down my spine. Yet Thunderbird allures me so please help me dissolve any misconception.
    • CBR 250-> I haven't found anything adverse about this bike but to be frank its looks are totally uninspiring-especially the back. Also what you guys have to say about parts availability.
    • Karizma ZMR(2014 version)-> This is the bike which I return to again and again. Most of the times because of its look(yes I find it enticing) but also because of its trusted engine and tag of a tourer attached with it. Yet in recent days, on this only forum I found out certain tappet/valve issues with the bike, affecting almost all of the owners once. Also there is a concern with the parts availability of HH bikes. Am I correct or the fear is exaggerated?
    • Finally in Bajaj I find present crop of Pulsars to be less interesting but the looks and feel of CS400 are breath taking. Any idea when can these be released? Price range?

    Phew

Edit: I forgot to mention pillion comfortability. As I am looking to host friends and family alike I suppose a bike for two would make a reasonable purchase.

      Re: Power+Comfort+Low maintenance

Lately Enfields have become slightly more reliable compared to previous generation models. But still many problems persist. Especially long time for servicing and delivery. And most of the service stations are not reliable. Go for the TB only if you are an RE fan.

If you are looking for a bike soon, then waiting for Pulsar400 makes no sense. It will be atleast Diwali when the bike comes out. Could be worth it though. NS has proven to be a VFM, low maintenance product. I would say NS200 would make a good contender for your usage. Unless you want to cruise above 120kmph.

I don't know much about the 2014 ZMR. Yes, there have been reports of tappet noise. That's because of the increased lift of the valves. Generally HH doesn't have spares issue but Karizma has always been a menace when it comes to spares availability. Better ask around at the service centre (Not showroom). The bike is definitely low maintenance, comfortable and cruises well upto say 110kmph as per ZMR thread on XBHP.

CBR is my vote. Excellent for both commutes and touring. Honda spares and servicing has been a problem since a long time. Enquire around if there is a good service centre at the place you shall be posted. However, the bike is well built and nothing should fall off so easily. Get the ABS version if CBR. CBR is in a different league when it comes to performance and cruising compared to the above bikes. Caution: CBR spares cost a hell lot more than any bike in its category.

Being a RE owner myself, I drive a CL500...I find it damn difficult to maintain and the maintenance is bloody steep, if you dont even bother to keep it in good condition. Yes, The niggles are still there and IMO, i dont recommend an RE to anyone (dont know why i said that).

you can go for NS, easy maintenance, wont eat your time away, Spares are easily available. Should be reliable for 4-5 years, can be abused (I guess). Tubelss tyres...decent looks.

You made an interesting point here. Experience really talks. I would ask around the place and get to know about the service centres available nearby. Regarding CBR I know its a great machine, its just that its looks doesn't get the better of me-especially its anodyne back. Nevertheless I am going to give it a test ride and after enquiring about its service centres would decide on it. Also I read somewhere that delivery of CBR takes time in months. So lets see

Isn't NS stance too agressive- I mean seating position and pillion comfortability? Considering an improved 200cc engine on RS200 do you recommend test driving RS/AS too?

Any Thunderbird owner please respond. I am almost getting weak on knees after seeing this marine blue surfer.

What is its long term review? Off-road capability? How many times do you all faced stalled bikes, flat tyres when off-roading? And how does it responds in humid/rainy conditions?

Honda has gone on a hiatus, their dealerships aren't selling the CBR 250R currently. You may wait for the new face-lifted CBR which might launch soon.

I recently bought a Duke 390, it's a fantastic machine. The 2015 Duke comes with goodies such as a slipper clutch (it isn't heavy, like the older Dukes), good quality grips, an improved rear mud guard, comfy seats etc. But it is quite a handful in traffic or at low speeds and it has got love-it-or-hate-it looks and sound. TR a Duke 390 too.

Sorry for the late reply. I am afraid that I can't go beyond 2 lakh asharfiyan and both Duke and CBR(new version) are going to cost more than it.

Dude.. The duke costs 1.8 max on road.. [emoji15]

CBR is agreed.. More costly than the duke.. Try the latest pulsar RS.. It will fit in perfectly..
