  • Please help Finalize a workhorse

    History

It is some time since I have posted here in xBhp. I stopped using my motorcycle, a Pulsar 180 UG3, in 2012. Apart from some posts in the help-me section, with info I remember, I was mostly cut-off from the motorcycling world.

    Requirement

Now, I again feel the need to use a motorcycle. There are some things a car and public transport simply can't do. This time, i'm looking for a used vehicle. I maintain my vehicles meticulously but do not have the time care for a new baby. Also, no capacity for heartache when it is scratched or when someone else wants to borrow it. Plus, I need to be able to park it here and there, which would not be easy if I were in possession of a brand new bike.

I am looking for a workhorse. No daily commute, but frequent errands 5-10km, sometimes multiple times a day, some days off, and the occasional 50-100km trips, when it should not feel inadequate. Also, May have to lend it to close friends if the need arises. I am not looking for a tourer or a sport, something 15-20 bhp. I have tentatively finalised to either a Pulsar 180, Pulsar 220, or Pulsar 200NS of 2012 or later, no modifications and run not more than 10k km per year on average.

The reason for the P-180 is that, I am quite familiar with the bike, its electrical, general engine maintenance, body work etc... But, I am also weary of Bajaj's poor service and spares availability.

The reason for the P-220 is again, familiar bike. But I do not like the faired version, and the Street-fighter is quite rare on the used market.

The reason for the P-200NS is only more power, better looking, more advanced tech. But I do not know how reliable, or complex it is to maintain, how the spare availability is, and and specific niggles it has.

    My resources

My budget is preferably below 75k and lower according to year and condition, but the general market price of the bike is OK. I have a good array of tools and above average mechanical ability to do basic maintenance. So, I would like a bike which I can mostly service myself.

    Help me

Please recommend a bike, even one that I have not mentioned, to suit my requirements, with reason(s) why. Thanking you for your help.

First of all every bike will have certain problems and we can't predict when ,so you must be ready to face it .
well regular maintenance can be done by your self like oil change , filter cleaning , chain lube etc....
Since you said You would be lending the bike with other people and each of their driving style is different so it's not good for the bike .Parking here and there is OK but only where you bike is protected form the natural elements . To fit for your requirements buying an old second bajaj bike is not at all good , better you go with yamaha or honda . Because of their quality and educrance. If you are ready to care more then Bajaj bikes would be ok .
I don't ride a bike to add days to my life .
I ride a bike to add life to my days !

Second hand bajaj is no no until the owner has taken a really good care of it ..
Workhorse and being reliable points to hero , honda or yamaha ...
For city purpose 100cc - 150cc should be good

There is passion , twister, yuga (100cc)

        Splendour, shine(125cc)

        Sz-r , hunk, cbz,unicorn,fz-s (150cc)

You can alternative check gs150 or gixxer from suzuki both 150cc or mahindra centuro ..

But i think a 125cc should suffice as workhorse needs .. Along being frugal its easy to maintain

Go for a Crux or Ybr. The Crux specially has awesome build quality to last any terrain. Reminds me of another legend - Rajdoot. Rough and tough.
Else go for Unicorn. A proven workhorse in the 150cc segment. Smooth engine and build quality is very good as well.

A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Firstly, thank you all for your response. Also, sorry for the delay in posting back.

I agree that all machines will have problems at some point of time, but what I was enquiring about was, specific common problems of specific bikes. eg.: front console vibrations on Pulsars, after wash start troubles with Bullets etc...
Also, long term parking will be at home. Here and there was referring to quick stops.
Thank you for your advice. I agree about Yamaha and Honda reliability, but seem to be expensive, even on the used market.

Sadly, I have to agree about used Bajaj bikes. Unless it was really cared for, it is a trap. So, I have further tightened my tolerances. Now looking for 2015, less than 5000km vehicles.
Honda and Yamaha expensive, Hero I dislike.
There is no option of going under 150cc. I will have to do a few long highway trips and sub 150cc will be torture.
            Again, Gixxer not enough power.
I am not disregarding your advice, but I need "more power Scotty". So, it will be RTR 180, P-180, P-220 or P-200.
It's a bike, it will drink lesser than cars; that's all I think about in the fuel economy department.

            Unicorn too expensive.

When I said workhorse, I feel people are thinking I will be trashing it. No, I will still give it all the love I give my vehicles. And I want to enjoy riding it.
            Will update.
