  • Planning to buy my first bike....Please suggest

    Hi
I am living in Chennai currently
I'm in a beginners stage in biking.Means I know how to drive but not used to in city traffic.
    Age-23
    Height-5'11"
    Weight-75
    Budget-around 1 lakh
I will use the bike for office commuting(40 kms roundtrip) and some weekend trips to pondicherry or bangalore and may be once in a year some long trips if I get a chance
Monthly usage will be around 1000 km in an average and city to highway ratio will be 85:15
Mileage above 35 will be good
    Mostly I will drive solo
I am planning to buy the bike in June so please suggest me
I have two bikes in my mind right now Pulsar 200 ns and Suzuki Gixxer but I'm open for any other options also apart from that

P.S-I dont like faired bikes much

Also check out the AS200 and the FZ Fi V 2.0.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

+1 for the above. NS is a great bike. But, Since you dont have much experience in driving through Chennai traffic, My advice would be get a 2nd hand bike initially (i know you will want to get a new one as your first) and get used to the traffic riding conditions inside city and go for an upgrade.

If you want to jump directly into the pool, NS will be a decent bike. But little over powered for beginers, Gixxer will be a good buy, and use can use the balance amount to get yourself a good riding gear later.

The NS200 will be perfect. It's having liquid , 35+ mileage, good performance, good handling and good touring bike .

But also do check the semi fairing AS200 with same NS200 features and performance . It's better than the ns200 for touring .

NS is a great bike but kinda an overkill for a beginner and particularly for your usage. You can go for Gixxer. Gixxer can cruise well at 90kmph. But if you feel the need for higher cruising speeds for your tours NS would be better. But still I would suggest you to go for Gixxer since you are a beginner and need to understand the dynamics of our road conditions. Only problem with Gixxer is you need to find a good suzuki service centre. Suzuki has a bad name in after sales support. But chennai ones are decent AFAIK. Anyways do enquire the customers before locking on one showroom/service centre. Gixxer will have slightly better handling and fuel efficiency compared to NS.

+1 for the above post. A Gixxer will do just fine for a beginner.
It is reliable smooth and easy to handle in traffic.
Upgrade after a few years when you have gained enough confidence and experience to tame a more powerful beast.

Take test rides and then decide.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Thanks everyone for your valuable suggestions
I will test ride all the bikes you have suggested then decide
One more thing I want to ask.... I wont be able to change or upgrade my bike for next 3-4 years. So remembering that in my mind which bike shall I buy??
I mean which bike has more reliability??
or I wont feel the need of extra power after learning properly in 3-4 months

Actually my landlord told me that he'll give me his bike(Splendor) to practice if I buy petrol :P
so I can use his bike for 1 months

Thank your landlord first, My landlord in Bangalore used to shout even if we parked the vehicle near the building.

Right then, In need of more Power is always there. My suggestion, go for NS, you can turn yourself into a very well matured rider and do your upgrade. Frankly speaking, I learnt my driving skills in my P220 for 5 years from 2008-2013.

Honda and Suzuki bikes are very reliable. They will last long with minimum maintenance. You could also consider Honda Unicorn 160 and Hero Xtreme (Cheaper option).

Trust me whichever bike you get, after a while you will want more power. After I got my Karizma I felt like I had all the power I needed. Several months later when touring alongside Duke 390 and Ninja 250 I felt the need for power. So it matters what your usage. Just think if you are really going to use that power and how many instances do you really get to use the power. Else stick to under 16-17 bhp for city use. Also you are a beginner.

Or like TheArcher84 mentioned, go for used bike, make all mistakes, learn well and then go for a slightly powerful one like 200NS or even CBR.

I am also more interested about gixxer
And I like little stylish bike also so thats why no unicorn or xtreme
And my budget wont allow me CBR

                        Hi all,

Practiced well in my landlord's bike and scooty for last one month in road conditions(>200km). Now gained some confidence.
But unfortunately the production of 200ns is stopped. So going to book Gixxer by this weekend.

Tje production has been stopped for few months as the plants are busy producing as 200 and rs 200. Why not as 200 it has the same tech as ns just a faired version and projector lamps. No offence but i would Suggst as 200 over gixxor. I was in same dilemma a month ago but now i am happy i chose ns200.

Actually I don't like the looks of AS.
And apart from that also now I'm planning to be little practical. Gixxer will cost me almost 20k less. So I can go for a good gears.
And I think Gixxer will also fit for my requirements as I'm just a beginner.
Some experienced guys also advised me in this thread to go for Gixxer instead of 200ns cause that'll be overpowered for a beginner
