  • Getting a second hand CBR250R ABS Version. Please Help!

    Hi all,

I've been using the Karizma R 2012 edition and would like to switch to the Honda CBR250R ABS version to experience something different. Dealers here in Mumbai say it's out of production & I really don't mind going in for a used one.

However, since it's a used bike I have some questions -

There's a 2011 bike that has crossed 35K kms up for sale. It's a first owner bike & he's quoting 80k. Is it worth it?

What are the main things I should be looking out for a used CBR? Any common checks to perform. I would like to purchase something that has clocked less than 15 - 20K KMS and manufactured in 2012. How much should I quote for one should I come across something similar?

Lastly & most importantly, I've heard spares are costly and also scarcely available. Will it be an issue moving forward considering there's a 300R in the works and for a release this year?

Your advise here would definitely help me make the right moves.

    Cheers,
    Jude

I own a 2011 ABS model 80K for the bike sort of justified if you don't have too many parts to replace like tyres, disc brakes etc.
Coming to spare parts I live in Chennai there are only 2 dealers that I know of have any spare you want for CBR so it all depends on the dealer.
And yes spares are costly and some parts are different for different years also for example the lock set for 2011 costs around 10-11k whereas 2013 model onwards it costs 5-6k.
I don't think there will be issue with parts in future also because it's a global model and many parts are same as the new 300cc bike and there are some people (check in cbr250.net) who fitted CBR300 fairing to CBR250 (I don't recommend though).

Here's my suggestions for second hand bike
        1. Before going to seller try riding one of your friends bike so that it will give you impression how bike should feel like. Once you go to seller ask for test drive and that should give some hints.
        2. Check if any accidents happened many people use frame protectors some times they actually damage the frame more than protecting them so check the frame of the bike if its damaged or not.
        3. Stretch your budget and go for 2013 model at-least because they MAY save your money in spares. If you can't then also its fine my bike after almost 4 years of (40K ) usage the bike starts with 1 push of button without accelerator and drives like a dream.

AFAIK, the 2011 first batch CBRs had some quality issues and were also recalled by Honda for some small replacements. I would suggest you to get a 2012-2013 ABS model. But expect a price of 1.2-1.5l. Anyhow, do check the 2011 model you have locked on already. Check its service history for timely service and any accidental repairs in general. Also as Krishna has mentioned check out the differences in spare parts price. Going for a 80k bike and spending more on spares and getting a later model for higher price and spending less on spares will be almost the same for a year or so financially. The difference is the latter will give you peace of mind. I strongly recommend you to read shv18's article posted by New guy here. Very informative. Also do post some queries in the CBR 250R ownership thread, if you don't get answers here. I don't think spares will be an issue since the 250R is a global model. Spares should be available but in India Honda always has spares availability issues no matter what motorcycle. It takes some time to order and receive a part. Read through the ownership thread well before buying. One of the most knowledgeable thread I know in xbhp.

Re: Getting a second hand CBR250R ABS Version. Please Help!

Thanks to everyone for replying. I went checked the 80K bike and it was in bad shape so rejected it. I now have 2 options to look at this week. A 9k KM run black ABS for 1.20 and a Repsol 2014 ABS for 1.40 that is 10K run.

I personally want a bike that's 2013 and later, so ready to shell out more.

I spoke to a few owners here and they've confirmed spare parts availability issues in Mumbai. Even a foot peg and mud guard are hard to find! That is upsetting me the most!

            Thanks,
            Jude

Bro Recall was done for standard variant not the ABS.

Thank you. I stand corrected. But still there were some issues with the quality of parts in the first batch.

I don't think so bro mine is 2011 only didn't faced engine problems may be few bad apples like when duke came it had coolant leak issue and when duke 390 came it had alloy wheel breakage issue.

The most common issue I see in CBR is shim problem it is common across all year models.

Humble request...please don't generalize this statement. Mine was changed about 34000+ Km ago & the noises are quite audible only now post 6500 RPM & I'm sure it will with stand for next 3000-4000 more Km before changing them.

If you come across the "common problem", please attribute it to...

I'm not generalizing the problem but every now and then we see people complaining about vibrations and you may be right about the reasons too.
Mine has done around 40K I also have changed only once
