  • Please help me choose my first steed

    Hello my fellow xbhpians,

    About me:

    Age- 19 soon 20

Weight - 73kgs (bone weight, im not fat)

    Height - 5'7"

Occupation - engg student 3rd year cse

Travel - occational college runs (20% highway+80% city with medium traffic), few weekend outings nothing over 200kms in the cards now.

Experience - learned riding on my dads pulsar 150 dtsi (2004 model) , 2+ years riding maestro and dio, 124kms ride on friend's unicorn 150, short rides on: fzs fi, duke 200, classic 350, 200ns (kinda tall for me).

Now Im going to buy a bike for myself and yeah my dad is going to buy it for me and that is what is making this really hard.I'm hailing from a middle class family so Im not that financially sound but my father wants me to take a 150cc bike and that is going to be expensive like a 75k to a lakh( the discover 150 duos are out of the question). But I dont want to because 150cc have poor milage and maintenance and One of the things I hate is going to my parents for money for maintaing my bike and fuel, after all they spend nearly a lakh yearly for me and my sister's college fee, so I'd like to keep those things to a minimum, that is, I need a bike with good milage and very low maintenance. I have a really bad weakness for the awesome KTM duke 200, so as soon as i get a job, ill be changing to a duke.

EDIT: Im searching for a good 150cc as my dad said he will be using my bike after I change to the KTM, so my priorities now are:
    Low on maintenance
    Good looks
    Good fe

    Kudos in advance.
    Please help me.

A 125cc bike is what you are looking for then? Good mileage, decent looks and light on the pocket. Ride it till you finish your education and then upgrade to something better with your own money.

By the way, I like the way you think

    All the best!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

I have a really bad weakness for the awesome KTM duke 200, so as soon as i get a job, ill be selling this motorcycle after using it for maybe 5 years maximum, so I need very good resale value too and it should have sufficient looks as after all Im a college goer and yes Im a safety freak so Ill be investing in every riding gear I can seem to afford.

      Kudos in advance.

you sound very responsible so 'Saluto' my friend!

Live like you mean it, then get a bike!

I've looked it up, a really good bike, looks decent too and within my budget too. do you have any idea about its mileage? And do the new yamaha bikes have good resale value?

Mileage - on paper yamaha claims 65kmpl *. this is launched in 2015, so you may find very few ownership reviews/exp/suggestions. but should give you +/- the number quoted by yamaha.

On Resale, i am no expert buddy. if this is your first bike, then believe me you will never-ever think of selling it, just like the kapil sharma's olx ad on TV 'Chipkoing'. you will get attached to you it so bad, that you feel like you are 'Jack Sully' and its your 'Toruk Makto'

but you can always get opinions from other yamaha owners around here, who sold their bikes.

Ride happy. Ride Safe! always wear helmet!

We are proud with the way you think. hats off to you for that atleast.

IMO, Go for dream series from Honda, Decent mileage. If I may ask, what is the distance from your home to college, since you need a bike with good mileage so that you can cut down on the running cost atleast.

2 others which I would say - purely for mileage - TVS Star city or Platina ES.

Thank you archer, the up and down distance between my home and college would be about 37kms.

Platina is ideal. Not a speed machine. I am saying this purely based out of mileage perspective. Its may not be a head-turner. Since this is just going to be your steed till you lay your hands on your-heart-throbbing machine. I would recommend this. Easy going on maintenance too...Spares dont cost you a fortune. Should be fine for city as its light and nimble since you are going to drive in city mostly.

Yeah vedavyas this is my first bike, oh 65kmpl , Im no expert either but dont you think that is a bit low considering, saluto has a 125cc mill producing 8.5 bhp and 10.1nm torque that too coupled with a light body and blue core tech.

i bet yamaha is playing safe here

then we may have to settle for something that is established from Bajaj or Honda Stable!

yeah present generation glamour (carb/fi ) will also be a good option to consider. my brother in law was totally disatisfied with glamour and its maintianance when it was hero honda.

now hero might have made it a better machine, one of my colleague recently bough glamour carb version and he is happy with it.

also watch out for the after sales support/spares as well.

not sure on the ignitor, personally i don't like the looks of it and also have no exp riding it.

So I have kind of shortlisted on these bikes,

+Tvs pheonix 125 ( because the service center is near by, and my friends said the service is good and the bike looks decent with so many features but Im worried about the TVS tyres )

+ Hero splendor ismart ( looks decent in the black and silver avatar, have a great milage with a bullet proof engine)

+ Honda shine ( not really interested due to the dullest looks but none the less, it has honda engine, so this is like a last option)

+ hero ignitor ( looks wierd but instrument cluster is good, engine is same as shines and its fun to ride as per review reports)

+ bajaj discover 125 ( Just wanted to give it a try)

So is there any bikes i should add to the list or remove?

I' m gonna do testdrives based on this list.
