• Please suggest a good bike for me from given information

Hello everyone, I am looking for a new bike. This will be my first bike but i do have some prior experience of riding so i am not a newbie.

Budget : 65000 ( might be stretched up to 69000 if I really like the bike and feel that bike is worth spending that extra)

Purpose: Bike will mostly be used for commuting inside the city ( about 10 kilometers daily)

City : Pune

Mileage : above 50/ 55 kmpl is ok ( but preferably above it)

Time of Purchase : In next 1/2 months (may change)

Age : 23 years

The bike's looks are also important . Should not look too mature

Below I am giving the current choices i have in mind. Feel free to suggest any other if you think it fits my need

I have placed the bikes according to my current preference

1. Yamaha Saluto
Positive: This is my current 1st choice . It is new i.e. just launched , I like the look of the bike (in red). Mileage is also good,Yamaha claims 78 .Tubeless tires. Pilot lamp looks good, novelty factor (not many salutos on road)
Negative: no proper owner reviews and I have not seen it on roads yet , battery is not Maintenance Free.( henceforth will be called MF battery)

2. TVS Star City Plus
Positive: mileage is good. Bike looks nice to me in blue (subjective), light weight, semi digital console, lower price
Negative: No tubeless tires , no MF battery , will prefer saluto over it

3. Honda CB twister
Positive : This was actually first choice ,Aggressive looks , honda product , tubeless tires , MF battery , ok mileage etc.
Downside: Discontinued

4. Bajaj Discover 150F
Positive : Sole 150cc bike considered in list , bang for buck(front disk , mono shock, digital console ) , looks are good
Negative : Paint scheme used is horrible, big turn off (again, my personal opinion owners please don't be offended), might have to put in 2/3 k extra ,
family biased against bajaj products

5. Honda Shine
Positive : Good reviews, dependable, good mileage, disk option ,tubeless tires,MF battery etc
Cons : Dated looks feels too mature (my view ), costlier than other similar bikes ,
didn't like treatment by showroom (they thought i was invisible, they simply don't pay attention)

6. Bajaj Discover 100/125 M
Positive: Okay looks, mileage is good , (not sure about type of tires and battery )
Negative : Maintenance , too common, bajaj products not popular in family

Wild Card : Heard about Honda's upcoming 110 cc (not sure) bike which will replace CB twister . Apparently it might be called Honda Livo . I am highly interested in this upcoming bike so please share any new information about it if you know (specially the release date)

List of bikes I have already cancelled (wont be giving reason)
Suzuki Slingshot ,Hayate
Hero glamour, passion series
Honda Dream series

Honda Livo launch date is this Friday - 10 July. Wait till then, you will get to know the OTR price. Honda products are impeccable, IMO, Nothing matches to it (in the commuter segment atleast). Since you are in Pune, spare parts and A.S.S shouldnt be a concerns at all.

If it doesnt fall under your price bracket of 65-69k, I would suggest you Yamaha SS125. Good commuter, not much of a looker, but comes with disc , Not sure on the tyres (whether they are tube or tubesless), my dad uses it and he is getting an average of 57kmpl inside city.

Have you considered Centuro ?
R15S - Current
Honda Dio - Current
TNT 600i - Sold
Classic 500 - Sold
Pulsar 220 dtsi - Sold
Yamaha YBX125 - Sold

The yamaha showroom people told me that ss125 might be soon discontinued, instead they showed me just launched saluto as alternative.

I am not interested in mahindra bikes

Saluto is a very good choice. But as Archer84 has already suggested, I'd suggest you SS125. And for your concern regarding the discontinuation of SS125, please have a look at the following e-mail by me to Yamaha dated 28-04-2015.

Respected sir,
I presently own a SS125(Nov 2012 model). The bike is doing very fine. I have one concern
though. A few days back, I went to the Yamaha Factory Outlet in Kolkata to get my bike
serviced. I enquired about the upcoming Saluto and was informed that Saluto will be reaching
the dealerships shortly. But, I also came to know that SS125 has been discontinued. Is that
true? Are by any chances, the present owners run the risk of non-supply of parts?
Reply will be welcome.

With regards,

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Sir,

Greetings for the day.

We thank you for your mail. This is to inform you that the SS125 Model is a running Model & there is no such update on the discontinuation of the same.

Yamaha has always given a stepmother like treatment to SS125. For that reason, the sales have never reached the full potential. But, ask any Gladiator/SS125 owner and you will know how good a bike this is both for city and highway.
