  • Looking for practical bike for Indian conditions : Benelli 600i vs 600gt vs Ninja 650

Guys I am looking for my first big bike . Currently I own Karizma and super happy with it. I enjoy the comfortable seating position and low end torque. I test rode Benelli 600i and was somewhat underwhelmed with the low end power. This was first time I rode 250cc plus bike so my judgement might be wrong. Sound is amazing though, as expected from I4. I have never ridden Ninja 650 so here are my some of doubts. This purchase will be second bike, only for weekend or small rides. Someone who has ridden both please answer

1)If I am riding under 5k,6k RPM, will Ninja deliver considerably more torque in real life as indicated by specs (around 60nm @6k rpm vs 50nm @10k) ? I am not a ripper and will rarely ride over 100,120 kmph. So under these condition will Ninja feel way more powerful ?

2)Is there huge difference in FE ? Whats the average range for FE for both bikes?

3)Benelli 600gt seems to deliver peak torque at slightly lower RPMs (8k) but looks yuk IMO also its 50k more espensive. Can anyone who has ridden this bike comment on its low end performance vs 600i ?

4)What about pillion comfort on Benelli 600i ? Again here Ninja 650 seems to have edge..

As you might have guessed I am leaning towards Ninja 650. Its just the sound of i4 has added to the dilemma

    Query Approved

Since you are a Karizma owner and not an R15 owner and very happy with that decision i would suggest you to choose the Ninja 650. If you are looking to ride slow and easy and want bottom end torque then surely the N650 is any day the right choice.

The I4 600s enjoy being revved up and the real fun begins post 6k rpm. If that is not the way you like to ride then don't even bother with them.

Pillion comfort and FE i don't know so will not comment upon.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

I have TD both N650 and the 600i. Believe me, The N650 pulls off easily without any hassle as you plonk it in first gear. On the other hand 600i requires tiny throttle input to get the wheels rolling. But both pulls phenomenally of the line. N650/ER-6n scores in city riding easily with the low-end torque which the 600i misses a bit. You wont feel it much. I see that an advantage infact, the uses less power on the tap thereby adding to your FE.

2)Is there huge difference in FE ? Whats the average range for FE for both bikes?

N650/ER-6n delivers close to 22-24 inside city and +4/5 on the Highways, 600i delivers 20-22 inside city and +6 on the Highways. These are realistic figures on the ER-6n, I have no idea about the 600i.

3)Benelli 600gt seems to deliver peak torque at slightly lower RPMs (8k) but looks yuk IMO also its 50k more espensive. Can anyone who has ridden this bike comment on its low end performance vs 600i ?

If city use is what you are looking at, GT is not the machine for you. Its bulky and difficult to handle due to extra weight from the massive 27L fuel tank. If touring is your style and your ZMA can do the city chores, go for GT.

4)What about pillion comfort on Benelli 600i ? Again here Ninja 650 seems to have edge..
Its a straight forward winner here, N650

As you might have guessed I am leaning towards Ninja 650. Its just the sound of i4 has added to the dilemma
      Hey Sam, my responses inline.

PS: You know what, I had ER-6n ticking off all the boxes for me, but I fell for I-4. I am ready to tackle anything

Thanks for your valuable inputs. If the difference in low end torque is only a bit in real life then I might consider Benelli 600i. I though difference might be very large as suggested by specs.

Regarding my usage : It would mostly be weekend ride to Lavasa/Lonavala or small leisure ride in city after traffic hours. I wont be touring much or use it as a daily commuter. I wont ride too slow, but I enjoy effortless ride. The reason I hated R15 was I had to keep it higher revs to get decent power. Hence my emphasis is on torque.

If the FE is within 20-25 range then its fine with me. I read someone claiming sub 10 within city for Benelli. If the difference is due to riding style then its good news for me as I get FE of 37 in city which is on higher spectrum for ZMA.

Is pillion seat totally un comfortable on Benelli ? Another point I would like to know is reg clutch hardness. I felt it too hard during my short TD. Will it get better over time ?

One question though, Did you take a TD of n650 as well (sorry, if you have already mentioned about that). FE of 10 on Benelli is a joke, if so, then there is something mechanically wrong.

Pillion comfort on Benelli is good only for short burst, over long-haul, It will take a toll on your arse. I am not sure on the heat factor seeping through the seat, but they say its OK for short rides. I havent heard too about any one taking a pillion on long runs.

Spares and A.S.S are a bit of concern with Benelli, it takes time, but eventually it will come. They are improving a lot now-a-days with the service. My opinion is it should only get better over time , since they have done 400+ deliveries in this short span.

People like me or be it anybody can give gyan all day long. But In the end, its comes to ones personal choice. I fell for I-4 , I always wanted one. But so many suggested me that for my city usage ER-6n is the best. Since I am going for a long-term run (atleast 7-8 yrs) before I change, I want to take this leap.

Edit: Yes, you have mentioned that you havent driven a 650, do take one inside city and see the difference, Rgearding the clutch tightness, the first batch of vehicles which were delivered to the showrooms are used as TD vehicles and some given to customers as well. when i took a TD, the clutch was little ok. I drive a CL5, its clutch is tight and not as light as P220. So, yes, the niggles and other issues are being addressed batch-after-batch.

I took TR of both 600i & GT and ridden little bit of N650 as well and I would like to comment on only one thing 'low end torque', everyone is mentioning that comparing N650 it is not that friendly with low end torque below 6K RPM, it is true. But ask your self that how much this matter for you to coming from ZMA, its definitely far far more than ZMA and if that is enough for you, you get your answer. I would say its very-very less noticeable. In some extent its kinda forgiving in city as its require little bit more throttle response.

Clutch is very hard but when I was on the bike I didn't feel it either may be due to that exoticism of Inline 4 and ixil

Best of luck for your ride

Thanks you friends for helpful inputs If the real life difference in torque is not much noticeable then I would go with Benelli The sound of I4 is so tempting ! But it also means I would need to wait a bit for further savings (was planning to buy used Ninja 650 around 4l range).

That's what love is all about, not ticking the right boxes, no rationale, no practicality, when it feels right, it's right. [emoji2] [emoji2]
