  • To buy an RE or not ?

    Hi folks,

I've committed several mistakes in my life, but the one that tops that list is selling my 1990 Std 350 for 10K (Circa 2009) to someone who I'm not very fond of.
I am currently commuting to work on a 2007 CBZ Xtreme. It is going good, I've had issues with pick up that got solved with a cleaning of the head and had a small issue with the CDI (that's what the mechanic said). I am looking for a change as I have been doing short trips of 300-400KM per day during weekends on the CBZ and would like to go back to the RE stable.

Now coming to the question, I've had absolutely no issues with my std 350, I used to get it serviced by Jaf in Chennai. There was just once when I had to replace the clutch cable. Of late I have seen a lot of people going for REs, and a lot of them have been complaining about their brand new rides.

I booked a Classic 350 Ash on 09 May 2015. (Wait time of 4 months)

How good are the latest REs, should I stay or should I go for a second hand RE

    I don't want a lemon.

I booked a CL5 on Dec 2013. and I had been using for 18 months now. First few months were a bliss , then the issues started to creep in. FI sensor malfunctioning with full tank of fuel on board, Clutch going kaput 2 times (I dont race the vehicle nor I drive insane, I maintain speeds less than 70 kmph), Headlight fuse 2 times, battery dies 3 times due to faulty wiring and charged leaks completely and left me stranded from home 15 kms away and I had to push 2 kms (imagine , I pushed 2 kms 200kg vehicle).

If someone asks me, I would say a big NO...If your mistake is selling ur RE, mine is buying it. I regret deeply selling my P220 (every single day)
        R15S - Current
        Honda Dio - Current
        TNT 600i - Sold
        Classic 500 - Sold
        Pulsar 220 dtsi - Sold
        Yamaha YBX125 - Sold

The Lemon part alone chucks RE out of equation. There is absolutely no guarantee that you won't get a sour one.

As for RE's, I'd differ. Have a carbed 350cc for me, and having driven for about 13k KMs, there is absolutely ZERO problems. Returns around 45kmpl+ when "gliding" (i.e., under 60KMPH ). and touches around 125/130 pretty easily. Since you had a 350cc, you'd know the 125+ is something good.....

point being, you can get lucky (or unlucky) with an RE. Not so much with other bikes....

          choice is yours....

          regards,
          Achyut.

Re: To buy an RE or not ?

I had no experience with RE or any motorbike for that matter, but I have booked a Desert Storm and am awaiting delivery. I went ahead only on the basis of Internet gyaan and blind faith . So fingers crossed on what I am going to get. That being said, what I can see from various forums is that there are so many changes made by RE over the years, especially for the Classic series, that they are almost like different machines compared to what they were in 2009. Also since the new plant came into being the build quality also has improved. So I would suggest if you are getting a new machine, get feed back from people who bought the machine at least a year back. Also I feel most of the time owners feel cheated not because of the product, but incompetence of the A.S.S. They would tell you to replace the fuel pump, in the blink of an eye, that costs 10 grand a pop, but it could be that it is the case of a loose contact. So I have downloaded both owner and service manuals to ensure that at least I can verify what the SA's are telling me.
PS: About me, I have not touched a motorcycle after having an accident on a Splendour, while learning to ride in college 10 years back. Now I'm getting a Desert storm, because I want one and I can have one, logic and common sense be damned.

Logic won't work in love, my friend....I didn't even knew how to ride when I got mine. The learning on a heavy bike has a joy of it's own....get yours, you'll understand what I am saying. BTW, am getting a 500cc RE too. Might be a C5 or the GT535. Can't get enough of these machines!

Good luck with the Desert Storm, REs have one of the best centers of gravity among motorcycles sold in India. Very sturdy as well. The old CI engines were a dream to ride. Cruising between 45-50 was heaven. My first motorcycle was the RE std 350 with a fury handle bar, got the handlebar replaced with the one from a Machismo for safety reasons.

Where did you get the Service manual, is it available on the RE website.

                  In two words... HELL NO.

Why would you buy a rust bucket with parts falling off it , when you can get a modern, reliable and butter smooth machine with the same amount of money.

Read the ownership experience of the owners and you'll know the kind of troubles E owners go through.

I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

If at all if u wana buy RE, buy CGT, best built RE to date. You get less run second hand CGT for same price of new CL350. Make sure you get it checked by a competent mech before buying.

I completely agree with Achyut. Having owned a TBTS 2009 Model , clocked close to 38k kms. I can say it purely depends on your luck, the only issues i had with this bike was Spark plug gone kaput ( 2 days after getting serviced ) , fuse blown & 2 punchers. But the Quality has improved a lot but as i said it depends on your luck.

I couldn't have put it across in a better way!
Having seen all the REs owned by my many friends, I would say go for a reliable and smooth machine for that same budget! And I personally don't believe in luck and stuff. Cause out of 10-12 REs that are around me, EVERY single piece has its own issues.
You can go for a technologically advanced, reliable, efficient and a better lookin bike in that same budget.

Never ever rode a bike prior to May 2015, booked the RE DS on May 8, got it delivered on June 9, learnt riding on it, still learning. RE. Looks great. Feels great. As this guy said. Logic and common sense be damned.
