  • Duke 200/390

I wanted to talk a little about the Duke 200/390 as I am planning to purchase one relatively soon. Most probably will wait till the new versions of them hit the market (the one where they did some minor changes with redirecting the hot air away from the legs and such)

So I have done extensive research on the model and I wanted to get first hand advice. My current bike is .... wait for it ... Honda .... Activa! Yes thats right. Although I have been practicing and honing my skills on Hero Xtreme (belongs to my cousin)

Now I dont do much of highway or outskirt rides or any long drives (since I dont have a girlfriend xD) My usual routine is 'To the college and back home' which totals to about 34KM.

The route I would say is 3/4th City ride, sometimes bumper to bumper in the evening but the rest is quite open and can go upto 80 or 90km/h. Also lot of SpeedBreakers in the way. However there is alternate route thats a bit longer (totals to about 40km) but the road is clean since its the Outer Ring road.

From what I have read the 200 is purely for City rides and it seems you can start of in 2nd gear from Dead start. The 390 is supposed to be more for open roads where it can breath properly

Would like to get some advice on this matter, Thank you
(If you need more info, let me know, will be more than happy to provide. Resident of Hyderabad!)

In a hurry, so won't comment, will come back in a bit and voice my opinion!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

        Hi

I would suggest you to take D200 because you will be mainly riding in the city. You will not be able fully utilise the power of D390 and also low end torque will lead to more often gear shifting. Take test rides of both bikes and then decide that will clear your every doubt.

        Ride safe 😊

Go for Duke 390, just my opinion, good all rounder! You may not hit the highway now, but time changes. BTW, not every GF's likes to go long rides on two wheels. Take a couple of long test rides on both the machines, you will definitely find what you need. During test rides prefer tight traffic places and few lonely stretches like your regular commute route. Never ride like you stole it on the TR bikes, just understand how the bike behaves for your inputs and finalize the one which gives you that comfortable spot! All the best.

Thank you for the suggestion, after going through more videos, I have established that I should go with a 200.

Thanks for the suggestion, however I have decided to go with the 200. Going with a 390 straight up from a Honda activa seems kinda cocky. It might be a little too much power for a beginners bike. 200 seems to be a good spot for me

Also the KTM showrooms here dont provide test rides, thats a problem, atleast thats what i have heard from some people.

Never go with other's saying. Try it yourself, I think you live in Hyderabad KTM should be giving priority at least to popular cities. Tell them you are going to book the bike straight away only if they could provide Test Rides. If not, you could still lodge a complaint about the Dealer to KTM. I heard in one KTM 200 / 390 thread that one guy from Goa has lodged a complaint about test ride, in the same week test ride bike was brought to his residence. Unless you ride the bikes back to back you cannot figure out the difference. Power is all about how you use it. 200 is prone to its aggressive power delivery, trust me I have a RC 200. BTW choice is yours, this is just my words.

                Re: Duke 200/390

I was in the same dilemma a few days ago, upgrading from my pulsar 180. As duke200 is a bit short geared, its great for city but not so good for highways. And its opposite for 390. I chose the latter. Though the power is too much, upgrading from smaller bikes, but you get to control it during the run-in period. And the newer model is out, you don't have to wait.

Take a test ride of any of them, as the chassis is same, and the small test rides won't give you any idea of the power. So, think about your future usage too, as it's a big investment.

(Yes I am from Hyderabad) You have once again forced me to rethink my situation. Never knew we could lodge complaints regarding that matter. Will definitely ask for test rides. Also I woulda gone with RC since it has a bit more appeal than the Duke but from a long term perspective I can see my back getting destroyed on it.

Thanks for providing the insight! So the new Duke 390 is out? Interesting, definitely gonna test ride it.

I am currently waiting for my GoPro to arrive, once it does, gonna go straight to KTM Showroom!

Hey...Good decision you have made to upgrade. I dont fancy a college going guy on a Active (No offense, just kidding)

Before I throw down my options, Just wanted to ask you, what will be your budget limited to (you havent qouted anything about that). And do you wish to consider other street fighters too.

IMO, D390 is a complete package and yes you heard it right, the new D390 with the slipper assisted clutch is out and on the prowl. If your budget is not limited, then go for D390. Good tourer as well. I presume you wont make an upgrade atleast for the next 5-6 years, so buying a D390 is a good option. You wont get bored of its power and exitement. All it needs a little revving to keep it happy.

Beware of the throttle, dont wring it to much to put a permanent smile on your face. It tends to do that.

Good luck. Take a TD of both and you will feel the difference and make a wise choice.

Haha, TBH with you, I am prolly the only authentic and legit bike rider in my college with a Proper LS2 helmet and Scoyco gloves, other than that I am partially squidding (if you know what squidding means) without elbow guards, knee guards or a jacket. Will get all those in due course of time. SO yea, wearing proper gear and riding an Activa is kinda funny.

But yea as for the budget its pretty much restricted to whatever a D390 would cost on-road which according to some site is ~2.2Lakhs

I wanted to ask a couple of other things, so instead of creating a new thread, I will just ask them here...

Any idea when the Honda MSX 125 will come here?

I am planning on getting a bike for my little brother as well but a lesser power and cheaper one. By less power I mean 150cc and below and by cheap I mean less than 1 lakh. So I would like to get some suggestions on that as well. (Ofc I can read about the topic elsewhere but I like to engage with the community and get first hand advice)

I did some more research and came to an agreement that Duke will be a little too much. So booked a Dual tone Black/Red Gixxer
