  • Help in buying a Gearless Scooter!

    Hi,

I'm a total newbie when it comes to bikes, so would like some help in choosing a scooter for myself. I dont know how to ride and this will be my first scooter/bike. I wanna start of with a scooter to get familiar with the controls and stuff and maybe next year ill get a bike. Below are my requirements:
    1. Im 22 and from Kolkata.
    2. I need the scooter for city usage {work, home, college}.
    3. Budget is 70k.
    4. Should be stable and durable.

For the past week i've been reading reviews and looking at the available options. It has made me more confused. Below are my shortlisted scooters:
    • Yamaha Fascino: The scooter i wanna get. Looks stylish, good mileage according to reviews. But there will be a waiting time. And the Y-salesman{adamant on selling the RayZ} said that they are not sure about availability the spare parts. So im in a dilemma. Will low availability of spares be a huge problem? New scooter, not sure if Yamaha will support it in the long run?
    • Yamaha RayZ: The scooter that the salesman wants me to get. But it looks like its meant for the fairer sex, except the new stickers.
    • Hero Maestro: My cousin recommended it and its feature packed. Haven't checked it out, hardly any reviews, not sure about Hero's ASS.
    • TVS Jupiter: My second choice. Positive reviews all around. Couldnt find any negatives except low brand recognition.
    • Honda Activa: I dont think i can go wrong with an activa. But my cousin said to skip activa, since the engine isnt durable/"shaky". And my Honda showroom visit wasnt exactly positive. But the service center is close to my house. And activas, activas everywhere. Wont have spare problems, i hope.

So with so many choices i'm totally confused. Hope all the experts will help me choose the proper one.
Also i dont have a 2 wheeler license, should i apply for a licence first and then buy the scooter or buy the scooter first, then train on it and then apply for a licence.

    Thanks.

First of all, write to Yamaha, that the showroom is discouraging you to get the Fascino. A dealer saying against the availability of spare part for a newly launched product, is an absolute sin. In my experience, one doesnt normally goes wrong with a yamaha. Their ASS is still the best. Had I been in the market for a new scoot, I would have seriously considered this scoot.
Honda activa, only if you are too much concerned about the resale. The engine is smoothest of lot. But nothing more to this product in today's time. IT IS OUTDATED IMO.
Jupiter- This one I own. >8000 kms done. Used by three members in our family- Me, dad and my younger Bro. No complains, though the milage is around 50kmpl(I am hearing reviews of Faacino delivering 60kmpl).
I would recomend you to choose between Facsino and Jupiter, depending on the Quality of ASS in your area.

        Thanks.

go for fascino! i have ridden that bike ( friends) and its beauty! nice but lacks features for the price when compared to competition, but its definetely a head turner and is different from the rest of the scooters, looks like a cross between honda active i & Vespa.

Suzuki stable also have some good scooters, powerful. but ASS is so pathetic atleast in hyderabad and spares are very expensive.( i am suzuki access owner by the way!)

so choose right and ride safe!

        cheers

Live like you mean it, then get a bike!

Re: Help in buying a Gearless Scooter!

If you ask me, I have had my Activa for the past 4 years. I got into a lot of accidents which were due to the other person each time. Always got it repaired under insurance. I always did a thorough inspection after the repairs were done, also I get it serviced regularly and I do the same thorough inspection after each service. Honda is also providing an Annual Scheme for servicing such as % reduction in labor charges and such for the year which is great.

The reason why you see a lot of Activas on the road is simply because of its reliability. Its got a massive reputation behind it. If you do want to stand apart in teh crowd, you can order a special color that is not common on the road, like Golden or Teal or someother, dont remember what other options there are.

As for durability, its the most durable of the lot, if you maintain it properly. My first paragraph proves it, even after accidents it works just as new.

So yea, in short, you definitely cannot go wrong with the Activa. Since it is going to be your starter bike (doesnt matter if its a scooter, I still refer to them as bikes) I would highly recommend having an Activa which has more of a Practical Purpose than Aesthetics. Besides its Honda, comeon! You cant go wrong with them either.

Also like you said, lot of honda service centres nearby so its never an issue incase you fall in trouble.

I'd recommend the Yamaha Fascino and the Suzuki Lets. Test ride both and decide.

I knew he was pushing the RayZ but thinking logically is he right about the spares of Fascino? What exactly is he referring to by spares? Are they ought to be changed regularly or i can take the risk?
I dont care about the resale value since ill be keeping it long term.

Now i'm confused between Activa 125 and Fascino. Both are almost similarly priced onroad. Should i play safe and get the Activa 125 or take a risk and get the Fascino?

The underpinnings, engine components, wheels, shox.. Basically everything apart from the painted body parts and lights is same for all yamaha 115cc scoots. So parts wont be a problem. Activa 125 is a good bet too if u can deal with honda.

Generally when a showroom doesnt have stock they do such things, the first showroom i booked the fascino at kept telling me to buy the alpha stating the same rant. So i just bought the scoot directly from the distributer.

I'd suggest you the Fascino for its refreshing looks, comfortable seats, smooth engine and superb build quality.
BTW, did you go to the factory outlet at Kestopore?
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

But i dont want a red scooter.

Give a call to the Factory Outlet. Number 033 4062 2086/87. I think, you'll get the colour you want.
