  • Is Yamaha FZ good for cruising?

I currently own a Discover 125DTS-i. It is 8 years old and still running strong. I wouldn't want to change it but off late I'm having to travel a minimum 25kms up and down everyday for work. Part highway, part city traffic. I'm not sure the bike can take it for long. I can feel the engine stressing out at 60kmph and the vibrations affect my hands long after I'm off the bike.

I don't have much knowledge on bikes. I'm not a fan of acceleration. I prefer top speed and cruising comfort.

I initially wanted to go for the RE 350 Classic but got dissuaded because of my lack of knowledge of bikes, the high maintenance it demands and the cost.

I am now interested in the Yamaha FZs. Especially the first FZ. I would like to know if it is good bike for my requirements. I'll be more than happy if I can get 50+kmpl mileage.

I also have the Bajaj Avenger in mind, if the Yamaha FZs are not an option.

I tried the Gixxer, it was comfortable to ride but I don't like the design.

I also looked at the Splendor Classic Pro but the lack of a pillion seat isn't helping.

    Budget - 1L (on-road)
    Age - 33
    Height - 5'10"
    Weight - 90kgs

    Query Approved

Check Honda Unicorn 160, Yamaha SZ, Discover 150 if you are looking for a no frills bike, which gets the job done.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

I am not sure if FZ will give you 50+ mileage. Your other alternatives could be Honda Unicorn 160 and Suzuki GSX 150r. Both the bikes gives excellent mileage and very comfortable. GSX comes with 6 gears which is perfect for cruising. Alternatively try out the old Hero Honda Karizma R. I have one and it is one of the best bikes on the road.

Comfort wise FZ would provide you with decent comfort. But don't expect mileage of 50kmpl, max u might get would be around 40-45kmpl or jus plain 35kmpl. Since you mentioned top speed, it really depends on the cruise speed u prefer, anything above 80kmph, FZ would not handle it very well for everyday usage.

Avenger will give you a mileage of 35kmpl only.

        Splendor classic is a joke.

Suzuki GS150, Unicorn 160 perfectly fulfills your requirements.

I also feel the Pulsar AS150 would fit your bill, the so called mini tourer. It does provide decent comfort and Bajaj bikes are always known for mileage. But its new in the market, so not many reviews about its performance.

Did not recommend the As 200 because it would not satisfy your mileage requirements.
It's a lot like nuts and bolts - if the rider's nuts, the ride - bolts!

For cruising (i.e. 80-85kmph), fz is extremely good. But above that, you won't like the stressed feel of the engine. Mileage of new fz v2 is said to be good, check ownership thread for more. And comfort wish its okay okay.

          Ride safe and have fun.

I was almost in the same situation few months back. I had an 8 year old discover but my daily commute is much lesser about 22 kms total everyday. I bought fz version 1 and am happy with it. I get about 42 kmpl mileage. Engine doesn't get stressed upto 80-85 kmph. It would be a good buy. If you are looking for alternatives unicorn 160 would be a good option as several others have suggested.

Re: Is Yamaha FZ good for cruising?

              Hi guys,

Thank you for all your suggestions.

I checked the GS150R but the dealer said it was not worth purchasing due to low sales and lack of spare parts for servicing.

I will take a look at the Unicorn 160.

But, if I am willing to give up on the mileage aspect, is the Avenger a good buy? I just learnt that it's getting updated with the Pulsar 200 NS engine for a late 2015 launch. Will it be worth the wait?

Maybe... this will be an opportunity for me to learn about bikes and biking. Who knows?

                Which showroom/Dealer is this?
Yes, very low sales. Less than 50 a month these days. Gixxer155 stole all the limelight on the Suzuki's stable.

Should suit you fine, it sells over 16,000 a month.

I own the gixxer 155 , did go on a small tour of 720 kms in 2 days. Well I was in heaven during corners, the bike feels nimble, the tyres know their job, lean as much as possible and u can easily flick it. Fuel efficiency wise I rode on bad as well as good road and I got 47 kmpl. No doubt is more than I expected! Well I have ridden the fzs 2.0 like it's refinement . Haven't toured on it though!!!!
