  • Need some suggestions for a new bike please!

    Hey guys!
I need some help in choosing a new bike to purchase for myself, and have decided on the following:
    1. KTM Duke 390 - Rs. 2,27,000 (390cc)
    2. KTM RC 390 - Rs. ?? (390cc) Not sure about price of this one, i am unable to find for 2015 model.
    3. CBR 250 - Rs, 2,27,000
I am looking at 2015 models for all the above.

Price budget would be 2,40,000 max, so would there be any other bike that i could consider in this price range? Not looking for cruisers like Enfield, or pure commuter bikes like passion and so on. Id prefer good looking sports bikes.

The bike if for daily riding to and from college, very very rarely for highway riding. (Mileage for all the bikes is around 20-25, which is okay).
However, I wish to know which of these would be best suited for me?
Its around 8KM one way, twice a day.
I have heard RC position is uncomfortable, any suggestions on that? Also, for traffic riding which one of these is suggested? Another factor is 200cc, would 390cc be excess?

Regarding technical specifications, this being my first bike, I would require some help. What standout features would be there in each of these bikes? (example KTM has added slipper clutch in the new models...and so on). Really bad with understanding all this, would really like some help please.

Regarding heaviness of the bikes, i am currently learning/practicing on an Apache 180, which i can handle pretty easily, so would i have any problems?
PS Im 5'6" tall, but manage to flatfoot the apache.

If i have missed out any feature, do let me know and I shall update it.

Thanks a lot in advance guys, this would really help me a lot!

After reading all the things you wrote i can say that CBR250r with ABS is good for you.
At the end of the day you will buy what you want to though. you can consider D390 also. but too much for a beginner if you dont know throttle control. only few beginners can handle that bike well.
RC will be too much for you. and again there are very few who ride it first time and get acquainted with riding posture. mind you its way more sportier than r15. you bend more, harder seat and wider handles.

the D390 has good console (not design wise) with loads of info. inverted forks (which is good technically but you feel difference that much) and ABS.
cbr250 has abs and good mileage.
both are having good riding position.
so you choose now. cbr or duke

Don't get me wrong but a 390cc would be an overkill for your requirements. For you, a CBR250(ABS) would be a good choice. Has ample power, looks, quality and above all safety measures for a rider. And Hondas are known for smooth engines. CBR250 will definitely pave the way for future upgrades.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, even I'd agree. In the last few days i have learnt and practiced on an apache 180, which has pretty good power, so yeah, i can't even imagine what a monster 390 would be!
So probably I'd go for CBR ABS version 250cc. However i will be buying a bike in a month, in October, when i turn 18, so any new bikes upcoming? I've heard CBR 250 2015 model will be coming, any clues on that(especially price)? I saw the R3, however at 3 lakh+ its out of my budget.

And also another point not very relevant to the matter, but which I'm confused about is that of turning the bike(BTW I'm learning and figuring it out on my own). I am hesitant to turn the bike, and it feels very heavy to me, although once in a while i take sharp turns well(fluke). Any website/videos where i can learn and know about this? i have heard of counter steering, but wasn't able to really figure it out, so need some help on this too please!

          Thanks a lot!

HX250 could be brought on by Hero. But not sure when. It was supposed to get launched before the festive season BTW.

Kawasaki 250cc single cylinder is scheduled to launch late this year... Not 100% sure, but check that as well as its 2 lakh range bike and Kawa brand..😊

                Turning 18?

                Okay my 2 cents.
You are still learning my friend.
1.Learning in these bikes will have their own share of things because when you learn you make mistakes and mistakes on these bikes means hole in pocket or something more worse.

                2. first buy good set of riding gears. A full face helmet is must and a riding jacket. you are investing so much on the bike and these will cost just probably 5% of what you pay for the bike.

                3. I strongly suggest you get a good 150 cc. there are plenty of options. learn riding in these and graduate to 250+. we have had our share of flukeness but when its a bad day even missed fluke at 15kmph will be hurtful.

                4. Skills. keep this word in mind. No amount of video will help you out if you dont develop the skill and skill develops when you ride, fall and learn. pretty hefty price to pay but you can learn without the fall if ridden safe as far as videos are concerned, watch keith code video. they will tel you how to control a bike. Also taking a U turn or a turn has lot to with throttle(speed), clutch (being on right gear) and body position. control the first 2 in the beginning. oh and yes, learn braking properly before that turn.

                5. ABS will make you over dependent on it when braking. it will be a little strange to ride a non abs in tight situations later, hence develop good skills at braking, but sadly abs will not help you develop it.

not trying to change your mind here, but saying that whatever you buy treat it well and it will treat you back good. take your time to learn little by little.

Re: Need some suggestions for a new bike please!

First of all buy good riding gears just like what Ron said and if you have a budget of 2.40 i suggest u buying a Ktm Duke 200 and buy some good gears as D200 does fit in your requirements, its a fun and easy bike to ride around the city , it is lighter than most of the bikes around its price and displacement and has a good street cred too. I wouldnt suggest you buying the Honda CBR250R as its a Little heavy bike for city riding and in bumper to bumper traffic its quite annoying as one will have to shift gears like every 5 secs.
Cbr250r has also gone old (Dont get me wrong i own a cbr250r [emoji14] ) but if Honda would've launched a new cbr250r with twin headlamps, i wouldve told you to wait and buy that , but all they did was a new paint scheme.

Btw for how long are you planning to keep the bike with you ?

Since you are looking for a sports bike I would go with the above said suggestions, do go for a test drive and try out all the mentioned bikes. A 250cc bike would best suite your beginner profile. The most important thing get proper riding gear. Cheers mate

Thanks for the video, it'll definitely help
Regarding starting with a 150cc, my scenario is that after my undergrad, ill be going abroad for postgrad, so Ill have 4 -5 years with the bike i choose now. It would be too expensive and impractical for me to ask my dad for another bike after a year, so what i buy now is what I'm going to have for the next few years, which is why i wanted at least 200-250.
Thanks a lot for the other stuff . My only query is why a riding jacket?

In case of a fall, there are certain areas which tend to get hurt more as compared to other parts of the body. A riding jacket has armors and has been designed to protect those areas apart from covering you in a safety cushion. True, a riding jacket won't help your bones from cracking but it'd protect you from getting hurt. A Rs. 7000/- jacket could save you from Rs. 70000/- in hospital bills!
Also, it helps to protect yourself from inclement weather.

I would suggest go for pulsar 200/220. You are way too inexperienced for a big bike. Your daily requirement is 16kms up and down in city. CBR and Duke 390 are meant for the highways, RC390 for track. At max, consider D200. These bikes would give you the big-bike-feel, and will be easy on your (parents) pocket. I am a D390 owner, and trust me on this, CBR and 390 sisters are not forgiving. You need a lot of experience and patience for them, else they could be fatal for you.

Owning a big bike feels good, but not at your life's stake. Better save the money and buy a decent helmet and other gears.

                          Rest is upto you.

First of all, 390 is definitely an overkill. I would say even cbr 250r is an overkill.
My suggestion will be to go for r15 or an rc200. ABS is really good but you need to learn without it, too much reliability on it is not good.

i think the power and torque of ktm rc 390 is too much hard to control for a new biker i would suggest go for some decent power bikes under 250cc and then upgrade to 390 maybe after 1 year or so by this way u would be at a perfect position to handle the demon rc [emoji4] just my suggestion and at last it is left to u to decide whether to buy or not btw good luck on that
