  • Help me find a worthy successor to my RX 135

    Hi all,

First post here though I've been visiting the forums anonymously for ages. I've owned an RX 135 since 1999 and the time has finally come to find a worthy successor. (I'm not selling my RX though).

    Budget: < 1 Lakh
    Age: 35
    Height: 5'11"
    Weight: 72
Intended Usage: Daily commute (~25km a day) 3-4 days a week (want to use the RX at least one day a week). Occasional weekend/holiday rides with the wife (Max 200km. I have a car for longer trips, though a good bike might tempt me into taking the bike for longer trips).
Fuel efficiency: Not very fussy about this. My RX gives me 30-35 and I've been happy with that.
Riding style: Relaxed, steady and watchful.
City and highway usage: 75% / 25% (But city isn't heavy traffic like in the metros)
    Preferred Brand(s): Any
Pillion seat: Pillion comfort is important because we'll be two of us most of the time. Wifey rides the RX occasionally, so something she can ride is an added advantage but not a must.

Most importantly, like the thread title says, it has to be a worthy successor to the RX. It is not just about the power and pickup though. Anybody who has loved an RX will know what I mean. If they were still being manufactured, I would have picked another one up without hesitation. I'm only considering a new bike because my RX is showing signs of aging. I want to use it occasionally and let another bike do the heavy lifting.

    My research so far:

    1. Yamaha FZ FI: Looks good and being a Yam, it will be nice to stay in the family as my RX. Have ridden the old FZ and loved the smooth ride. Not sure about pillion comfort though.
    2. Bajaj Avenger: Was eagerly waiting for the new version, but was disappointed to see no rear disc brakes. Have heard about braking nightmares. Maybe I'm being paranoid here. My riding style may not require panic breaking and I have managed with the RX's brakes all these years, but when I'm getting a new bike it might as well be a good one. Love the way the bike looks. My favourite of the lot as far as looks are concerned. Not sure about pillion comfort.
    3. Honda unicorn 160: Nice bike and everything seems to be good, but somehow it didn't click. Can't figure out why. Maybe it's the way the bike looks. Maybe the fact that there are so many Unicorns on the road (the reason why I didn't consider a Pulsar).
    4. Honda Hornet 160: Sounds like a good bike, but no idea when it is coming out and if it will live up to the hype.
    5. Suzuki Gixxer: Maybe a touch too sporty for me and more importantly, the pillion seems to sit on the next floor (still better than some of the premium bikes though). Nice bike otherwise.

Please feel free to recommend any bikes I may have missed and correct me if I'm wrong in my assumptions about any of the above bikes. Thanks in advance

From the bikes you have listed, the Unicorn 160 has the most comfortable pillion seat, though it does nothing to excite the rider with its looks! The others have sporty and contemporary designs, but are a pain for the pillion!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Even I have been looking for a bike with similar requirements.
Based on my research you can consider the following bikes:
      1. Gixxer : Excellent bike except for pillion comfort.
      2. FZS FI : The bike is great, FI engine makes it even better. Pillion comfort is good enough. Take a test drive and if your wife finds the seating good, this should be your first choice.
      3. Unicorn 160R: Excellent bike with CBS and usual Honda refined engine. Ride quality is butter smooth. I took a test drive with my wife and loved it. The pillion comfort is also quite nice, though I am not very sure about long rides. I also prefer the heel-and-toe gear shifter present on it for comfortable city commutes. Only con I believe is the not-so-sporty looks. This is my personal preference and I will be buying one after the Diwali week.
      4. Hornet 160 : Showroom guys told me that it will be launched by the year end. To me this looks to be the sportier version of Unicorn 160. Tail light is fantastic !! If you can wait, I would suggest you to keep an eye on this.

Thanks varuog. I had been following your thread before I posted my query. I waited for months for the new Avenger and it was a bit of a let down. I don't know if I should wait another couple of months for the Hornet. Leaning towards the FZ FI now.

Thanks Monk. That is the problem of the day. Why can't good bikes be good to the pillion as well?

My money would be on R15-S. Has all the characters of a typical Yamaha and has a surprisingly good pillion seat. You have to stretch your budget though. May have most of the answers to your search.

R15-S provides a relaxed posture? Am I missing something on this model?

Not relaxed as a commuter. But still very good when you take into account the level of performance and sportiness it gives. There are more powerful bikes than R15-S, but he has used a Yamaha before, this would suit him best imo. In fact the seating is probably the best change over R-15 v2.0.

Re: Help me find a worthy successor to my RX 135

The bikes that you have listed are not at all close to being a successor for RX. According to me, Dukes are the successors for the RX and RD.

However, if pillion comfort is required along with power within 1 lakh - Pulsar 220 does fit the bill.
Other bikes have already been mentioned in the above posts, FZ - if you are strict about 1 lakh - has pretty good pillion comfort.

Unicorn is good too, but its just too commuterish and lacks style.

Gixxer - yes, nothing much to say its a complete package but FZ serves better in pillion comfort.

Avenger - Not recommended if you need pillion comfort. Pillion comfort in the previous versions of Avenger was so bad, it was literally pain in the butt. It would be better to wait for this, and check reviews if Bajaj has improved the pillion comfort.

It's a lot like nuts and bolts - if the rider's nuts, the ride - bolts!

The only worthy successor for Rx I can find only RD 350. At least that's the first thought that came to my mind.
