  • Help me choose a bike in 1L budget

    Hello guys,

I'm in the market for a new Bike. I have shifted from Delhi to Chennai and i need a new bike for daily errands & possibly for commuting to office in the near future.

    1. Budget
    1 Lakh
    2. Age
    29
    3. Height
    5 feet 11
    4. Weight
    90 Kgs
    5. Intended usage (eg. Office/College commute, Highway runs, Racetrack usage, Weekend recreation riding etc.)
Daily errands, Maybe occasional highway. Monthly running will be less than 300 Kms.
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any)
Since montly running is very low, Fuel efficiency doesn't matter now. Upwards of 35 Km/L would be good.
    7. City & Highway percentage usage
    100% city
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running
    Monthly 300 Kms
    9. City / Town /Village of residence (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing)
Chennai. Roads seems to be worse than village roads though. Miss the super smooth Delhi tarmac.
    10. Brand / Bike type preference (if any) Any

I have been riding a Honda Unicorn & Bajaj Avenger in Delhi. Both the bike have served my well. Unfortunately, Transporting my ride to Chennai is not possible. I have been in Chennai from last 2 weeks and it is very difficult to manage without a bike here. Autos seems to be too expensive and infrequent. Also adding to the problem is language barrier.

My choices are between Suzuki Gixxer SF, Bajaj Pulsar AS200 & Newly launched Honda Hornet 160.

    1) Suzuki Gixxer SF: I'm blown away by the looks & road presence of this bike. Moreover, everyone on the internet and Xbhp seems to be very happy with this bike. The only area of concern is poor pillion comfort. I would love to take my wife for occasional rides. I'm not sure how bad the Pillion seat is? Would appreciate if some Suzuki Gixxer owner and throw some light on pillion comfort.

    2) Bajaj Pulsar AS200 : Last year i got a chance to ride Pulsar NS200 on Kerala roads for a week. I was very impressed with overall handling, Braking, engine smoothness of the new gen pulsar. I have to say that Pulsar has come a long way. My relationship with Bajaj dates long back since they launched Bajaj Discover 125 with jackie chan Ad. I was completely decided on AS200 till i read Xbhp ownership thread. It seems members are having a hard time with bike with some serious defects. I hate service center visits and i would prefer to avoid a non reliable bike.

    3) Hornet 160: I have owned a Honda Unicorn for 6 years and never faced any major issues. Unicorn was a gem of a motorcycle. Only aspect that goes in favor of Hornet or Gixxer SF is pillion comfort. I prefer Gixxer SF's looks to Hornets.

I would really appreciate if you guys can give your suggestions. If you want to add another bike into the mix, feel free to do so.

    Query Approved

If pillion comfort scores over looks (looks are subjective, comfort isn't as much), then the Hornet it is. Since you have had a good experience with the Unicorn, then it makes even more sense. If you are looking at the Suzuki, then the naked makes more sense for city commuting.

Also, good to know that you have been studying the ownership threads of the motorcycles you are interested in, good to do some homework
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

        Thanks for approving, Bro.

Yes, I did my fair share of research before starting this thread. Thanks for the Hornet recommendation. Did check out some reviews & it seems like Hornet is Unicorn on drugs .

Agreed that Naked Gixxer is more practical on day to day basis but having said that, SF looks different from the crowd. I don't mind getting a good looking bike. 6 years back, in similar situation, i ended up buying Honda unicorn over Pulsar 220F for practicality. Although Unicorn was a great bike but it could never win an award on looks front.

How is Pillion comfort on As200?

I have not ridden a Apache yet. From what i heard from friends, it's one vibrating machine. I will definitely make it a point to test ride Apache before finalizing the bike.

If you are ready to compromise on Pillion comfort a bit, then Gixxer it is. IMO, Hornet looks equally good compared to Gixxer and also scores on the pillion comfort. Since you have had prior experience with Honda (Unicorn in that case), you very well know how good they in terms of reliability and maintenance and longevity.

So, it should be an easier choice. I personally would stay away from RTR for now since the new model is on the cards soon. Only adv i see is the availability of TVS spares and cheapest dual channel ABS bike in the country (if I am not wrong).

Honda hornet would be great, looks good and will ride smooth too as it has the same engine as the Unicorn 160.

Re: Help me choose a bike in 1L budget

Tested Suzui Gixxer today. Showroom was unwilling to offer SF for test rides, got naked Gixxer instead. First impression was, Gixxer pulls like a freight train even on lower gears. Bought a smile on my face. I have been riding a Unicorn from last 6 years & Gixxer seems to be much smoother and feels more powerful that Uni. Only thing i hated during the short test ride was the gear shift. Gear shift feels hard. There is no wait time for Moto GP edition Gixxer SF. On road price in Chennai is 1.02 L now which includes extended warranty, Zero depreciation insurance. Suzuki has collaborated with Snapdeal & offering Gixxer online. If i order online, Insurance is complimentary. Ordering from Snapdeal will cost me almost 2.5k less. 99.5 sounds better than 1L mental barrier.

Went to Bajaj showroom to test ride AS200. They didn't even have AS on display. Price quoted by the Showroom is 1.09L. Seems like prices of BAJAJ bikes have gone up.

Re: Help me choose a bike in 1L budget

AS200 is more of a highway machine, power comes in higher revs. But it doesnt have any serious problems at all. But If you ride 10% in city, then no use of buying AS/NS/RS.

So you need to consider torque-y machines. Pulsar 220F (little bulky, but loads of torque + best value for money) This I feel will be a lot suitable for your build (5.11 with 90KG)

Best wait one more month for Auto Expo!

Would recommend AS200 among your choices but wait for TVS to showcase the new Apache 200 before buying. Or if u can wait for the Auto show many new models will be shown.
Ns200 Fi is coming as well. That would be a better choice over the AS200

Wait for the Appache 200, TVS appache series is good. also check the seating handle position of the new gen bikes whether suits your rides
